Robyn Lebron Judgment and Salvation Most TAR teach that God has made covenants with humans on several occasions The breaking of those covenants is what has caused The Great One to be so distant from humans There are some parallels in this relationship to redemption.37 The threat to life both physical and spiritual is the premise of the quest for salvation The threat is so near and real because, for the African, life is (intertwined with everything around us) and is constantly under threat from evil forces This logic of the relationality of being and cosmic life gives rise to the view that all reality is inter-related like a family.38 No one can attain ancestral status without having led a morally good life, according to traditional African moral standards For an ancestor is regarded as a model or exemplar of conduct in the community, and as a source of tribal tradition and its stability In some tribes, proper burial with appropriate funeral rites is another necessary condition for the soul to pass into the ancestral mode of existence Special Doctrine The African village…has a strong sense of community Neighbors co-operate in a thousand ways, working communally on each other’s farms, taking part in each other’s expeditions for hunting or fishing, celebrating each other’s family and social events Neighbors borrow tools and utensils from each other, and perform innumerable services for each other For many African peoples the ideal of the good life is sharing good company Neighbors come together not only for work and recreation, but also to solve disputes The neighborhood court plays an invaluable role in reconciling disputants, in settling quarrels and in imposing sanctions The court operates on the basis of a thorough interest in maintaining peace and harmony among neighbors and villagers A local chief or headman might be responsible for the final decision taken, but it would have to reflect the opinions voiced in the free discussion which had preceded it.39 Throughout traditional Africa, there are no codes of positive law, and society did not make laws in any literal sense Decisions concerning
