Mana Contemporary New Media Program Residency 2019–20 Philip Mulliken, still from Space Is the Vehicle, 2019 Courtesy of the artist CHICAGO, IL July 9, 2019—Mana Contemporary is pleased to announce the first four artists-in-residence for the 2019–20 New Media Program residency, in partnership with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) Designed to support the next generation of new media artists, the program will take place over two sessions, from August 2019–January 2020, and from February–July 2020 The first four residents have been selected from a pool of recent SAIC graduates who have been nominated by the school The program supports interdisciplinary artists and aims to foster innovation and collaboration in the field of new media As part of the community-based residency, the artists—Wanbli Gamache, Anneli Goeller, Christopher Lee Hare, and Phil Mulliken—will work in a collective studio and engage with the public through self-generated programming collaborations include New Museum’s NEW INC, Nokia Bell Labs, Giphy, NYU Interactive Telecommunications Program, and Rutgers University WANBLI GAMACHE Wanbli Gamache works at the intersection of transgender identity and media representations of erotic imagery She explores the issues of spectacle, authorship, and intimacy within new technological transmissions through virtual and simulated bodies Gamache has exhibited work at Links Hall, SAIC’s Sullivan Galleries, Zhou B Art Center, and ACRE Gallery, Chicago; and the Supernova Digital Animation Festival in Denver, Colorado ANNELI GOELLER Anneli Goeller uses 3D simulation and artificial intelligence as speculative tools to create algorithmic selves and expand the concept of personhood Their work seeks to define queer narratives within the digital realm, expanding identity via data ownership Goeller received their MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, concentrating in film, video, new media, and animation They have been exhibited internationally and on the Internet CHRISTOPHER LEE HARE Christopher Lee Hare is an artist and writer based in Chicago He analyzes connections between poetic forms of space, body, ornament, and movement Originally from North Carolina, Hare received a BFA in sculpture from Appalachian State University He relocated to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he graduated with an MFA concentrating in art and technology studies PHILIP MULLIKEN Phil Mulliken is a new media artist, writer, and perpetual student of literature He holds an MFA in writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA in English literature from the University of Maryland Mulliken works between writing, high definition computer graphics, and sculpture He has exhibited works at Links Hall and SAIC’s Sullivan Galleries in Chicago This residency is a component of Mana’s commitment to supporting the production and presentation of work focused on the intersection of art and technology Through specialized residencies, exhibitions, and programming across all Mana Contemporary locations, the program aims to foster new creative voices and involve the public in experimentation and development in the field ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO (SAIC) The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) is a leader in educating the world’s most influential artists, designers, and scholars Located in downtown Chicago with a fine arts graduate program consistently ranking among the top programs in the nation by U.S News and World Report, SAIC provides an interdisciplinary approach to art and design as well as world-class resources SAIC students have the freedom to take risks and create the bold ideas that transform Chicago and the world—as seen through notable alumni and faculty such as Michelle Grabner, David Sedaris, Elizabeth Murray, Richard Hunt, Georgia O’Keeffe, Cynthia Rowley, Nick Cave, Jeff Koons, and LeRoy Neiman SAIC’s partnership with Mana Contemporary further enhances the New Media Program through creative collaborations and partnerships with leading-edge thinkers, institutions, and organizations Past and current ABOUT MANA CONTEMPORARY Founded in 2011, Mana Contemporary is dedicated to providing a platform for contemporary art and artists through exhibitions, residencies, and public programs Mana’s community network began in New Jersey and has since expanded to include Mana Contemporary Chicago and Mana Contemporary Miami A continuous creation of new partnership opportunities explore the intersection of contemporary art, design, new technologies, and music For more information, visit manacontemporary.com CONTACT Alison L Roberts press@manacontemporary.com CONNECT @manacontemporary #manacontemporary Mana Contemporary 2233 S Throop Street Chicago, IL 60608
