Correlation Between School Readiness Goals Denton ISD Head Start I Texas Pre-Kindergarten Guidelines LANGUAGE AND LITERACY A Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program will demonstrate use of vocabulary that is both increasingly complex and varied Opportunities will be provided to children to verbally label pictures, actions, and objects related to district developed thematic units Anecdotal records will provide documentation Vocabulary development will be included as part of science activities SALSA trained teachers will have had training which includes scientific vocabulary Anecdotal records will provide documentation The Growing with Mathematics curriculum adopted by the district includes specific strategies for development of math vocabulary including vocabulary related to position, size, time, addition, subtraction, and comparative words Anecdotal records will provide documentation Additionally, the district TPKG Checklist will be used to document progress Steady growth in the development of vocabulary will be documented through anecdotal records, language sampling, and district assessments for both English speaking students and those that are learning English as a second language D Vocabulary Skills II.D.1 Child uses a wide variety of words to label and describe people, places, things, and actions SBB D Vocabulary Skills II.D.2 Child demonstrates understanding of terms used in the instructional language of the classroom II.D.5 Child uses category labels to understand how the words/objects relate to each other SBB B Adding To/Taking Away Skills V.B.1 Child uses concrete models or makes a verbal word problem for adding up to objects V.B.2 Child uses concrete models or makes a verbal word problem for subtracting 1–5 objects from a set SBB D Vocabulary Skills II.D.3 Child demonstrates understanding in a variety of ways or knowing the meaning of 3,000 to 4,000 words, many more than he or she uses II.D.4 Child uses a large speaking vocabulary, adding several new words daily II.D.5 Child uses category labels to understand how the words/objects relate to each other II.D.6 Child increases listening vocabulary and begins to develop vocabulary of object names and common phrases in English (ELL) SBB I LANGUAGE AND LITERACY B Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program will use language for a variety of pragmatic (social) purposes Preschool classroom in Denton ISD including Crayton those that comprise the Head Start Program are designed to foster conversations between children and between children and the adults in their environment The Environmental Checklist will be used to assure that classroom adhere to an appropriate plan that facilitates conversations Children will be given the opportunity to Crayton relate past and present events and well as discuss events that might be occurring in the future Anecdotal records will provide documentation As a part of the science and social studies Crayton curriculum they will engage in brainstorming activities, sequence events, identify causeeffect relationships, and identify similarities and differences Work samples such as Thinking Maps and anecdotal records will provide documentation Throughout the year students will develop Crayton the ability to follow multiple-step directions Anecdotal records and checklists will provide documentation Language sampling will indicate an increase Crayton the mean length of utterances for both English speaking students and those who are learning English as a second language I LANGUAGE AND LITERACY C Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program will demonstrate the ability to identify the sounds that occur within a word, discriminate between sounds, and separate a word into its parts (phonemic segmentation) Literacy activities developed as a Cunningham collaborative effort between PK teachers, experts in the development of reading skills (Reading Recovery Teachers), and curriculum specialist with the district include the identification of sounds in isolation and in words Anecdotal records will provide documentation The district TPKG Check will also be used Activities also include manipulation of sounds Cunningham in words through sound blending activities, phonemic segmentation, and sound deletion Anecdotal records will provide documentation The district TPKG Check will also be used Lesson plans will provide further documentation of instruction in these skills Children develop awareness of syllables Cunningham through age appropriate activities such as clapping the syllables in words Anecdotal records will provide documentation The district TPKG Check will also be used Lesson plans will provide further documentation of instruction in these skills Exploring rhymes occurs through literacy Cunningham activities with an emphasis on literature Anecdotal records will provide documentation The district TPKG Check will also be used Lesson plans will provide further documentation of instruction in these skills I LANGUAGE AND LITERACY D Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program will demonstrate awareness of print as a means of communication Ongoing assessment using assessment tools Garcia developed as a collaborative effort with district prekindergarten teachers and the elementary curriculum department is used to monitor ongoing acquisition of letter recognition and sound-symbol association For younger children emphasis is on Garcia recognition of letters in their names Concepts about print are monitored throughout the year as are book handling skills Books are readily available in the literacy Garcia centers in the classrooms as well as in the campus library Children are also given the opportunity to Garcia hear books read to them This occurs not only in the classroom but through instructional activities in conjunction with the Denton Public Library, education majors from the three area colleges, and Denton ISD high school students enrolled in a vocational education program focused on exploration of teaching as a career Children are given the opportunity to author Garcia books in conjunction with activities in the areas of math, science, and social studies as well as literacy Children and their fathers are invited to participate in the Fathers Reading Every Day project II COGNITION AND KNOWLEDGE A Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program will develop logical thinking skills through the use of Thinking Map strategies Prekindergarten teachers in Denton ISD including Head Start teachers have been trained in the use of Thinking Map charts These are used to help students organize information Govea Teachers