TOURO COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY SYSTEM SEED FUNDING GRANT PROGRAM in the BIOMEDICAL/HEALTH SCIENCES Guidelines – 2016 Seed Funding Grants encourage development of new, innovative research projects in the biomedical and health sciences throughout the Touro College and University System with an anticipated high probability of future extramural funding This program is not intended for bridge support of existing, active research programs Eligibility: • Only full-time faculty at Touro College and Touro University and full-time faculty with an unmodified rank at New York Medical College are eligible for funding through this program (Examples of modified ranks are: Research Associate Professor, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine) • Applications must have at least two Principal Investigators (PIs) from different schools/colleges in the Touro System For example, one PI might be from the Lander College for Women and another PI from TouroCOM on 125th Street in Manhattan; or one PI might be from the Pharmacy school in California and another PI might be from NYMC This program does not define "collaboration" as involving two PIs from two different departments within the same school or college However, collaboration among different schools at NYMC or within a single Touro campus could qualify, although it is not the primary goal of the program • The participation of multiple PIs must be fully justified by the project aims and goals • The application must clearly and convincingly demonstrate that the proposed project embodies a new research direction and represents a substantive and meaningful collaboration—i.e., there is a demonstrable fundamental intellectual partnership that is central to the design and conduct of the research and analysis of results • The proposal must not overlap with any existing sponsored projects within the System Submission and Review Process: • Applications are due on February 29, 2016 • Faculty may participate in only one proposal per application cycle • Proposals that have previously been submitted to an extramural funding source for the same or a closely related project are not eligible for Seed Funding Grant awards • Applications are expected to identify the extramural funding source(s) that will be targeted, and, where known, the likely deadline(s) involved, for the next phase of project support • Applications will be reviewed by an internal review panel comprised of investigators who have active research programs and grant review experience at the national level (e.g NIH or AHA) Composition of the review panel may vary for each submission deadline so as to ensure appropriate content expertise • All proposals will be scored using NIH criteria modified by a weighting factor A short written review will be provided to applicants Funding: • Applications may request support in $25,000 modules, up to $100,000 Applications seeking support of $50,000 or less will be evaluated as one cohort; applications seeking support greater than $50,000 will be evaluated as a second cohort Requested budgets may be subject to revision • Proposals that are not funded at the first submission may be revised and re-submitted at a subsequent deadline consistent with the solicitation announcement However, such proposals must also specifically and carefully address the issues raised by the initial Seed Funding Grant review • Funds are intended for direct cost support of laboratory personnel, supplies, and services With strong justification, equipment and/or travel costs necessary to conduct the research may be requested These funds are not intended to support a PI’s salary • If the PIs are successful at obtaining external funding for the project during the Seed Funding Grant performance period, unexpended funds will revert back to the supporting program Where allowable and appropriate, charging pre-award costs to a new grant is to be pursued TOURO COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY SYSTEM SEED FUNDING GRANT PROGRAM in the BIOMEDICAL/HEALTH SCIENCES Instructions Download all application forms to your local computer Using the full Adobe Acrobat (not Reader) you may then complete and save each form (1/2 inch margins, 11 pt Arial font) Face Page: One PI should be selected as the contact PI and all communication will be with that individual Institutional approvals for use of human subjects, animals, and/or biohazards will be required on a just-in-time basis Research Plan (limit pages, excluding references): Include specific aims, significance and impact, brief research strategy providing an overall rationale for the experimental approaches proposed (avoiding highly specific details regarding scientific methods) Include a clear statement describing the nature of the collaborative arrangement, the roles of the collaborating PIs and potential funding sources References (limit pages): Provide complete references, including all authors & full title, to publications cited in your research plan Font as above NIH Biosketch (limit pages): Include a biosketch for the PIs and Co-Investigators List the current, pending and recent past funding (2 years) available to each applicant List all publications (published or in press only) in the past five years (Form and sample are provided) Budget: Use the form provided Funds cannot be used for investigators’ salaries, renovation, membership dues, or indirect costs or IRB fees to other institutions Budget Justification (limit 1page): All items must be fully justified, following the format of the budget page;
