will be responsible for your progression and welfare at college You will meet with your tutor and tutor group each week and follow an active programme which aims to support your studies and prepare you for your next step on to university or high level apprenticeship or employment We will provide academic support through our Inclusion Coordinator for dealing with the development of communication, numeracy, ICT skills, English for speakers of other languages and other educational needs Parents are informed through regular reports and access to an online portal where subject performance is continually monitored through college wide common assessment points All students interested in progressing to university are offered the chance to attend Open Days for universities, from residential visits to Oxford and Cambridge, trips to Russell Group institutions to taster sessions at local institutions such as Teesside University and University of Sunderland We employ a college counsellor for a wide range of work experience placements Focused Friday Our unique four day teaching timetable makes us different from the other providers You will benefit from a condensed timetable in which lessons take place from Monday to Thursday “Focused Friday” as we call it, is a day for anything and everything but lessons From catching up to extending your knowledge, you are welcome to come into college on a Friday and study at your own pace Focused Friday enables students to engage in a range of opportunities including Work Experience, First Aid Courses, Accredited British Sign Language Qualifications as well as the opportunity to become part of our Student Council You can also access activities and workshops that allow you to acquire new life skills and gain that all important Students get the chance to spend a month in Lisbon (Portugal’s capital city), participating in an exciting internship Learn Portuguese at the same time, and on your days off, explore the beautiful ‘city of light’ The programme is EU funded and flights, accommodation and food are provided free of charge This will look great on your CV or on job/university applications The college has successfully run this project for the last 10 years and students participating in it have had an amazing experience each and every time 2019/20 PROSPECTUS Erasmus KA2 Take part in an exciting Europe wide project, meeting and working with students from many different European countries Over the last three years students from Stockton have visited Malta, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, France and Romania All trips abroad are fully funded by the EU Highlights from the last three years include performing a play in a theatre in Malta, taking a stall promoting local food based tourism to trade fairs in Germany, Slovakia and France and helping students of all ages and from many different countries learn English in Romania FREE Fitness FREE use of the college multi-gym and its equipment; including treadmill, bike, stepper, resistance weights, jump mats and an abs machine FREE WIFI FREE use of the college WIFI Food and drink The college subsidises food and drink on site so you can take advantage of healthy meals and snacks From September 2018 students will be able to take full advantage of our brand new on-site Costa Coffee facilities Bursary £10 weekly* cash allowance for students who qualify for a bursary *Average payment to students in 2016/17 academic year Payments vary depending on number of students applying to the scheme and cannot be guaranteed stocktonsfc.ac.uk ART & DESIGN FINE ART A LEVEL • • • Students who study Art and Design as an additional qualification Students who study Art and Design as a means of continuing onto further/higher education Students who it for the love of the subject These categories are not necessarily mutually exclusive, but they define the motivation of the student However, most Art and Design students want to study a practical, ‘hands-on’ course that is engaging, imaginative and creative What does the A Level Art and Design Fine Art course consist of? Year One: Portrait project (Art as process vs Art as narrative) and a mock exam (acting as an additional project) Year Two: Personal study and externally set assignment/exam 10 2019/20 PROSPECTUS • Developing a deeper appreciation of art practice through contextual studies (research into artists and art movements - placing work in a theoretical socio-political framework) • Developing a sophisticated understanding of media processes and techniques (increasing skills focussing on drawing, painting and printing, but this could also include photography, sculpture and installation) • AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and demonstrates understanding of visual language (PERSONAL) How is this course assessed? There are four Assessment Objectives, each one is equally weighted and must be addressed: What might this course lead on to? • Progression to Art College or University (foundation, degree and masters level) • Careers in art related fields – Fine Art, illustration, advertising or teaching • Gallery work (curation, conservation and sales) • AO1: Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources (RESEARCH) • AO2: Refine work by exploring ideas, selecting and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes (EXPERIMENTATION) • AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses (RECORDING/REFINING) Students use the extended projects