fakulta v Hradci Králové Hradec Králové Czech Republic Sunday, September 5, 2021 For most of us, Sunday was the travel day Even though the weather wasn´t very nice in the past days, Salzburg welcomed us with a warm sunny afternoon I met some fellows from the course at the train station, and we decided to walk to our accommodation in order to already see a bit of the city and to enjoy the views of the castle In the evening, we met with the rest of the fellows from the group and with the faculty for a nice dinner, which was a great start for the whole week Monday, September 6, 2021 I decided to use some time before breakfast for a small run up the hill Kapuzinerberg Our scientific program then started with a pre-seminar test and continued with lectures, mainly concerning the upcoming lab-trainings We were guided through main anatomy of the temporal bone, important landmarks, and procedures that we would on our specimens The presentations were filled with 3D animations and videos, which made it much clearer to understand We went for a drink at the riverbank before dinner and went to bed quite early, as we were all excited about the days with drilling © Open Medical Institute 2021 FELLOW’S DIARY Otology and Temporal Bone Surgery Tuesday, September 7, 2021 The temporal bone lab is situated in the Anatomical institute of Paracelsus University where we all gathered in the morning We shared a working space with one other fellow, but everybody was working on his own temporal bone The space was equipped with microscopes, drills, suction, and all other necessary instruments, which was great We started with canalplasty, stapedectomy and continued with mastoidectomy, identifying the important structures The highlight of the day was facial recess approach and insertion of the CI electrode During the whole lab time the faculty were strolling between us, helping, guiding, and advising, as well as the people from the supporting companies who were very helpful As the lab was situated on the opposite side of the old city, we decided to walk the way back on our own to fetch a beer and a bit of the afternoon sun Wednesday, September 8, 2021 We continued with our dissection, labyrinthectomy, canal wall down technique, dissection of the facial nerve, internal acoustic meatus, exploration of the tympanic cavity and finally finding the internal carotid artery Seeing the structures and dissecting into this depth was a great way to understand the relationships between them, and I consider this as one of the most important parts of this course In the afternoon, we started with presenting our case-reports I think we all could learn something from how the patients are treated in other countries, as we heard about some very rare diseases Lastly, it was a good opportunity to present in English Thursday, September 9, 2021 The following morning, we continued with lecture sessions, getting back to temporal bone anatomy, and putting things in relation with the dissections We received a great overview of temporal bone cancer, surgery of the ear canal, and tympanoplasty techniques We discussed surgery of vestibular disorders and endoscopic surgery We closed with some last casepresentations of the fellows As we ended very well on time, we went for a walk to the Kapuzinerberg, to see the monastery there In the evening, we enjoyed a beautiful concert with the music of Mozart, in the Great Chamber of the Schloss Arenberg, and a drink with the faculty Friday, September 10, 2021 We closed the whole week with the last morning session of lectures concerning ossiculoplasty, temporal bone trauma, BAHA, petrous apex approaches, and the post-seminar test We could spend some more hours in the city before the farewell reception and dinner We had a great week at Schloss Arenberg The amount of time and energy that was put in this seminar from the faculty, as well as from the organizers, was really amazing I am very grateful for the opportunity to be here The seminar was packed with information, practical experience, and many great tips from experienced surgeons from all over the world Nonetheless, it was nice meeting doctors
