STOCKTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Teacher on Special Assignment - Ethnic Studies 2020/2021 School Year DEFINITION The Ethnic Studies Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) will provide leadership in the review and implementation of district adopted programs, curriculum materials, instructional materials and staff development The Ethnic Studies TOSA will coordinate and implement activities related to the expansion of the existing Ethnic Studies course in all high schools (including other related courses), the development of Ethnic Studies units of study for middle school grades, the management of data, and the alignment of Ethnic Studies to the California Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives direction from the Executive Director of Instructional Technology and Curriculum May supervise clerical staff as needed REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below (E) This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge or abilities associated with this classification but, is intended to accurately reflect the principle job elements Increase student achievement by providing high-quality first instruction supported by a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to graduate every single youth college, career, and community ready (E) Provide equitable and healthy learning environments that enhance the social-emotional and academic learning for all students utilizing a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) (E) Create a culture of inclusion and collaboration with families and community stakeholders that builds meaningful partnerships focused on increasing student engagement and family and community participation in support of developing leadership at all levels (E) Work with current History/Social Studies and English Language Arts Curriculum Specialists to convene a representative group of History/Social Studies and English Language Arts middle and high school teachers to explore options for infusing Ethnic Studies concepts into the current curriculum (E) Prepare finalized curriculum for both high school and middle school for publication on the District’s Curriculum website (E) Lead professional development on Ethnic Studies at both the high and middle school levels (E) Coach Ethnic Studies teachers at middle and high schools to support accelerating and sustaining student achievement and preparing students as successful 21st century citizens (E) Contribute to the design and development of SUSD’s Ethnic Studies Curriculum and support the full and effective implementation of California’s Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects, and historical thinking skills through classroom observations, individualized feedback, demonstration lessons and facilitation of site-based visits (E) Identify, design, disseminate, implement, and evaluate of best practices and models in Ethnic Studies instruction to deliver/enhance student learning and professional development for teachers (E) Develop tools and resources that support rigorous, quality Ethnic Studies instruction and facilitate analysis of student achievement (E) Establish and maintain collaborative and supportive internal and external partnerships that support accelerated and sustained student growth and achievement in Ethnic Studies (E) Plan and facilitate initiatives designed to build teacher capacity (E) Address the issues of race/ethnicity, language, culture, and underserved populations as they impact Ethnic Studies instruction in the classroom (E) Examine their own sociocultural identities and the inequalities between schools and society that support institutionalized discrimination to maintain a privileged society based on social class and skin color (E) Inspect and confront any negative attitudes they might have toward cultural groups (E) Possess an affirming attitude toward students from culturally diverse backgrounds (E) Exhibit a commitment and possess the skills to act as agents of change (E) Recognize the potential of bias in their representation of the discipline and seek to appropriately address problems of bias (E) Commit to support a constructivist view of knowledge, teaching, and learning for teachers; to assist students to construct knowledge, build on their personal and cultural strengths, and examine the curriculum from multiple perspectives (E) Respect learners’ diverse strengths and needs and be committed to using this information to plan effective instruction (E) Perform other duties as assigned QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of:  Ethnic Studies as a discipline and/or experience working with an organization on issues aligned with the Ethnic Studies curriculum  Adult professional development theory  Effective instructional practices to include differentiated instruction and supports for English language learners  California’s Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects, historical thinking skills, educational issues and trends  Practices and trends related to the integration of technology into instruction  Researching, interpreting, analyzing, reporting, and utilizing data and evaluating processes and resources  Operating a computer and accessing internet resources Ability to:  Designing professional development activities, conducting meetings and presentations, facilitating work group activities  Developing curriculum maps, unit and lesson plans  Work with a variety of individuals and groups and coordinate activities  Communicate effectively orally and in written form  Manage time and tasks  Exercise sound judgment  Model norms of behavior that reflect high expectations for colleagues, students, and community members  Coach or mentor teachers  Address equity issues related to access and achievement     Work effectively with underserved student populations Coordinate and organize educational and community resources Work successfully with multiple audiences, including school-based parents/community members, and students Participate in professional organizations, district and state initiatives administrators, teachers, Education and Experience: ● A minimum of five years satisfactory teaching experience ● Direct experience teaching Ethnic Studies at the K-12 level within the previous years ● Strong content knowledge of history and literacy, and ability to apply it to teaching and learning ● Completion of at least one (1) Ethnic Studies course during their college career, or possess extensive professional experience in the realm of social justice, preferably in the San Joaquin Valley License or Certificate:  Valid CA Drivers License ● A CLAD or higher level of EL authorization  Possession of a valid teaching credential WORKING CONDITIONS: Environment:  Office, school, and outside work setting  Subject to frequent interruptions and daily contact with District staff, students, and parents  Frequent driving to District Office and/or other locations Physical Demands: Employees in this position must have/be able to:  Enter data into a computer terminal and operate standard office equipment  Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone with or without Assistive hearing devices  See and read a computer screen and printed matter with or without vision aids  See, hear and speak with/without assistive devices sufficient to communicate effectively with others  Sit for extended periods of time  Bend at the waist  Reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, grasp, push/pull  Lift and/or carry up to 25 lbs at waist height for short distances SALARY PLACEMENT STA Salary Schedule Standard number of work days plus 10 extra days
