The
Masters of Cinema
Series
London, England
Founded in 2004, TheMastersofCinema Series is an
independent, carefully curated, UK-based Blu-ray and
DVD label consisting of over 150 films. From established
cornerstones such as Murnau’s SUNRISE, Mizoguchi’s
UGETSU MONOGATARI, Lang’s METROPOLIS, Welles’ TOUCH OF
EVIL, and Antonioni’s LA NOTTE – to revelatory rediscoveries
such as Epstein’s CŒUR FIDÈLE, Watkins’ EDVARD MUNCH,
and McCarey’s MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW – we believe all
are equally deserving of a larger audience.
THE DISCS.
Films are presented in their original aspect
ratio (OAR), in meticulous transfers created from recent
restorations and / or the most pristine film elements
available to us. The feature presentations are frequently
supplemented by short films, documentaries,
commentary tracks, deleted scenes, trailers, plus new
and vintage interview footage. In November 2008, we
were one ofthe first labels to push more unusual titles
onto Blu-ray, and this format is now our main focus.
THE BOOKLETS.
Each release is accompanied by a
substantial booklet or book. Alongside rare imagery are
newly commissioned essays and / or classic writings
that take the reader further into the process ofthe films
and the personalities ofthe filmmakers.

OUR TEAM. We lavish a lot of attention and energy on
our editions, born from our enthusiasm for, our love of,
and our allegiance to the cinema. We’re very lucky that
many of our supporters confidently ‘blind buy’ our new
releases safe in the knowledge that we care about each
film’s presentation as much as they do.

Pier Paolo Pasolini (seated) and crew, filming THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW (1962)
Blu-ray 2011
Blu-ray Q1 2012
Why
?
The above three factors result in Blu-ray
being the most immersive and faithful
representation of “the cinema experience”
currently available in the home today
(outside of a costly 35mm projector).
Unfortunately, the industry has poorly
explained and demonstrated the technology,
sowing confusion and giving the impression
that Blu-ray is not enough of a worthwhile
upgrade from DVD.
When compared with an actual 35mm frame,
the DVD format – now well into its second
decade as the world’s favourite film-holding
receptacle – is akin to a Polaroid of an oil
painting. Watchable, but capable of being far
surpassed.
Blu-ray is the first home format to adequately
represent the depth and texture of celluloid –
and we find it entrancing
The quest for resolution
The ongoing technology race has been
about maximising resolution and minimising
compression – whilst remaining affordable.
35mm film is widely regarded as being
entirely captured by a 4k film scan (see
opposite). As soon as uncompressed 4k
masters are available for home screening,
this race will noticeably plateau, because
the majority of films in the world have been
shot on 35mm and nothing better than 4k
would be required (ignoring all the futuristic
5k–12k+, 3D, and holographic shenanigans).
Until a few years ago, most films were
telecined (that is, transferred from their native
celluloid state to a video format) in SD to
be displayed on SD TV or released on NTSC
or PAL DVD (also SD). When HD arrived,
these telecines had to be replaced by much
higher resolution scans (2k or 4k). The scale
diagrams opposite give the clearest sense of
the relationships between all these formats,
and the quest to attain optimal resolution.
1.) Five times more image resolution than standard definition DVD + bitrates
much higher than commonly offered downloadable content = an image
far closer to the quality and texture of 35mm in the cinema.
2.) Audio is uncompressed, rich, and dynamic (lossless 192kHz / 24bit).
3.) 24 frames per second progressive imagery, like most 35mm films.
No PAL speedup to 25fps, interlacing, or NTSC video frame rates.
NTSC 720 x 480 (American TV / NTSC DVD)
PAL 768 x 576 (European TV / PAL DVD)
1080p 1920 x 1080 HD TV / Blu-ray
2k Digital cinema / Film scans
4k Holy grail!
