AP 2-D ART and DESIGN (STUDIO ART): SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS: Jolie Spelman Bishop Moore Catholic High School AP 2-D Art and Design (Studio Art) Summer Work 2019 Summer Contact info: Spelmanj@bishopmoore.org Objective You are expected to create HIGH quality, well- thought out pieces of completed artwork throughout the summer and keep a sketchbook to document the progress and concepts behind your artwork The 2020-21 AP Portfolio Class will focus on PROCESS and Development of work Your sketchbook is the place where you work out your design ideas Think of “R/D” Analogue style ● The following pages have a vast selection of summer assignments for you to choose from ● As an AP studio artist, you are expected to submit quality artworks AND a sketchbook that can be comparable to artwork produced during the course of the year ● Your summer assignment involves a time commitment of about 7-8 hours a week ● They are vital to the development of your AP Portfolio ● It will add to the required AP sections: Sustained Investigation ● In some cases, it will be a realization process for you to understand yourself better as an artist 2020-21 AP ART SUMMER ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS: 600 points – You are to complete at least FOUR of the following assignments and fill at least 16 page of a sketchbook over the summer for drawing, or 2D- you may choose any assignment in the Drawing or 2D Portfolio list to create Assignments must be turned in on time to receive credit The key to success for most of these projects is to use a VARIETY of values from black to white…AND usually keeping the saturation high with the materials NOTE: the examples provided are simply a starting point and not meant to be the only solution to the assignment SUSTAINED INVESTIGATION- In a sustained investigation you create visual answers to a question you come up with “How can I visually represent …” This Question should be specific and direct You are NOT being asked to come up with your sustained investigation question now but keep write down thoughts and ideas There are several EdPuzzle/YouTube videos that address this idea of the essential question for the AP Art Sustained investigation Materials: You will be responsible for providing your own materials Local Retail: I recommend Sam Flax Art supply and Art Systems Both will give you a generous student discount Additionally, you may order materials online from Amazon, Blick Art Supply or Nasco Art Supply REQUIRED MATERIALS: One of the MOST IMPORTANT items to purchase is a SKETCHBOOK My favorite brand and style is Canson Mixed Media x 10 or x 12 will work nicely The SECOND MOST IMPORTANT thing you can is to USE IT>>> it will no good unused Look on my Pinterest pages for “Art Journal/Sketchbook Ideas” Just fill it up, experiment, cut, draw, paste, paint and build in the sketchbook You should purchase a medium size tackle box from Walmart (Art stores sell similar boxes but they are overpriced) – Purchase as needed… I will provide many materials during the school year but it is very important you use good quality materials during the summer- get the materials AS YOU NEED THEM o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o good quality brushes for watercolor good quality brushes for oil and acrylic Set of acrylic paints (8-12 colors) 4oz tubes Set of Watercolors – tube or pan Set of Gouache Pint of Gesso -8 oz Gel medium Charcoal pencil set (extra soft, soft, and white) Kneaded eraser Blending stump Magic Rub or White eraser Drawing Pencil minimum set includes 2b, 6b and ebony pencil Masking tape or artist tape Set of 24 color pencils (Prisma-color brand is nice and relatively affordable) Bristol board 10 pages – no larger than 18 x 24 no smaller than 14 x 16 Canvas board 3-5 -– no larger than 18 x 24 no smaller than 11 x 14 Waterproof Black ink pens set of 01, 03, 05 Surfaces: Each of the pieces needs to be on an 11 x 14 to 18x 24 surface—nothing larger, nothing smaller.: Paper (nothing lighter than 80lb) , cardboard, canvas board, plywood, mat board, etc., stretched canvas – I can provide some paper and matt board to work on SKETCHBOOK – MY favorite is Canson Mixed Media x 10 Mediums: ink, color pencil, acrylic or oil paint, water color (traditional or pencil) markers, charcoal, graphite pencil, transfers PROJECT STARTERS USE BOTH LISTS TO CREATE FROM - Drawing Portfolio – includes work done in Pencil, charcoal, marker, ink, color pencil and any paint on flat surfaces 2D Portfolio- includes all of above AND: Digital Design, photography, collage, and low relief NOTE: in each of these projects below notice the depth of value and detail Notice the variety of marks on the surface and line weight Some lines are light and thin and other are heavier This is a key to making interesting compositions There are no size requirements Drawings/paintings can be small as long as they are well done DRAWING PORTFOLIO- drawing portfolios primary concentrate on MARK MAKING on flat surfaces – use these ideas as starting points but others can be done…key words in bold Do a drawing of a futuristic or realistic cityscape i.e., Dallas in the year 2050 (keep in mind rules of one, two, and three-point perspective) A variety of values in very important from very dark to very light Do a portrait, self-portrait, still-life, or landscape using either a complimentary, analogous, or splitcomplimentary color scheme (you may use black and white as well as shades and tints of the chosen hues) Do a close up of a subject work from a photo – create the entire piece in monochromatic black white and grey and take one part (4x6) and a color detail of the piece – open medium Do some exploration with mixed media Do a piece (portrait, self-portrait, landscape or still-life) in which you use at least three different medium i.e., a wet medium, a dry medium and some collage element Do graphite drawing of a still-life arrangement that consists of reflective objects your home Your goal is to convey a convincing representation with a full range of values To add interest to the composition, you might also want to render yourself being reflected in the objects – don’t forget to the background or environment Still life from Unique Point of view: Create a still life arrangement of objects and create a close up of the composition either from above or below Photos may be used to assist in the drawing of the composition Don’t forget the background or environment Create a drawing of an unusual interior for instance, looking inside a closet, cabinet, refrigerator, inside your car…use your imagination! Add a variety of line weight and values Do a drawing of your hands in a variety of poses You must carefully plan your composition in order for the separate units to work together visually Add value with cross hatching or graphite- line weight is very very important here too Use thin and heavy lines Do a color-rendering of a still life arrangement consisting of your family member’s Shoes try to convey some “sense” of each of your individual family member’s distinct personalities in your piece.- try this as a mixed media piece! 10 Do a drawing of your worldly treasures arranged in an interesting still-life composition 11 Create a self-portrait that mimics a famous portrait Evaluate all work that is intended for the final portfolio and carefully consider the inclusion of any pieces completed prior to the course or completed outside the instruction offered in this course 2D Design PORTFOLIO – all assignments are open medium 2-D may incorporate digital media, mixed media, collage and photograph where Drawing Portfolio cannot Use these projects as starting points but others can be done Metamorphosis – open medium series of works that begin with representational interpretations and evolve into abstraction Create this assignment as a collage -
