Lead Educator Responsibilities Sweetbriar Nature Center would like to invite qualified, committed individuals who enthusiastically support our mission of providing nature education and wildlife rehabilitation to the residents of Long Island Minimum Qualification: • • • • • • • • • • • years of college or outdoor education experience in Life/Earth Science, Nature Interpretation, Environmental Studies, Outdoor Education or related field Comfortable handling birds of prey, reptiles and small mammals (training provided) Experience teaching elementary children in formal or informal setting preferred Strong interest in and commitment to environmental stewardship Ability to work as a positive team member both independently and as a team Must be able to hike and lead groups through forested areas Desire to plan and lead games, songs, classes and other activities with groups of children Current first aid and CPR certification are desirable Knowledge of Windows required Grant writing skills is desirable Managerial skills are vital along with the ability to multi-task Duties Include but not limited to: • • • • • • • • Be able to teach all programs offered at the nature center and off site Coordinate with the Program Coordinator, to promote the programs to schools, libraries, scout groups and other organizations through social media, direct contact with educators, school fairs, Sweetbriar events, and by word of mouth Maintain, develop and implement quality programs that are pertinent to school curriculum, interactive and handson for the students, and evaluate their effectiveness Coordinate with the Program Coordinator the hiring, training, supervising and evaluating center education staff so that quality programs are consistently presented to students Make sure all program materials and props are available and in good condition for the educators Coordinate programs with the Program Coordinator Supporting other staff by assisting with animal care, wildlife rehab and other center tasks when needed Oversee and lead the Summer Discovery Program and all other school break programs ➢ Produce brochures and flyers to be disseminated to the public and past participants by snail mail, e-mail, our website and attending special events organized by libraries, schools, chambers of commerce, museums and other organizations Organize an annual open house ➢ Develop and implement fun and exciting programs for the children throughout their full day or full week experiences at the nature center and continually evaluate their effectiveness ➢ Make sure that there is a safe and friendly environment during the children’s stay by walking the trails, having first aid kits available along with an additional person certified in first aid, and by having one supervisor and at least one helper for every six children ➢ Interview, hire, train and evaluate interns, teen assistants, including providing an orientation, first aid and animal handling workshops, and end of the year evaluations ➢ Prepare for all aspects of the program including organizing field trips and onsite educational workshops for the participants, ordering craft, recreation, first aid, and other vital materials, and having all necessary letters, registration forms, and reminders for parents ready to go Organize payment, and communication with parents Salary based on level of experience 30-40 hours
