It is truly been an amazing year this year with our Sheridan Sharks! We have grown both academically and behaviorally, shared our stories, and we continue to make a lot of progress! Even though only a short time is left, we have multiple opportunities for involvement and participation coming up in April and May Beginning Monday, April 5, all students 3rd -5th grade will begin taking the PARCC assessment Testing and make-up days run from April 5th -April 20th Please make sure your child is on time to school those days, has plenty of rest at night, and appointments are scheduled outside of our school day Please encourage your child to eat breakfast either at home or at school All of our students and teachers have worked diligently to prepare your child for this test All students in grades 1-5 will also be participating in the NWEA MAP assessment, beginning April 16 through May 11 We are celebrating our arts! Please visit the Bloomington Public Library to see all of our beautiful art projects from our schools! Tuesday, May st is our 4th and 5th grade recorder and ukulele concert, beginning at 6:30 Students will need to meet their teachers in the cafeteria by 6:15 for the performance Our first talent show will be on Friday, May 11th at 1:30pm put on by our third through fifth grade students and sponsored by Mrs Crews and Miss Hayen On May 15 th, we will have an opportunity for a drum circle in our poetry place More information will be coming home soon! These are just a few of the exciting things on tap for the remaining months of the year Please come out and get involved with us Our students and teachers continue to work very hard with all subjects and activities! There is a lot left to get accomplished this year and we can’t it without YOU! We will continue to involve your child in deep, rich learning experiences that will carry them into the next grade level, middle school and beyond I hope to see you at some of our activities! We continue to stress our character traits each day (be ready, respectful, responsible, and safe) Prior to break, many students were rewarded for their excellent behavior with gift certificates to our Shark Store! We have also had many Positive Office Referrals for fantastic behavior, especially with our guest teachers and for academic growth! Would your family like to borrow books to read as a family? Mrs Sutter and Mrs Ochiltree will be outside Sheridan School on Fridays from 2:45-3:30 with a cart of books for your family to check out All books will be due back the following Friday, you can then check out more for the following week Curbside Checkout will run every Friday April 6th through May 11th Please be considerate of those drivers doing pick up; park on a side street and walk to the checkout cart, so traffic is not congested Physical Education For Talented, Motivated Students with Financial Need! Your next step is individual lessons in your instrument: violin, viola, cello or piano through the Illinois Wesleyan University Preparatory Department These are weekly lessons plus recitals; the opportunity to advance in your instrument and in your study of music Pratt Music Foundation scholarships are awarded annually to talented, motivated, financially-qualified elementary and high school students (grades through 12) in Bloomington-Normal-McLean County Scholars attend the Illinois Wesleyan University Preparatory Music School and receive weekly individual lessons in piano or strings (violin, viola or cello) Scholarship applications can be downloaded from the site or all available by mail (call 309-827-5534) The application asks for basic information about the family and student Separate pages call for referrals by a music teacher and a knowledgeable adult other than a parent In addition, the student applicant answers several short essay questions The application includes details on income limits Tennis Shoe Reminder: Please be reminded that students are NOT to wear flip flops, dress shoes or any other type of shoe on P.E days– TENNIS SHOES ONLY Applications are due by June for consideration in mid-June by our selection committee Scholarship recipients are notified by letter and begin class in August Nonselected applicants are also notified by letter Bloomington Public Schools District 87 · Dr Barry Reilly, Superintendent Board of Education: James Almeda, Brigette Beasley, Elizabeth Fox Anvick, Tammy Houtzel, Charles Irwin, Mark Wylie & Mary Yount April 2018 Talent Show Calling all 4th and 5th grade students! Please consider auditioning for the Sheridan School Talent Show This year the show will be held on Friday, May 11th at 1:30 PM The dress rehearsal will be on Thursday (10th) afternoon at 1:30PM The following days are set for auditions: 4th Grade- April 25th 5th Grade- April 27th Please make sure you have all your music and materials with you at the time of the audition Thank you! Miss Hayen & Mrs Crews Being Ready for School Each Day Please help your child have a successful day at school by helping them out in the morning with: Face washed, hair combed and teeth brushed Clean clothes: shirt, pants socks and underwear Gym shoes and socks if child has gym class Glasses worn if they are prescribed Daily medication given before child leaves for school (ie Allergy meds, ADHD meds) Backpack sent with child to school and reviewed daily (papers, signed, homework done the night before) Child knows how they are getting home (any changes MUST be in writing, handed in that morning) Nurse School Policy for Picking up Sick Children from School Spring showers may bring spring flowers, but spring time is a time for illnesses such as colds, coughs, fevers, vomiting, and diarrhea to mention a few It is a parent/guardian’s responsibility to report their child’s absence to school if they are sick, and pick their child up from school as soon as possible when they are sick PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES TO KEEP EVERYONE SAFE AND HEALTHY: YOU are responsible for picking up your child and bringing them home The school is unable to put a sick child in a cab/taxi/bus to go home It is a parent/guardian’s responsibility to make arrangements to pick up their child when he/she is sick For parents who not drive or have a car please make arrangements with family or friends ahead of time on how to get a sick child home from school Please make sure the school has an updated working phone number as well as emergency phone numbers We can’t always foresee when our children get sick and may need to go home, but please know we are not only looking out for the best interest and well-being of your child, but your child’s classmates as well Children must remain out-of-school for 24 hours after fever, diarrhea, or vomiting Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns Nurse Holly Bloomington Public Schools District 87 · Dr Barry Reilly, Superintendent Board of Education: James Almeda, Brigette Beasley, Elizabeth Fox Anvick, Tammy Houtzel, Charles Irwin, Mark Wylie & Mary Yount April 2018 Mrs Woith’s 3rd Grade News Retired teachers, Mrs Fuller and Mrs Lorber, presented to third grade about their travels around the world Mrs Fuller shared about her trip to Liberia and taught us about the way of life there Mrs Lorber shared pictures and information about her visit to Antarctica Third graders compared what she shared to the story they read in class called “Trapped by the Ice” 3rd Grade Class The students in 3W had fun learning about force and motion! They participated in an engineering activity where they built bridges out of paper and did a slide activity where they learned about friction The kids thoroughly enjoyed these activities with Mrs Woith!
