POSITION DESCRIPTION Department: Classification Title: Working Title: FLSA Status: Academic Programs and Planning Administrator II Director of Academic Assessment ☐ Non-Exempt ☒ Exempt Incumbent: Position Summary The office of Academic Programs & Planning (APP) is a key component of the division of Academic Affairs Its mission is to promote student success through partnering with faculty and staff to develop, deliver, and continuously improve academic programs; collaborate with the Academic Senate to develop, implement, and review academic policies; and engage campus leaders in strategic and enrollment planning APP’s responsibilities include facilitating academic planning for new and existing degree programs, managing the accreditation and program-review process for all of Cal Poly’s academic programs, managing the assessment of student learning, providing administrative oversight for the University’s General Education and Instructionally Related Activities programs, implementing system-wide, California State University initiatives, and making reports to meet all accountability requirements Working independently under the general direction of the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs and Planning, the Director of Academic Assessment provides leadership and direction for University and General Education assessment efforts focusing on the five WASC Core Competencies of writing, critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, oral communications, and lifelong learning In addition, the Director will provide guidance and support to academic departments for the assessment of program learning outcomes/objectives, will work with the Center for Teaching, Learning & Technology (CTLT) to provide assessment workshops for faculty; will supervise the administration of the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA); and will work with Institutional Research to administer the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) Duties and Responsibilities The following examples illustrate typical work activities and are not meant to be all inclusive or restrictive: Essential Job Functions • • • • • Daily 90% Exercise leadership while working collaboratively in the assessment of student learning at the university and program levels Plan, organize, and facilitate campus-wide assessment projects in support of the University/GE assessment plan Provide guidance and support to the departments in the development and implementation of program-level assessment plans Provide leadership for PhD-bearing faculty and administrative members of 10/16 regarding the assessment of student learning by providing individual and group training, attending college and department faculty meetings, etc • Collect, archive, and evaluate annual program assessment plans and reports • Conduct assessment training as part of faculty development programming in partnership with CTLT • Supervise the administration of the CLA and work with Institutional Research to administer the NSSE and its related surveys • Analyze, disseminate, and triangulate CLA and NSSE results with the results of other assessments • Assure the currency of APP assessment web pages and of assessmentrelated content on WASC-mandated Student Achievement webpages, including content development • Collaborate in the development of workflow and e-portfolio solutions • Maintain professional currency by attending/presenting at academic workshops/conferences Related Job Functions • As Needed Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned Required Education, Experience, and Credentials Education and Experience:  Earned doctoral degree, significant teaching experience in higher education, and five or more years of experience with all aspects of student learning assessment in higher education Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities • • • • • • • • • Strong quantitative and qualitative skills and experience in research methods, including a knowledge of statistics as applied to the assessment of student learning Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills, including the ability to develop data-rich reports that are easily understood by various stakeholders Knowledge of formative and summative assessment principles and practices Extensive knowledge of contemporary pedagogy Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities and coordinate multiple projects with potentially conflicting demands Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, surveys, and various on-line systems Demonstrated ability to work successfully and collaboratively with a diverse faculty and staff Excellent ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems Proven ability to initiate, establish, and providing assessment services for a large public institution Completion of assessment training provided by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), including the Assessment Leadership Academy Familiarity with WASC expectations for the assessment of student learning Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), Office 360 calendar and email, PeopleSoft, and SurveyGizmo Special Conditions       Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development Must be able to work additional hours, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check Full-time MPP employees are required to disclose outside employment at time of hire or within 30 days of taking additional