are encouraged to display these Govea products for reference as units progress II COGNITION AND KNOWLEDGE B Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program will use thinking skills including observation, manipulation, questioning, predicting, and hypotheses development to foster development of, and organization of information related their surroundings Ongoing data collection through activities Govea such as Science Journals, experiment logs, and diaries are used to foster skill development in young children as they describe what they see, hear, feel, smell, and touch within their environment Scientific inquiry is encouraged through Govea guided questioning Prediction occurs in relation to math, science, and social studies units Recognition of naturally occurring patterns is Govea included as an observational skill II COGNITION AND KNOWLEDGE C Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program will continue to increase their metacognition skills (thinking about thinking skills) related to long-term and short-term memory Children will be encouraged to think about Narcisse past events with every increasing distance from the present (e.g., How did we use the markers last week? What did the butterfly garden look like when school started?) Anecdotal records provide documentation of skill development Memory skills for academic readiness will be Narcisse fostered through daily exposure to literacy and numeracy concepts Anecdotal records provide documentation of skill development Problem solving skills will be fostered within Narcisse the social skills context as well as in academic areas Anecdotal records provide documentation of skill development III PHYSICAL WELL-BEING AND MOTOR DEVELOPMENT A Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program will demonstrate the ability to control large muscles for movement, for navigation, and for balance Children will engage in daily physical activity Narcisse When the weather is appropriate they will access the playground where age appropriate equipment is provided to foster climbing and jumping skill development Teacher lesson plans reflect this activity Extra wide sidewalks were included as a part of the outside classroom design as well as a paved patio area for riding large tricycles A berm was included as a part of the architectural design of the outdoor classroom to provide differing surfaces for running Children will participate in a weekly Physical Education class taught by a graduate student in Kinesiology in cooperation with Texas Women’s University Teacher lesson plans reflect this activity I don’t think this will happen per Sacha Head Start children will also have the opportunity to participate in a swimming/exercise program in conjunction with the Kinesiology Department at Texas Woman’s University with each child have a student to work with them in the water Teacher lesson plans reflect this activity On days when access to the outside classroom is not appropriate children will engage in large motor activities in the Activity Center using a variety of equipment including balls, scooter boards, balance beams, parachutes, and scarves Teacher lesson plans reflect this activity In conjunction with the Denton ISD Head Start Program Community Partner of Texas Woman’s University Nutrition Department, a Diabetes Program has been implemented Narcisse IX PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT DOMAIN AREA A Gross Motor Development Skills IX.A.1 Child demonstrates coordination and balance in isolation (may not yet coordinate consistently with a partner) IX.A.2 Child coordinates sequence of movements to perform tasks SBB D Personal Safety and Health Skills VI.D.3 Child identifies good habits of nutrition and exercise SBB PHYSICAL WELL-BEING AND MOTOR DEVELOPMENT B Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program will develop increasing control of fine motor muscles Naturally occurring opportunities such as meal time and self-care activities (tooth brushing, toileting) occur multiple times throughout the day Other opportunities are structured by the B Fine-Motor Development Skills teacher to foster fine motor skill IX.B.1 Child shows control of tasks that require development These include block and/or small-muscle strength and control manipulation centers, computer center, IX.B.2 Child shows increasing control of tasks that writing center, and art center require eye-hand coordination III SBB Teachers have been trained in the strategies used in Handwriting Without Tears III PHYSICAL WELL-BEING AND MOTOR DEVELOPMENT B Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program will be able to identify healthy and safe habits as well as demonstrate competency in performing targeted health skills Representative healthy habits fostered on a daily basis in the Head Start classroom include hand washing, tooth brushing, wearing coats in cold weather, and safety with objects such as scissors or pencils D Personal Safety and Health Skills VI.D.1 Child practices good habits of personal safety VI.D.2 Child practices good habits of personal health and hygiene SBB During meal and snack times nutrition is VI.D.3 Child identifies good habits of nutrition discussed Lessons on tooth brushing are and exercise taught by dental hygiene students from Texas Woman’s University Students enrolled SBB in a program of study for becoming a nutritionist may be brought in to present age appropriate lessons on nutrition Nursing students from local colleges may be brought in to provide lessons related to health and safety Carts used to bring student food from the VI.D.3 Child identifies good habits of nutrition kitchen to the classroom are decorated with and exercise posters related to nutrition Teachers talk with students about the food they are eating SBB Food models are included in the home living IV APPROACHES TO LEARNING A Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program will become increasingly independent in their participation in activities and the use of materials within the Head Start classroom, show an increased eagerness to learn, and demonstrate a willingness to take a risk and participate in activities focused on creativity In conjunction with the Denton ISD EXPO Nunez Program (gifted & talented education program), a teacher trained in Gifted Education guides students in activities designed to foster the development of high order thinking skills as well as creativity through the STEP program The Head Start classroom is planned with an Nunez emphasis on student’s being active participants in learning To this end, the Head Start classroom is provisioned with learning