Northridge Academy High school 11th grade Advisory Changing the world through education academy (ce ) Advisory Description & Syllabus Room 218 Advisor: Ms Panasyan e-mail: nxp2402@lausd.net Advisory Description: The mission of the 11th grade Changing the World through Education Academy (CE) is to continue to inspire and assist each student to develop into powerful thinkers, life-long learners, culturally aware individuals, successful communicators, effective and responsible citizens and be a part of our community of learners that understand and appreciate the value of education and opportunities it has to offer We are committed to providing opportunities, experiences, knowledge and skills so that students will explore and understand how learning occurs; access, acquire, internalize and apply information both as an individual and as a part of the community of learners; develop the vision and values necessary to be critical and creative thinkers and take responsibility for their own educational growth; develop confidence in themselves as learners and leaders; and prepare for various careers Throughout this critical year, we will help our juniors to continue strengthening their interests, and learning styles while introducing them to the opportunities that await them during their junior year and beyond This year students will focus on preparing for college admission tests such as PSAT, SAT, and ACT Students will also be involved in college and career research activities to identify and explore various career opportunities and understand college admission process Advisory is NOT just a homeroom It is an opportunity to “learn about learning”, to build relationships with peers and with adults, and to develop skills that will help the student have a successful year Advisories meet every day for approximately 35 minutes, except Tuesdays for 59 During this time, students are engaged in reading, writing, discussions, college and career preparation activities and advisement on their academic standing that will assist them to succeed academically With an effort to understand and embrace life-long learning skills, the entire 11th grade will read David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell and Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert T Kiyosaki to be introduced to concepts of financial literacy and perseverance Academy Activities: 11th grade Academy is designed to promote education and college and career readiness Our Academy this year will be in charge of a few school-wide events, such as National Banned Book Week: Freedom to read and other activities that will include independent and group student research and presentations Learning Tools: Please assist your student by ensuring that he/she is using the school issued Agenda/ Planner and our school wide website – Edline.net The agenda planner will be checked weekly to ensure parent-teacher-student communication Also know that all NAHS students are expected to create a Senior Portfolio prior to graduation, therefore juniors will be working on some of the parts of the portfolio during Advisory class Expectations: This is an interactive-participatory class Each student is expected to participate and contribute to class discussions; and to fully take part in the group discussions and presentations Advisory curriculum will help you to stay on track towards your high school graduation and make good choices in life beyond high school We will follow school wide Learning Conversation Principles (LCPs) and School-wide Learner Outcomes( SLOs) that will assist in establishing appropriate learning environment (Please refer to pg in your Agenda/Planner) In order to create safe learning environment it is imperative that students conduct themselves responsibly, courteously and to be accountable for their own actions and academic success Please note that all NAHS rules will be enforced (refer to pages 1621): Violation of the school rules: Behavior conductive to a learning environment is required at all times Students who choose to disregard these expectations have a detrimental effect on their own learning, the learning of their fellow students and how well their class functions Consequences for disregarding these expectations will vary according teacher’s discretion: warning, change of the seat, phone call home, parent/teacher conference, detention after school, referral to the administration, and possible suspension *** For severe disruptions and serious school code violations student will be referred directly to the administration *** Ultimately, repeated or significantly poor decisions will result in lower cooperation and/or work habits grades Support Team: If you have specific concerns about your student’s progress in school, feel free to contact his/her counselor, Mrs Ortiz-Martinez, Mr Carmona, or myself as your child’s advisory teacher If you need more information about colleges you may contact Ms Ortega, our college counselor If you have questions about academy-wide activities, you can also contact me or Ms Shufelt as we are the 11th grade/ Academy facilitators The school telephone number is 818-700-2222 In addition, students will have their peer support providers in class to assist each other with class work and homework Materials to be brought to class daily: NAHS Agenda Planner Writing tools An “open” mind and “good will” to begin each day Composition notebook (will stay in class) [each teacher can insert their own) Grading: In Advisory, you will be evaluated on your Work Habits and Cooperation Work Habits Grade will include the following components • Homework 10% • Classwork/Performance 50% • Journaling 20% • Agenda Planner 20% Homework is comprised of getting handouts, notices, agenda planner and other official documents in on time and signed by the parent Occasionally, a project that student began in class may need to be completed at home Classwork/Performance includes attendance, participation in discussions and activities, reading, and participation in the service learning project Senior Portfolio: Students will continue working on their NAHS portfolio which they began in 9th grade Students will be expected to submit two pieces of quality work with reflections and artifacts in relation to the SLOs Agenda Planner: Students will be given a NAHS Agenda Planner at no cost for use in organizing and tracking school activities and school assignments It is expected that each student will bring the planner to every class each day to record assignments Grading will consist of weekly checks to ensure that the planner is being appropriately used Lost agenda planners can be replaced by purchasing a new one at the student store All assignments will carry points and determine your final combined Work Habit grade as follows: Excellent (E)= 90% and above Satisfactory ( S) = 70%-89% Unsatisfactory ( U) =69% or less Points will be deducted based on the following: Missing or late homework assignment Lack of participation or effort in group projects or assignments Cooperation grade includes student’s willingness to cooperate and support effort of others to learn; tardiness, behavior in class, and taking care of our classroom environment (Please refer to pages 16-21 in your planner) ***A referral to the office or a class suspension due to inappropriate behavior will result an automatic “U” in cooperation *** Unexcused Tardies and absences will affect the Cooperation Grade ( Please refer to NAHS attendance and tardy policy on page 16 in your planner) Hall Passes: Excessive uses of the hall pass will negatively affect your Cooperation grade Discuss specifics of hall pass policy with your Advisory teacher Cooperation Grade will be based on number of off-task behavior: Excellent (E)= off task behavior and/or violation of the class/school rules Satisfactory (S) = 1-3 off task behavior and/or violation of the class/school rules Unsatisfactory (U) = 4+ off task behavior and/or violation of the class/school rules Classroom and campus cleanliness: It is our responsibility to keep our school clean (Please refer to Taking Care of our Campus and Community on page 19 in your planner) My responsibilities as your 11th grade Advisor: I will help you through this important 11th grade journey to assist you in anything you need to be successful Talk to me about any concerns you might have, because I certainly care I look forward to a successful year for all!
