Animal Sexual Assault 85 Dr Jennifer Maher is Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Criminology, University of South Wales Her research interests include animal abuse, green criminology, human-animal studies, and youth and gang violence She recently concluded a UK wildlife trafficking study for the FP7 (European Commission) EFFACE project which evaluated the impact of environmental crime in Europe and is currently researching puppy smuggling for the Scottish and English Governments Her publications include co-editing Greening Criminology in the 21st Century (2016, Routledge, with M Hall et al.) and the special journal issue ‘Animal Abuse and Criminology’ in Crime, Law and Social Change (2011 with P Beirne) Professor Piers Beirne has taught sociology, law and criminology in England, Ireland and the USA, where he is currently Professor of Sociology and Legal Studies in the Department of Criminology at the University of Southern Maine Among my books are Hogarth’s Art of Animal Cruelty (2015, Palgrave Macmilan); Criminology: A Sociological Approach (2015, with James W Messerschmidt, Oxford University Press, 6th edition) and Confronting Animal Abuse (2009, Rowman & Littlefield) Recently edited books include Issues in Green Criminology (2007, with Nigel South, Willan); a six-volume reprint series, The Chicago School of Criminology 1914–1945 (2006, Routledge); and Green Criminology (2006, with Nigel South, Ashgate) He is the founding co-editor of the journal Theoretical Criminology Dr Harriet Pierpoint is a Reader in Criminology and Criminal Justice at the Centre for Criminology at the University of South Wales Her research interests relate to criminal process and vulnerable people, and, more recently, animal abuse She has undertaken a number of funded research projects including for the Youth Justice Board, Home Office, Ministry of Justice and the National Offender Management Service Cymru and has publications in internationally recognised, peer-reviewed journals, such as Policing and Society: An International Journal and Criminology and Criminal Justice: The International Journal She is a co-editor of the Handbook on Crime, for Willan Publishing She has also presented her research at key national and international conferences and has been by invited by academics and practitioners to give guest lectures She is a member of the Executive Committee of the British Society of Criminology (Chair, Regional Groups and Specialist Networks) and of the South Wales Police Independent Ethics Committee
