Currently working on program for anyone that wants to teach ESL Having the ability to teach ESL is quite beneficial to secondary education students Please be sure to take informational rack cards available on table in back of the classroom Joe announced that the Education Department has developed an Education Minor that will go before the - Once approved, please mention Graduate Curriculum Committee next Friday After many discussions with faculty, it was mentioned that to your students that a new many secondary education students are pressed for time and have very tight programming schedules Education Minor will be offered Sometimes advisors are discouraging students from going into Education Came up with Education Minor that students can begin to take while here in other majors Joe mentioned that Rebecca Sesky has worked quite extensively on this new minor It will be an 18 credit minor and once finished with their bachelor’s degree the student can continue on to obtain their education certification or master’s already having credits Obtaining just an Educ Minor gives them more time to get content at the undergraduate level Rebecca stated that all of the courses in the Education Minor are existing/approved The student would not have to go through screening or block We are really pushing students to come back as an M.A.T student and they can earn their certification without obtaining the M.A.T It doesn’t interfere with the subject major and can be a tremendous value to other programs Joe mentioned that offering the Education Minor opens up the possibility for other students to come into the Education Dept Joe asked all in attendance if they have any issues or concerns about this before it goes to the Graduate Curriculum Committee Andrea Novak asked if these courses fall into required coursework for sophomore screening Rebecca Sesky answered that these courses are prior to screening Andrea asked if there are any substitutions for CSD students since they already field, the field requirement with the Education Minor would not be doable for CSD students with their schedules Joe stated that we can talk with specific departments about what they need in the 18 credits and is open to see how we can make it work for all departments Joe mentioned that there may be a way within the years that they can obtain the minor Rebecca asked if there is a possibility of students taking in an accelerated format, putting secondary methods courses in that block, can they run as week/5 week then come back for in the th year Chris Fryer suggested we could place students in the first 7/8 weeks and take classes then go out in the field Chris mentioned that the students still have assignments while in field Sr Frances Russell stated that students can still take liberal arts course in the evening Rebecca mentioned that it’s approved already at the Undergrad/Grad level Joe suggested when talking to students to first speak with them about getting the minor, then the certification and/or master’s degree Joe mentioned that he is forecasting the STEM program is a year out from now Alice Reyes mentioned that this is not offered for foreign language Rebecca stated that the Education Minor can be added to any major and is a particular benefit for the 7-12 area students Joe mentioned that the student could obtain 18 credits toward an Education degree but would not leave with a certification When speaking to students mention benefits of bachelors vs master’s degree Bernice Lukus stated that when schools are looking at prospective candidates to hire, they look for the most competent, highly qualified candidate., they’ll be required to obtain more credits once hired to teach Having a Master’s degree earns higher salary Ann Marie Castelgrande stated that once the student returns they’ll already have 18 credits under their belt to their benefit instead of taking all 30 credits Joe mentioned that he hopes this new Education Minor goes through to begin for fall semester The Education Department is looking for more diversity of students with other majors in our department this fall 2015 If you have any questions or any interested students please contact Dr Joseph Polizzi Please contact Joe with any feedback you receive IV Post Bac Programs Year Set Up vs Undergrad Programs V New PDE Student Teacher Assessment Tool Closing ADJOURNMENT Alice Reyes announced that her department has new minors She asked that when advising students, please have them take their language and contact the Foreign Language Department in their first year Please consider changing Religious Studies to sophomore year and take Language in the first year Sr Fran said she would definitely support that Alice wants to reach the students in their freshman year Joe and Chris mentioned that we can update our grid sheets Change all grids to reflect that language taken freshman year Alice confirmed the switch would be made on the grid sheets to show language to be taken in first year Chris replied yes, change will be made to Grid Sheets Linda Skierski mentioned that sometimes we don’t have the information in time and that’s why we don’t register them to take it the first semester Alice stated that she will make sure we have the information in time to register them for the first semester Joe asked everyone to take a look at the various grid sheets The year bachelors to masters programs were worked on and constructed over the past 15 months and about students are currently enrolled We are looking for enrollment numbers for the year programs to go up Chris mentioned that regarding the year certification program that students start taking same courses as other Elementary Education students so we try to put them in the grid when we see them being offered We try to list the courses on the grid sheet where we think they belong Once courses change we have to try to implement all of the changes, all grids will need to be changed to reflect new math course numbers Dr Chaogui Zhang stated that Math 120 is the only course that does not have a prerequisite Start students off with Math 120 first They restructured the course numbers so Math 120 is the lowest course offered now Chaogui Zhang stated the following changes: Math 115 is now Math 160, it is a more rigorous course Math 120 remains as 120, Math 110 is now Math 130, Math 115 is now Math 160, Math 216 is now Math 155 Chris asked Chaogui Zhang if he could please review the grid sheets, update with current math course numbers and send back to us The grid sheets will be updated over the summer He stated that students have to pass placement before they come in the fall and need to take a remedial course if they don’t pass or take remedial math course while taking Math 120 The remedial course will not count towards the core or graduation, but will count in tuition Chris asked that if anyone else sees any other courses running in the wrong semester, please let us know so we can make the changes so they run in the correct semester We need to know in advance if a student doesn’t want to go into the 5th year so they can finish with their B.S without certification The other year option is with triple certification Students can still graduate in years if they opt out of th year Some current freshmen want to move into the year program Andrea suggested to be very careful with number of 500 level courses because only 12 of those credits can count as an Undergrad Please be sure to take informational rack cards on year program and triple certification program available on table in back of classroom Joe announced that there is going to be a new PDE Student Teacher Assessment Tool that will be used coming down the pipeline The Education Dept is working on a new form for evaluation and assessment of students while in the field Once completed, the form will be sent to you Bernice explained that while attending the PACTE conference last week, that PACTE has drafted a proposal that will be going to PDE The Assessment Tool being proposed by PACTE looks good and includes work sample This new form will take place of the PDE 430 form PDE was pushing to have student teachers videotaped in schools and the schools against that Joe reminded all in attendance to please contact him and/or the Education Department if they ever have any questions, comments, concerns, etc Thank you for attending the meeting The meeting was adjourned at 12:55pm - - - - Please advise students to take language in their first year If you see any changes/revisions that need to be made to the Grid Sheets please notify the Educ Dept Grid Sheets will be updated to reflect new Math course numbers and other necessary revisions If you have students interested in one of the year programs, please notify the Educ Dept New PDE Student Teacher Assessment Tool will be distributed to all once finalized
