Robyn Lebron Š‡ ƒ•ƒ ”ƒ–Š (or The Book of the Tenth Master) is an eighteenth-century collection of miscellaneous works generally attributed to Gobind Singh The teachings of Gobind Singh were not included in Gurū Granth Sāhib, the holy book of the Sikhs, and instead were collected in the Dasam Granth Unlike the Gurū Granth Sāhib, the Dasam Granth was never declared to hold guruship The authenticity of some portions of the Granth has been questioned, and the appropriateness of the Granth’s content still causes much debate.15 Basic Worship Service Sikhs worship God and only God Unlike members of many other religions, they worship God in his true abstract form and don’t use images or statues to help them Although the Sikh God is beyond description, Sikhs feel able to pray to God as a person and a friend who cares for them Sikhs regard prayer as a way of spending time in company with God For prayer to be really effective, a person tries to empty themselves of everything of this world so that they can perceive God Although Sikhs can worship on their own, they see congregational worship as having its own special merits Sikhs believe that God is visible in the Sikh congregation or •ƒ‰ƒ– and that God is pleased by the act of serving the congregation Sikh aims to get up early, bathe, and then start the day by meditating on God The Sikh code of conduct lays down a stern discipline for the start of the day: a Sikh should wake up in the ambrosial hours (three hours before the dawn), take a bath and, concentrating his/her thoughts on One Immortal Being, repeat the name ƒŠ‡ ‰—”— (wondrous destroyer of darkness) There are set prayers that a Sikh should recite in the morning and evening and before going to sleep.16 The place where Sikhs gather to worship is called a —”—†™ƒ”ƒ, (meaning the doorway to God) This relates to the fact that it is the home of a copy of the Gurū Granth Sāhib, the holy book of the Sikhs which has the status of being a “living Guru” and is treated with great reverence and it is housed in a special canopied and cushioned throne, covered with decorated cloths to keep it clean
