Expansion and Enhancement of Medical School Curriculum to Increase Physicians in Underserved Oklahoma Sites Medical Student Education Program The University of Oklahoma, College of Medicine, 800 Stanton L Young, Blvd., AAT Suite 4000, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73126-0901 Co-Project Director: James Herman, MD, MSPH; Phone: 918-660-3077; Fax: 918-660-3090, jamesherman@ouhsc.edu; http://www.ou.edu/tulsa/community_medicine Co-Project Director: Steven Crawford, MD; Phone: 405-271-8000, ext.32124; Fax: 405-271-4784, steven-crawford@ouhsc.edu; https://www.oumedicine.com/college-of-medicine Number of Medical Student Trainees: 660/year Period of Performance: 9/1/19 – 8/31/23 Tribal Partners: Muskogee (Creek) Nation, Comanche Nation; FQHC: Variety Care; Rural and Urban Health System: Hillcrest Healthcare System; State Medical Workforce: Oklahoma Physician Manpower Training Commission, Oklahoma State Medical Association; Community-Based Organization: George Kaiser Family Foundation The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine (OU) is submitting an “Expansion and Enhancement of Medical School Curriculum to Increase Physicians in Underserved Oklahoma Sites” to create the Primary Care Pathways to Sustainable Health and Healthcare Network OU aims to develop this Primary Care Pathways Network to identify and mentor students from tribal, rural, and medically underserved communities in Oklahoma (TRU-OK) beginning K-12 through medical school This pathway will prepare OU medical students through a cohesive trajectory of enhanced curricula featuring interprofessional, team-based educational experiences in TRU-OK sites OU will augment how we identify and nurture career interests in primary care, and develop future physicians knowledgeable and empowered to deliver high quality, transformative primary care to meet the needs of TRU-OK communities OU will leverage our strengths in outreach and recruitment of tribal youth, community medicine education and community engagement, and network capacity building to develop a robust Primary Care Pathways Network This network will enable OU to create a pipeline starting with mentored youth transitioning to medical school then ultimately residency and primary care practice in TRU-OK This will foster a self-sustaining pipeline with future physician mentors who then nurture interests in the next cadre of youth in primary care careers in their communities GOAL 1: Recruit, admit, and retain TRU-OK students in collaboration with key partners in TRU-OK by expanding K-12 outreach to underrepresented groups in medicine, extending college recruitment, and developing retention programs for medical students from TRU-OK GOAL 2: In collaboration with strategic statewide partners, create innovative and early educational experiences for all medical students featuring authentic, interprofessional team-based experiences in community-based settings to prepare them for residencies and careers in TRU-OK primary care GOAL 3: Support the Primary Care Pathways Network by adequately preparing and resourcing the infrastructure that promotes pipelining in TRU-OK communities through expanding and extending robust professional development programs and building Network infrastructure Grant funded activities are supported by executive leadership and led by multidisciplinary senior faculty The activities are co-developed with engaged strategic partners with aligned missions, shared resources, and demonstrable collaborative histories; including clinical systems, population health, health information systems, and research OU are applying for two funding priorities on the basis of federally-recognized tribes and public-private partnerships
