combination will help stabilize the vehicle Never increase speed without applying the brakes Avoid holding the brake pedal down too long or too frequently This could cause the brakes to overheat, resulting in reduced braking efficiency Do the following if the trailer begins to sway: Take your foot off the accelerator pedal to allow the vehicle to coast and steer as straight ahead as the road conditions allow This combination will help stabilize the vehicle Increase your following distance to allow for greater stopping distances while towing a trailer Anticipate stops and brake gradually Do not use cruise control while towing a trailer Some states or provinces have specific regulations and speed limits for vehicles that are towing trailers Obey the local speed limits — Do not correct trailer sway by steering or applying the brakes When the trailer sway stops, gently apply the brakes and pull to the side of the road in a safe area Try to rearrange the trailer load so it is balanced as described earlier in this section Be careful when passing other vehicles Passing while towing a trailer requires considerably more distance than normal passing Remember the length of the trailer must also pass the other vehicle before you can safely change lanes Down shift the transmission to a lower gear for engine braking when driving down steep or long hills This will help slow the vehicle Check your hitch, trailer wiring harness connections, and trailer wheel lug nuts after 50 miles (80 km) of travel and at every break When stopped in traffic for long periods of time in hot weather, put the vehicle in the P (Park) position Make sure you disconnect the trailer lights before backing the trailer into the water or the trailer lights may burn out FLAT TOWING Towing your vehicle with all four wheels on the ground is sometimes called flat towing This method is sometimes used when towing a vehicle behind a recreational vehicle, such as a motor home CAUTION Failure to follow these guidelines can result in severe transmission damage Whenever flat towing your vehicle, always tow forward, never backward DO NOT tow any continuously variable transmission vehicle with all four wheels on the ground (flat towing) Doing so WILL DAMAGE internal transmission parts due to lack of transmission lubrication DO NOT tow an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicle with any of the wheels on the ground Doing so When launching a boat, don’t allow the water level to go over the exhaust tail pipe or rear bumper When towing a trailer, the transmission fluid should be changed more frequently For TIRE QUALITY GRADING may cause serious and expensive damage to the powertrain For emergency towing procedures refer to “TOWING RECOMMENDED BY NISSAN” in the “6 In case of emergency” section of this manual Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) All-Wheel Drive (AWD) models: Do not tow an AWD vehicle with any of the wheels on the ground Two-Wheel Drive (2WD) models: To tow a vehicle equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), an appropriate vehicle dolly MUST be placed under the towed vehicle’s driving wheels Always follow the dolly manufacturer’s recommendations when using their product DOT (Department Of Transportation) Quality Grades: All passenger car tires must conform to federal safety requirements in addition to these grades Quality grades can be found where applicable on the tire sidewall between tread shoulder and maximum section width For example: WARNING The traction grade assigned to this tire is based on straight-ahead braking traction tests, and does not include acceleration, cornering, hydroplaning, or peak traction characteristics Treadwear 200 Traction AA Temperature A TREADWEAR The treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified government test course For example, a tire graded 150 would wear one and one-half (1 1/2) times as well on the government course as a tire graded 100 The relative performance of tires depends upon actual conditions of their use, however, and may depart significantly from the norm due to variations in driving habits, service practices and differences in road characteristics and climate TRACTION AA, A, B AND C The traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, B and C Those grades represent the tire’s ability to stop on wet pavement as measured under controlled conditions on specified government test surfaces of asphalt and concrete A tire marked C may have poor traction performance TEMPERATURE A, B AND C The temperature grades A (the highest), B, and C, representing the tire’s resistance to the generation of heat and its ability to dissipate heat when tested under controlled conditions on a specified indoor laboratory test wheel Sustained high temperature can cause the material of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure The grade C corresponds to a level of performance which all passenger car tires must meet under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No 109 Grades B and A represent higher levels of performance on the laboratory test wheel than the minimum required by law WARNING The temperature grade for this tire is established for a tire that is properly inflated and not overloaded Excessive speed, INSPECTION/ MAINTENANCE (I/M) TEST A vehicle equipped with All-Wheel Drive (AWD) should never be tested using a two wheel dynamometer (such as the dynamometers used by some states for emissions testing), or similar equipment Make sure you inform test facility personnel that your vehicle is equipped with AWD before it is placed on a dynamometer Using the wrong test equipment may result in transmission damage or unexpected vehicle movement which could result in serious vehicle damage or personal injury Due to legal requirements in some states/areas or provinces, your vehicle may be required to be in what is called the “ready condition” for an Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) test of the emission control system The vehicle is set to the “ready condition” when it is driven through certain driving patterns Usually, the “ready condition” can be obtained by ordinary usage of the vehicle If a powertrain system component is repaired or the battery is disconnected, the vehicle may be reset to a “not ready condition” Before taking the I/M test, check the vehicle’s inspection/ maintenance test readiness condition Turn the ignition switch to the ON position without starting the engine If the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) comes on steady for 20 seconds and then blinks for 10 seconds, the I/M test condition is “not ready” If the MIL does not blink after 20 seconds, the I/M test condition is “ready” Repeat steps and at least 10 times If the MIL indicates the vehicle is in a “not ready” condition, drive the vehicle through the following pattern to set the vehicle to the “ready condition” If you cannot or not want to perform the driving pattern, a NISSAN dealer can conduct it for you Accelerate the vehicle to 55 MPH (88 km/h) and maintain the speed for at least minutes WARNING Always drive the vehicle in a safe and prudent manner according to traffic conditions and obey all traffic laws Start the engine Allow the engine to idle until the engine coolant temperature gauge needle points between the C and H (normal operating temperature) Stop the vehicle Place the transmission selector lever in the P (Park) or N (Neutral) position Turn the engine off 10 Repeat steps through at least one more time If step through is interrupted, repeat the preceding step Any safe driving mode is acceptable between steps Do not stop the engine until step is completed Accelerate the vehicle to 55 MPH (88 km/h), then quickly release the accelerator pedal completely and keep it released for at least 10 seconds Quickly depress the accelerator pedal for a moment, then drive the vehicle at a speed of 53 to 60 MPH (86 to 96 km/h) for at least minutes Stop the vehicle Leave the engine running Accelerate the vehicle to 35 MPH (55 km/h) and maintain the speed for 20 equipped with an Event Data Recorder (EDR) The main purpose of an EDR is to record, in certain crash or near crash-like situations, such as an air bag deployment or hitting a road obstacle, data that will assist in understanding how a vehicle’s systems performed The EDR is designed to record data related to vehicle dynamics and safety systems for a short period of time, typically 30 seconds or less The EDR in this vehicle is designed to record such data as: How various systems in your vehicle were operating; Whether or not the driver and passenger safety belts were buckled/fastened; How far (if at all) the driver was depressing the accelerator and/or brake pedal; and, How fast the vehicle was traveling Sounds are not recorded These data can help provide a better understanding of the circumstances in which crashes and injuries occur NOTE: EDR data are recorded by your vehicle only if a nontrivial crash situation occurs; no data are recorded by the EDR under normal driving conditions and no personal data (e.g name, gender, age and crash location) are recorded However, other parties, such as law enforce- ment, could combine the EDR data with the type of personally identifying data routinely acquired during a crash investigation To read data recorded by an EDR, special equipment is required and access to the vehicle or the EDR is needed In addition to the vehicle manufacturer and NISSAN dealer, other parties, such as law enforcement, that have the special equipment, can read the information if they have access to the vehicle or the EDR EDR data will only be accessed with the consent of the vehicle owner or lessee or as otherwise required or permitted by law A genuine NISSAN Service Manual is the best source of service and repair information for
