NAWA Announces the 2019 Winner of the $5,000 Margo Harris Hammerschlag Competition for Direct Carving: Susan Clinard The National Association of Women Artists, Inc (NAWA) is pleased to announce Susan Clibard as the winner of the 2019 Margo Harris Hammerschlag $5,000 Competition for Direct Carving Ms Clinard is a contemporary figurative sculptor residing in New Haven, Connecticut Following her dual degree in Sculpture and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Michigan, she moved to Chicago, where she taught stone carving at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and sculpture at the Palette and Chisel Academy and Gallery 37 Susan works in wood, clay, bronze, stone and mixed media Her work reflects her strong desire to honor nature's pure form She finds inspiration in humanity's constant cycle of tearing down and rebuilding Her work explores the duality between the ugly and the beautiful; she cannot see one without the other - they are one and the same See www.clinard.org for information on the winner Founded in 1889, NAWA is the first established professional women's art organization in the U.S NAWA's documented exhibitions are archived within the Smithsonian Institution Archives; the Museum of Modern Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum; the Zimmerli Art Museum; Rutgers University; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries at the Art Institute of Chicago; the Library of Congress; the National Museum of Women in the Arts; the Frick Art Reference Library; and the New York Public Library https://www.thenawa.org
