Newsletter May 2013 Team based workplace giving - Small change Big difference Award Winners Tips for Success Top Tips – The majority of Award winners cited the following as key success factors:       Ask staff to vote for the benefiting charity Choose local charities where possible Change charities regularly to refresh the scheme and widen appeal Brief new joiners about the scheme as part of the induction process and include a sign up form when collecting salary bank details Run one big annual promotion campaign about the scheme Use any large face to face staff event to promote the scheme Some organisations have a high percentage of staff donating their payslip pennies to charity – why is this? What they that you don’t? In March 2013 Pennies from Heaven announced the winners of its annual Awards to celebrate the achievements of members demonstrating outstanding commitment and generosity We have asked our winners to tell us why the scheme has been so popular at their workplaces and share with us the key success factors We hope this newsletter inspires you and provides new ideas to promote the scheme Lifetime have been running the scheme since July 2011 and have 84% of staff participating in the scheme Jenny Collins Lifetime We are a growing company and find that catching employees when they are new to Lifetime is a really successful way to boost uptake so we promote Pennies from Heaven in our induction Our induction is interactive so it is first introduced as part of a quiz and then we give people the opportunity to sign up on the day We also raise awareness of the scheme at conferences etc by asking people to vote for the charities to support, which also encourages them to sign up In the past we’ve turned this into a competition so those that vote for the charity to support also have the opportunity to win a day’s annual leave ® Pennies from Heaven is a registered trademark No:2198517 May 2013 “A recent campaign increased sign up by 75%” “We made the process to sign up easy and the creative engaging and edible!” Staff and pensioners at Warwickshire County Council (WCC) have been donating their payslip pennies since November 2006 and have 30% of staff participating Sarah Antill WCC There are three key success factors we believe we have in place at Warwickshire: The scheme is mentioned at induction – this creates a high sign up WCC are generally very supportive of good causes and this is an extremely simple and straightforward way of raising money The choice of charity also is important as between them the Myton and Mary Ann Evans Hospices cover the entire county Shoosmiths have been running the scheme since June 2007 and have 27% of staff participating Nicola Ellen Shoosmiths We provide information about Pennies from Heaven on our intranet and in regular business briefings which always include a CR section We also publicise the amount raised PFH is described and forms handed out at our induction briefings and sign up forms are accessed from our intranet As with many of the corporate schemes we are involved in as an organisation the promotion around PFH is a rolling programme - we don't want staff to feel bombarded but there is push around the scheme at least once a year All staff can access PFH information and a sign up form from an external staff facing website We promoted the scheme in every office in August 2012 as an example of a pledge colleagues could sign up to and in January 2013 we encouraged colleagues to think about PFH as a New Year's Resolution Recently we ran an Intranet poll about PFH We plan to run the poll again at a later date to measure any improvement on the scores As our benefiting charity changes the scheme appeals to different individuals who have not signed up before We used our blog to publicise the gold Award we won in 2013 Did you know? HostelBookers.com have been running the scheme since September 2011 and have 34% of staff participating Alana Copeland Anne- Your employees can join the LaureDondina HostelBookers.com Pennies from Heaven is promoted by holding campaigns twice a year, as well as advertising in ourhandbooks and during new starter orientations We hold an annual survey so employees can choose which charity they would like to support This raises awareness and attracts more people to join Sign up forms are available on our intranet scheme online via the Pennies from Heaven website Ask us for details on how to set this up It is a great scheme as it allows our staff to donate to a charity they care about with no hassle at all! The pennies are simply deducted from their monthly salary, which is easy and stress free to administrate! Molins have been running PFH since September 2006 and have 18% of pensioners participating Sally Soper Molins UK Pension Fund The key communication we is we send all new pensioners a form for them to complete to join Pennies from Heaven On top of this we feature the scheme in our annual newsletter which is sent to all members ® Pennies from Heaven is a registered trademark No:2198517 May 2013 Staff at Capital One have been donating their payslip pennies since March 2006 and have 37% of staff participating Stuart Mather Capital One The most successful promotion we have run was when we made the process to sign up easy and the creative engaging and edible! We gave away a small bag of chocolate coins to every employee in the business The label that provided ingredients also doubled as the application for employees to sign up to the scheme This was