Business Administration – International Business Secretary’s Ofce Liane Jeschke Phone. +49.751.18999.2781 Fax. +49.751.18999.2702 jeschke@dhbw-ravensburg.de Your benet – good reasons for studying International Business Over the last few years the wide-ranging International Business course (IB) has developed very quickly in response to the many challenges posed by glo- balisation. German industrial and service companies are increasingly active on international markets and therefore need exible, highly motivated and above all internationally trained personnel. Expertise is especially sought in the following areas: – International Marketing – Export techniques and Financing – Opening up and adapting foreign markets – International Law The International Business course attempts to do justice to these deve- lopments. The comprehensive studies offered in Business Administration include gaining a knowledge of international business, foreign languages, intercultural skills and international project work At the heart of business life, not in the ivory tower The International Business course equips students with a grounding in the traditional basics of Business Administration such as Financing, Marketing, Cost Accounting and Ba- lancing. In addition lectures and seminars are offered on the more specialised areas of International Business and Cultural Management Lectures and seminars on International Business deal with business topics from an inter- national perspective. “To see clearly, often all you need to do is look in a different direc- tion”, Antoine de St. Exupéry already said. Especial emphasis is placed on International Marketing as well as on innovative Information and Communication Technologies. Lectures and seminars on Cultural Management deal with topics such as Values and their Marketing Relevance (Purchasing and Sales), Working in International Teams, Negotiation Techniques in Selected Cultures, as well as Intercultural Skills in Selected Purchasing and Export Markets. Teaching is held in English and German. Classes on Business English enrich the offer. All students choose Spanish or French as an obligatory subject, and they can study a further foreign language as an elective. International Business – global exibility on a rm foundation The course has good reason to call itself International Business. Not least because of opportunities to work and study abroad, IB studies are distinctly international in orientation. Studying abroad The DHBW Ravensburg has established numerous cooperation schemes with universities abroad. Students of International Busi- ness in particular can spend a study semester in a foreign country, thus guaranteeing additional international orientation. Qualica- tions obtained abroad are generally recognised as equivalent to those available in Ravensburg. Recognised study semesters can be spent in: USA, UK, France, Spain, Denmark, Finland, South Africa, Australia and South America Working abroad In the International Business course, one of the practical training phases is normally spent doing an internship abroad. Experience shows that an internship abroad in a subsidiary or with represen- tatives, customers or suppliers of the training enterprise decisively enhances the quality of the students’ learning experience. * CP Credit Points Modules are depicted in a grid Dissertation Investigation and treatment of a topic related to practice using scientic research methods 12 Total Contact Hours Theory 1783 210 Contact Hours 650 598 504 Group of Modules 1 st Academic Year 2 nd Academic Year 3 rd Academic Year CP* Practicals in Company Practical Module I Mangerial Performance Financing and Accounting/ Controlling Practical Module II Specialisation Function and Prole Areas Practical Module III 60 Economics Introduction to Microeconomics I Microeconomics II Macroeconomics Money and Currencies Economic Policy I Economic Policy II Social Insurance Distribution Policy 12 Law Introduction to the Legal System, Methodology, BGB General Section, BGB Law of Obli- gations General Section BGB Law of Obligations Special Section, BGB Property Law, Civil Procedures Act Commercial Law, Company Law Labour Law, Insolvency Law 8 General Business Science (G-BS) Basics of Business Administration Marketing Cost and Results Accounting I Services and Production Balancing (Accounting) Corporate Taxation Investment and Financing Organization and Project Management Human Resource Management Leadership Business Management Integrative Mana- gement Systems 33 Balance Sheet Analysis Consolidated Balance Sheet Financial Management 81 General Study Contents Marketing and Sales Human Resource Management and Organization Methods in Financial Accounting Methods in Financial Accounting I Methods in Financial Accounting II 4 Mathematics and Statistics Mathematics for Business Engineers Statistics 5 Information Technology Basics of Informati- on Technology Communication, Networks 4 Academic Work Introduction to Academic Work Theory of Science and Academic Work 3 Languages and/or Applied Theory Business/Commer- cial English I Business/Commer- cial English I Business/Commer- cial English II Business/Commer- cial English II Business/Commer- cial English III Business/Commer- cial English III 12 Specic Study Content Business Administration – International Business 57 Specic Business Science (S-BS) Mandatory Modules 1 st Academic Year Mandatory Modules 2 nd Academic Year Mandatory Modules 3 rd Academic Year 18 International Business Admini- stration I Basics of International Business International Logistics and Production International Marketing International Financing and Accounting Corporate Governance Structures Management in International Companies International Business Admini- stration II International Marketing I International Marketing II Mandatory Modules 1 st Academic Year Mandatory Modules 2 nd Academic Year Prole Mandatory Modules 3 rd Academic Year Prole I Intercultural Management I (Basics) Intercultural Management II (International Locations) Intercultural Management III (Crosscultural Competence) Intercultural Management IV (Crosscultural Competence) Intercultural Management V (International Organization) Intercultural Management VI (International Organization) 17 Prole II Spanish I Spanish I Spanish II Spanish II Spanish III 12Spanish III 10 Project work Within the International Business course, projects with partner enterprises form an integral part of the obligatory study program. This holds true especially for selected lectures and seminars in Interultural Management. Here particular importance is attached to interdisciplinary and international aptitudes as well as soft skills. The obligatory program includes classes on communication and negotiation skills, as well as on moderation and presentation techniques. Specic Study Content Business Administration – International Business Admissions requirements To enrol at the university students must be in possession of an employment contract. In addition they need an appropriate university entrance quali- cation. Study fees, like at all state universities in Baden-Wuerttemberg, are 500 Euros per semester. The Dual Concept The phases of academic study and workplace training alternate in regu- lar three-monthly intervals, ensuring both pace and variety throughout the program. Course contents are closely coordinated. Courses are taught by professors at the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University, visiting lecturers from other universities and colleges, freelance trainers, consultants and executives, who contribute cutting-edge knowledge and expertise from their professional elds. This ensures a high academic level as well as practice-orientated teaching. Small classes of no more than 30 students guarantee close supervision, creating conditions that encourage motivation and pay an essential part in contributing to successful out- comes. Students receive a monthly salary from their employer throughout their study period and have the insurance status of employees. All degree programmes at the Cooperative State University take three years and start on 1st of October. Graduation Students who successfully graduate from the International Business course obtain a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. The degree is accredited with 210 Credit Points and entitles graduates to embark on further studies at Master’s level (Master of Arts or Master of Science). Application Applications should be submitted via a partner enterprise which cooperates with the International Business Course at the DHBW Ravensburg. Applicants may also suggest a company that is willing to sign an employment contract with them. A list of companies can be found on the Course homepage. Graduates in International Business – successful and efcient If you are seeking to appoint qualied new personnel, then graduates in International Business are exactly the right choice for your company. Gradu- ates in IB are highly exible and adaptable. A high point of their education and training takes place abroad: there the students do a practical internship or study for a semester. Often they have taken part in foreign exchanges, and they have experience in English especially. Communication skills are paramount in this subject area. Also essential are analytical skills, a high level of commitment, network thinking skills, a willingness to take part in teamwork, as well as geographical and cultural exibility. Graduates are suited to very varied kinds of work. They are in demand in every eld where customer contact plays a major role. Typical professio- nal areas are: Foreign marketing and distribution, Product management, Purchasing and logistics, HR, Project management, Quality management. The professional prospects are excellent: roughly 90% of the students sign employment contracts with the companies after graduation.