to produce a portfolio of work addressing each assessment objectives equally and finally they complete an externally set assignment/exam (these two components are worth 50% each of the overall A Level grade) “ I chose to come to Stockton sixth form because the idea of a Friday free to catch up on work, some extracurricular activities and seek help from teachers was really appealing to me Another thing I like about this Sixth Form in particular is the size of the college Everyone knows everyone, including the teachers Teachers get the opportunity to know us students more personally and this makes them much more effective in their teaching, as well as making them much more approachable when seeking any kind of advice or assistance Christine Uchendu English Martyrs School Studying: Art & Design, Biology & Chemistry “ Why study Art and Design? • Investigating and evaluating real-world business issues: - How can a manager motivate a workforce? - How can a new business establish itself in the market? - What is business efficiency? - How firms promote their products? - Why did Nissan come to the North East? - Topics covered; leadership, marketing, finance, human resources, operations and the external environment How is this course assessed? • By examination What might this course lead on to? • I want to study a business course which places a great deal of emphasis on coursework • I want to set up and run my own business • I want the opportunity to enter employment in the business sector • I want the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, person skill and attributes essential for successful performance in working life What does the course consist of? • BTEC Business has a practical nature and there is a strong emphasis on the development of investigation skills and use of IT • You will also complete an examination as part of the course based on Business Environment • The course is a four-unit single award over two years (Extended Certificate) Units covered are: - Exploring business - Developing a marketing campaign - Personal and business finance - Investigating customer service How is this course assessed? • By a combination of coursework and examinations What might this course lead on to? • Higher education • Employment – this course enables you to develop abilities and skills in areas which employers have identified as being highly desirable • Self-employment • Apprenticeships in Accounting or Business Administration Why study Economics? • I want to study a dynamic and exciting subject of importance to everybody in society •  I want to investigate the best way of using limited resources efficiently • I want to find out about economic issues that affect all of our lives • I want to develop analytical and problem-solving skills   What does the course consist of? • Investigating core economic models and concepts across four main themes: - An introduction to markets and market failure - The UK economy – performance and policie - Business behaviour and the labour market - Global economic perspectives • Investigating key issues such as: - Market forces: Why are house prices so high in London? - The state: Why are there always waiting lists in the NHS? - Unemployment: Why is it so high in North East England - Climate Change: What can Economics offer to the debate? •  You will have the opportunity to take part in a departmental trips such as an Economics Grade Booster conference in Leeds   How is this course assessed? • I want to learn computer programming skills • I want to understand how to design and test computer programmes • I want to gain the mathematical insight into how a computer works on the inside What does the course consist of? • Decomposing problems and designing algorithms to provide solutions • Building software using a variety of programming languages and techniques • Examining and understanding hardware and software • Understanding how computers use mathematics to store and process instructions and data • Understanding the technicalities of networks, including the internet • Legislation, ethical, moral and cultural issues surrounding computer science How is this course assessed? • By examination and through a small coursework element What might this course lead on to? • Computer Science supports a wide range of careers and university courses including; Computer Science, Software Design, Business, Games and App Programming 14 2019/20 PROSPECTUS Why study IT? • I want to learn how to use a wide variety of software packages including graphics, sound & video editing, developing websites and multimedia and also to build and upgrade a computer system • I am interested in finding out about how ICT influences the world around me • I like to learn in a practical way and prefer coursework to written exams What does the course consist of? • I am interested in architecture, design, construction or engineering • I want to develop my practical skills while studying the theory behind construction What does the course consist of? Our Level BTEC Construction course is the ideal choice for students wishing to progress onto university to study architecture, construction or engineering or for those wishing to progress on to an apprenticeship in the sector at the end of their studies The course units cover all aspects and fields of construction engineering; you will study a wide range of units in year and year These will provide a broad experience and deep understanding of a variety of