backed up with an eye catching email We are looking to make PFH mandatory for staff! Whilst we work on that, we have started giving application forms to any new recruits to the business Sign up is very easy – staff send an email through to a dedicated mailbox providing a small amount of data and confirmation they'd like to be enrolled “The easier you make it for staff, the more chance is that they will sign up.” Staff and pensioners at The Bank of England have been donating their payslip pennies since August 2007 and have 40% of staff participating Julie Bigwood Bank of England Our key success factors: Staff like the fact there is a fixed amount you can donate (and not go above that) but it makes a big difference It is easy to sign up to Staff help choose the charities their pennies go to We had lots of promotions about the scheme at launch then since then we keep staff informed with regular updates such as articles on our intranet Any opportunity we get, we hand out forms eg at quiz nights, in restaurants we put forms on the tables We also have a section on the ‘new joiners’ payroll form We link our updates to the audit trails from PFH saying how much has been donated I think it makes staff realise just how much a few pennies each month can make a big difference Staff at B Braun Medical Limited have been donating their payslip pennies since April 2011 and have 28% of staff participating Joanne Palmer B Braun Medical Ltd “Did you know? Our key success factors: We have tried to make it as accessible as possible for employees We have asked staff to choose the charities each year We asked staff to choose a national & a local charity One of the most successful campaigns we have run was a promotion via email which enabled people to sign up via email We introduce the scheme to new joiners on their first day so people know about it straightway and many sign up immediately ® Pennies from Heaven is a registered trademark No:2198517 May 2013 We regularly post news stories on the Pennies from Heaven Facebook page which you can incorporate into staff updates and internal news stories.” Staff at the Motor Insurers Bureau have been donating their payslip pennies since June 2009 and have 44% of staff participating Natalie Lepper MIB Group The PFH scheme is successful because it offers such a practical and easy way to give and signing up is made easy particularly for new starters – it’s because it involves regularly donating small amounts rather than one large amount We mainly promote the scheme by making new starters aware of it on their induction day Promoting it at this point is successful because it forms part of the induction and some may feel more immediately part of the organisation We also use our internal magazine to update staff on the scheme LV= have been running the scheme since November 2011 and have 21% of staff participating in the scheme A recent campaign increased sign up by 75% Daniel Francis LV= We recently ran a roadshow in all our offices, usually set up in the staff restaurants All managers across the business were tasked with bringing their team to the roadshow and 50% of staff attended Everyone manning the roadshow was tasked signing people up to Pennies from Heaven and they were able to give out a small bag of chocolate pennies for anyone who signed up on the spot We increased PFH participation by 75%! I also think the fact that each local office votes for and supports their own charity enhances the appeal of the scheme Barclays was the founding member of the Pennies from Heaven scheme starting in 2000 31% of staff participate in the scheme along with many pensioners Sitara Arpin Barclays Why is Pennies from Heaven successful? The application process is extremely straightforward, the minimal administration is appealing to the thousands of people who take part and with deductions never exceeding 99p, it is a small commitment on our employees part Our most successful campaign was in 2011 when Barclays’ UK Retail Bank ran a focused campaign with PFH materials sent to each Barclays region Each branch leader discussed PFH in their daily team huddles The promotion resulted in a c.20% increase in PFH participation This success was mainly attributed to introducing competition between the regions, focused communications and the measurement of results Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust joined the scheme in April 2007 and has 9% of staff participating Sue White Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust We change charity annually which staff vote for We then a promotion when the new charity comes on board highlighting amounts raised for the charity the previous year, and we have a banner on the Home Intranet page advertising PFH with a sign up button link PFH is featured within our HR presence on the Intranet, and has its own page which is linked to from various HR points PFH is also mentioned on the NNUH web page for staff so they can sign up from home Most of our capture comes from highlighting the scheme to new employees Recruitment send out easy sign up slips with confirmation of employment letters, and the Bank Office also hand out forms There are two induction training days a month, and sign up slips are given out with other new staff handouts There is also a slide in the powerpoint presentation at Induction How can I get more information? www.penniesfromheaven.co.uk Anthony Law / Kate Frost 01485 210698 a.law@penniesfromheaven.co.uk / kate@penniesfromheaven.co.uk ...