centers and materials such as puzzles, computer, blocks, and science center When weather is appropriate, sand and Nunez water play are available on the patio area Children’s work is displayed throughout the classroom and in the hallway Children are encouraged to tell adult visitors Nunez to their classrooms about their work IV APPROACHES TO LEARNING B Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program will increase in their ability to attend to instruction and their ability to sustain attention when working on an activity or in a center The daily schedule allows time for students to Orozco engage in work that is not directed by the adults in the classroom Center time is an example of such a time Table work with an adult during small group Orozco instruction is another example Students often begin Head Start without the Orozco ability to sustain attention for periods of time longer than a few minutes By the time children leave Head Start and transition to kindergarten they should be able to sustain attention to a task for 20 to 30 minutes Progress on the development of this skill will be documented through anecdotal records IV APPROACHES TO LEARNING C Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program will demonstrate the ability to acquire and use vocabulary related to units of study including math and science language Children in the Head Start classrooms are provided instruction in the Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines which include Math and Science Within each of these curriculum areas are specialized vocabulary Teachers will make note of student’s exposure to these specialized vocabularies in their lesson plans Acquisition and use of these will be documented in anecdotal records kept for each child Science and Math journals will also be used as evidence of student progress V Orozco Orozco SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT A Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program engage in positive interactions with adults Children are encouraged to make their wants and needs known to the adults in their environment through words, gestures, pictures, or signs Anecdotal records provide information about student progress Children are encouraged to seek information from an adult This could include assistance in learning how to use materials, look for information, or use a computer program Photographs are an example of how teachers monitor progress in a student’s use of the computer This is also included in the TPKG Checklist Qualls Qualls Positive adult interaction may include using Qualls the adult as a resource to guide problem solving related to difficulties with a social interaction, completing a task, or pursuing an interest Information about positive adult interactions is included in anecdotal records Positive social interactions can occur with Qualls adults outside the classroom including college students, other staff members, and volunteers within the school Such interactions may take on the form of showing an adult something that the child has accomplished Information about positive adult interactions is included in anecdotal records Development of positive social interactions Qualls with an adult for some Head Start children may take the form of participation in Play Therapy in conjunction with the Counseling Program at the University of North Texas V SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT B Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program will engage in positive interactions with peers The organization of the Head Start classroom Rodgers-Smith with center facilitates peer-to-peer interaction as does the outdoor classroom The Environmental Checklist assures that classrooms are organized to facilitate such interactions Centers are designed for multiple Rodgers-Smith participants with the exception of the computer center which may be limited to one child per computer dependent upon the program being utilized in the center The Environmental Checklist assures that classrooms are organized to facilitate such interactions Conscious Discipline strategies as developed Rodgers-Smith by Dr Becky Bailey are used in all Head Start classrooms to the development of problem solving related to social interactions CHAMPS strategies modified for the age of Head Start students are used throughout the school to provide consistency V SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT C Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program will demonstrate the ability to monitor and adjust their levels of attention, emotion, and behavior to the situation Head Start students as encouraged to persist Vazquez when engaging in tasks they perceive to be too difficult Anecdotal records provide information about a student’s persistence in a task Adults provide support and gradually Vazquez withdraw the support to the point of independent functioning by the child Anecdotal records provide information about a student’s independent functioning While times when children may become Vazquez upset are anticipated, Head Start staff guide the child through these difficulties so that reactions decrease in intensity and more positive responses are seen Behavioral records are used to monitor growth Children are encouraged to identify how Vazquez they feel in a given situation with an increase in positive feelings seen as evidence in anecdotal records With maturity that comes over time and with Vazquez instruction, children develop the ability to attend to instruction for longer periods of time, to sustain attention when working on a task, and when working in a small group This is documented in anecdotal records V SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT D Children enrolled in the Denton ISD Head Start Program will internalize and apply the classroom rules, routines, procedures, and directions Classroom rules are written in simple, logical language using strategies developed by Dr Becky Bailey in your Positive Discipline approach Rules include pictures to help young children internalize them No more than five rules are used A daily picture schedule with words and pictures is used to develop understanding of the routine of the day If a change is to occur, children are prepared in advance through the use of the picture schedule Procedures are practiced and reviewed as needed Adults in the Head Start classroom begin with simple directions gradually providing more complex directions Individualization occurs for those children that continue to have difficulty with multistep directions Transitions are planned rather than occurring in a haphazard manner Zellers