topics, including: • • • • • • Our Level BTEC Construction course is the ideal choice for students wishing to progress onto university to study architecture, construction or engineering or for those wishing to move into an apprenticeship in the sector at the end of their studies Construction Principles Building Surveying Construction Design Health and Safety in Construction Graphical Detailing in Construction (CAD and Manual Techniques) Building Regulations and Control in Construction How is this course assessed? • The majority of work will be coursework • You will take exam during the first year What might this course lead on to? There are three components: two examined topics and a coursework topic: • The Tudors: England 1485-1603 (examined): the reigns of Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I; change and continuity in government, religion and ideas, society and economy, foreign relationships and royal authority • America – A Nation Divided, 1845-1877 (examined): the origins of the American Civil War, the course of the war itself and the beginnings of the civil rights movement; an opportunity to study a period of history in depth • Russia, 1855-1964 (coursework): you will carry out independent research in order to answer a question about this period of Russian history “ I chose Stockton Sixth Form as it had a broad choice of courses that allowed me to choose the ones that were best for me The teachers were supportive and helped me every step of the way Niamh Arthur OSLB Studying: Biology, Chemistry & History “ Why study History? • It will give me an insight into the incredible variety of ways in which people have lived in the past • It can teach me how to argue convincingly and how to spot the weaknesses in other people’s arguments • I have an interest in the past and a willingness to find out more • I will learn how to carry out research and extract information from a variety of primary and secondary sources How is this course assessed? • By examination and through one piece of coursework • Each examined component is worth 40% of the final A Level, whilst the coursework is worth 20% What might this course lead on to? • History is a well-regarded qualification which can lead to many university degrees in addition to History It is particularly useful as a preparation for careers which require you to think critically, such as law, management and journalism 24 2019/20 PROSPECTUS stocktonsfc.ac.uk 25 Law & Politics GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS LAW Level Applied Diploma A Level A Level Why study Criminology? • I am thinking of studying other related humanities subjects, such as psychology, law and sociology • I am interested in learning more about the criminal justice system in UK • I want to develop a range of transferable skills for my future career, including oral and written communication skills, the ability to solve problems, provide skills of project-based research, development and presentation Why study Government and Politics? • I have an interest in current affairs and what is going on in the world • I am interested in how decisions that affect me are made by government • I want to know how I can participate in political decisions • I am interested in studying Politics or Law at university, or want a course that develops lots of skills for work in fields such as journalism and policing What does the course consist of? • Criminology is about crime and punishment It is an exciting interdisciplinary subject that draws on law, psychology and sociology to examine how crime is defined, why people commit crimes, the perceptions of crime and why some crimes are unreported and how society responds Unit 1: Changing awareness of crime Unit 2: Criminological theories Unit 3: Crime scene to courtroom Unit 4: Crime and punishment What does the course consist of? UK Politics: • Democracy and participation, political parties, electoral systems, voting behaviour and the media • Political ideas, including: conservatism, liberalism, socialism, anarchism UK Government: • The constitution, parliament, Prime Minister and executive, relationships between the branches Comparative politics - The USA: • The US Constitution and federalism, US Congress, US presidency, US Supreme Court and civil rights, democracy and participation, comparative theories How is this course assessed? • Two external exams (Units and 4) and two hour controlled assessments (Units and 3) • Graded A*-E What might this course lead on to? • Study of psychology, law, sociology or other humanities based subjects at university • The course will develop a wide range of skills and knowledge relevant to many job roles within the criminal justice sector, social and probation work 26 2019/20 PROSPECTUS How is this course assessed? • By examination Why study Law? • I am thinking of a career in the legal profession • I am interested in learning more about things I have seen on TV or in the news about crime • I am interested in examining actual cases that have been through the courts • I want to experience contact with the legal profession What does the course consist of? • Practical information about how the courts are structured • Learning about the powers of the police, the role of judges and how laws are made • Learning how to identify offences and why some cases go to court and others not • Examining issues like; what is murder and what is manslaughter? Why is 90% of crime in the UK drug-related?
