Robyn Lebron On May of 2004, David Miscavige announced the “ ,” a church program intended to make all Scientology materials available It started with the release of eighteen congresses The new head of the church also began the process of revising all books and lectures In July 2007, a re-release of all of Hubbard’s basic books and tape recordings on Dianetics and Scientology was announced The announcement was made in a speech given by David Miscavige at the Flag Land Base In an almost three hour briefing he claimed that many errors had been found in previous versions of the books, and that a large-scale project was undertaken to locate the original Dictaphone recordings and annotated transcriptions of the books and restore each work to its original, pure form.11 The latest edition of the organization’s publication, What Is Scientology?, lists 373 churches and missions (plus hundreds of related organizations, which are not directly comparable to congregations) in 163 countries In 2007, a church official claimed 3.5 million members in the United States But Adherents.com estimates there are less than 750,000 continuing members In 2008, the American Religious Identification Survey estimated that there are only 25,000 active members in the United States The actual membership of the Church of Scientology is difficult to assess Scientologists tend to disparage general religious surveys on the grounds that many members maintain cultural and social ties to other religious groups and will, when asked their religion, answer with their traditional and more socially acceptable affiliation to prevent ridicule There are others who have not converted from their original faith and feel that Scientology has increased their awareness of the spiritual nature of man and the religious life in general so they feel comfortable with both and believe that their two faiths enhance each other ~ 402 ~
