ASBC Foundation Co-hosting the 2020 HBCU Fair with the Alfred Street Baptist Church We Believe In Education ASBC has held education in high esteem since its beginning in 1803 As early as 1825, the church opened its first school on-site to educate local youth In 2002, ASBC saw the need for an even greater involvement in its support of the area’s youth That year, the church voted to form a separate Foundation dedicated to supporting the church’s educational outreach efforts The Foundation was to be a non-profit, charitable organization that was organized as a Virginia non-stock corporation The organization formally received its 501(c)(3) non-profit status in 2005 and was eligible to begin accepting tax deductible donations and be-OUR MISSION- In 2006, the ASBC Foundation Board voted to have as its primary focus area, the awarding of multiple-year college scholarships for financially challenged high school graduating seniors And that has been our primary focus since then All students must meet select academic and financial need criteria Our ideal candidate is a high achiever whose family is unable to meet the cost of higher education That describes the ideal student, though actual grades and the needs of scholarship recipients vary The Foundation awards two types of scholarships, Millennium and Legacy The Millennium Scholarships are funded by the ASBC Foundation and ASBC itself The amount of these scholarships is $20,000 disbursed over four years ($5,000 per year for four years) Two Millennium Scholarships are awarded annually The Legacy Scholarships are funded by individuals and groups who add their own criteria to Foundation requirements and determine the amounts awarded Thus, someone may add a criterion that they desire a female student in STEM attending an HBCU Another donor may desire to support a student whose parents are incarcerated Legacy Scholarships vary from $1000 up to $20,000 -OUR PRODUCT- In 2007, the ASBC Foundation awarded its first scholarships to eleven graduating seniors from the Washington, DC Metropolitan area who planned on attending a four-year college or university Those scholarships totaled $75,000 For the 2019-20 school year, the Foundation awarded $159,500 in new scholarships to 46 high school students and divinity school students, and $29,500 in scholarship renewals to 15 prior winners for a total of $189,000, for 72 scholarship awards The 2019-20 scholarship recipients attended 30 of our nation’s top universities, including 10 HBCUs Since 2007 the Alfred Street Baptist Church Foundation (Foundation) has awarded nearly $1.5 million dollars for 332 scholarship awards to students in the Washington Metropolitan area Nearly 27% of those students were not able to receive any support from their families Fifteen of the twenty-one Millennium Scholars fit that category Some of our students had filed for independent status, some were living in cars and many were from single-parent home The Foundation makes a concerted effort to reach students who are economically challenged, yet still excel academically despite the odds If requested we provide some students with additional financial assistance, counseling and other support As a result, we have a 97% success rate based on first semester college GPA’s of 2.0 or above Since 2007, our students have attended 102 of our nation’s top universities A FEW OF THE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS 2019 Millennium Scholar O V E R T H E Y E A R S Adelina Decius (W.T Woodson High School) American University - Law/ Foreign Policy 2019 Millennium Scholar $20,000 ($5,000/yr for years) While in high school, Adelina had been challenged by frequent moves and attended four different high schools Her faith in God enabled her to become stable and spiritually grounded after moving in with an aunt She says, “The transition from high school to college can be quite an adjustment I vividly remember move-in day and the rush of excitement I felt about moving to D.C Walking on campus and swiping my American University (AU) card felt surreal Decorating my room with my family seems like a nostalgic memory Everything I ever wanted and dreamed of was happening so fast For the first time, I had a new slate where I could create whatever life I wanted for myself and I could be whomever I wanted to be I explored AU’s campus and found my secret places of joy I attended events on campus and began to create a community of friends I visited different bookstores, art museums, and restaurants in D.C just to get a feel for the city I thoroughly enjoyed the process of curating the life I have always wanted Thank you Alfred Street Baptist Church Foundation for this opportunity! sororities, church ministries and other organizations who provide their own criteria (e.g., specific college, specific gender, HBCU, PWI, STEM, specific majors) in addition to the Foundation’s general criteria Some Legacy scholarships are funded for one year, others for all four years The 69 Legacy Scholarships (new and renewals) awarded in 2019 vary from $1,000 to $20,000 and were funded by various individuals and organizations as indicated below Listed at the top is a scholarship funded by the annual income from our first major donation, Mrs Jacqueline Henry-Greene (the former director of the Senior Choir, now named Trinity), who donated her entire estate (house, investments, miscellaneous) to the Foundation The table below summarizes the categories of Legacy Scholarships, the donations come via this instrument Members and organizations who desire to honor a deceased family member or organizations who wish to honor a special leader find the Legacy Scholarships a convenient vehicle for meeting these goals Current Legacy scholarships include awards directed to students who major in business, computer science, engineering, music, etc.; or students attending HBCUs; or students who have been in foster care or whose parents are incarcerated Legacy Scholarships can be initiated for as little as $1,000, though some families choose to donate as much as $20,000 to honor Vice-President of the Foundation for 2009-2015 before being elected Chair of the Board of Deacons for 2016-2018 She has served as a deacon at ASBC for 20 years and served as Vice Chair of the Pulpit Committee that called Pastor Howard-John Wesley as ASBC’s 8th pastor in 2008 Professionally, Deacon Wallace retired as an Engineering Center manager for Northrop Grumman Corporation following a long career in software development and project management She has a B.S degree from NC A&T State University in Engineering Mathematics She has been a member of ASBC since 1983 VICE PRESIDENT matters of the Foundation Mr McKnight has over 30 years of experience in financial services, investment management, estate planning and tax consulting He is a Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) and holds securities licenses and various insurance licenses with the State of Virginia, and contiguous states in life, health, disability and Long-Term Care He is also a practicing Enrolled Agent (EA)
