 collaborated  with  the  USU  Chemistry  Club  in  producing  Haunted  Lab  Night   (2)  The  athletic  department  utilized  our  large  vortex  cannon  for  crowd  entertainment  during  the  San  Jose   State  football  game  (which  undoubtedly  contributed  to  our  34-­‐33  victory)   (3)    We  were  pleased  to  host  Professor  Toni  Sauncy  (SPS  National  Council  President)  to  give  APS  DPP,  USU  SPS  helped  produce  a  two-­‐day  demo  show  for  the  public,  collaborating  with   BYU,  Columbia  U,  the  Contemporary  Physics  Education  Project,  General  Atomics,  ITER,  U  of  Rochester,   Lawrence  Livermore  National  Lab,  and  MIT,  November  17-­‐18,  2011   Note:    Due  largely  to  our  active  undergraduate  research  and  SPS-­‐based  educational  outreach  programs,  USU   was  named  as  one  of  the  inaugural  (2012)  recipients  of  the  American  Physical  Society’s  Department  of   Distinction  Award  for  Improving  Undergraduate  Physics  named  Outstanding  Chapter  for  6th  consecutive  year   SPS  Leadership  Scholarship  (2012):  Linsey  Johnson  applied—currently  under  review   Associate  Zone  Councilor  (2012):  Linsey  Johnson  was  nominated—not  elected   SPS  Outstanding  Student  Award  for  Undergraduate  Research  (2012):  Rachel  Ward  applied—was   selected  as  one  of  the  two  recipients  for  this  year   SPS  Outstanding  Chapter  Advisor  Award  (2012):  Brian  Tracy  has  submitted  a  nomination—currently   under  review   Sigma  Pi  Sigma  Chapter  Project  Award  (2012):  Doug  Ball  applied—received  a  Chapter  Award  (see   below)     Notes:    (1)  After  15  years  of  dormancy,  USU  SPS  was  revived  in  2005    Every  year  since,  the  chapter  has   been  named  “Outstanding”  by  National  SPS    The  National  SPS  website  has  said  of  us:  “USU's  SPS  Chapter   exhibits  a  depth  and  breadth  of  activities,  from  research  to  outreach  to  service,  that  every  chapter  in  the   country  would  do  well  to  emulate.”   (2)  Previous  USU  Leadership  Scholars  are:  Jodie  Barker-­‐Tvedtnes  (2008),  Robert  Call  (2010),  and  Lance   Petersen  (2010)   (3)  Rachel  Ward  is  the  third  USU  student  to  receive  SPS  recognition  for  Outstanding  Undergraduate   Research:    Jodie  Barker-­‐Tvedtnes  was  a  recipient  director  of  the  annual   Intermountain  West  graduate  research  symposium   o In  the  last  two  years  Lance  Petersen  and  Michael  Stewart  have  held  elected  posts  in  the  USU  BJ  Myers,  2009,  Dan  Fenn,   2010,  Robert  Call,  2010,  Linsey  Johnson,  2011,  Brian  Tracy,  2011,  Jordan  Rozum,  2012,  and   Rachel  Ward,  2012)    Chamberlin  was  also  a  Rhodes  Scholar  finalist  in  2008   o In  fall  2011,  Linsey  Johnson  developed  and  taught  a  university  course,  “Outreach  in  Physics,”   taken  by  12  undergraduates   o As  stated  above,  we  have  had  three  SPS  Leadership  Scholars  (Barker-­‐Tvedtnes,  Call,  and   Petersen)  and  three  Outstanding  Undergraduate  Researcher  citations  (Barker-­‐Tvedtnes,   Chamberlin,  and  Ward)     SPS  in  the  news   o Over  the  last  two  years  Linsey  Johnson  and  Robert  Call  were  interviewed  on  Utah  Public  Radio   discussing  SPS  outreach  activities  associated  with  Science  Unwrapped    Charlie  Sim  and  Doug   Ball  were  interviewed  on  Salt  Lake  TV  station  KSL  concerning  the  “20,000  Bouncy  Ball  Drop”   (see  the  cover  of  the  Spring  2011  SPS  Observer)  and  Physics  Day  at  Lagoon   o The  chapter  has  been  cited  in  a  half  dozen  print  news  stories  over  the  last  three  years  and  was   the  University’s  outstanding  student  organization  in  2011     The  individual  initiative  of  Jodie  Barker-­‐Tvedtnes   created  the  revitalization  of  USU  SPS  in  2005-­‐6    This   photo  of  Jodie  and  her  daughter  Kalila  was  the   centerpiece  image  on  the  National  SPS  website  during   the  International  Year  of  Astronomy  in  2009     Sigma  Pi  Sigma  Activity  Report     • Induction  was  held  Council  (and  new   interim  Director)   About  50  current  members  and  friends  and  family  members  joined  this  year’s  inductees   After  the  ceremony,  officers  Doug  Ball,  Scott  Jensen,  and  Zach  Butterfield  introduced  a  new  Σ ΠΣ   Annual  Chapter  Report,  page  16   CHAPTER  NAME  &  #  HERE  Annual  Chapter  Report  for  the  year  2011-­‐2012   • chapter  program:  Champions  Club   o Designed  to  facilitate  goal  achievement  leading  to  success  in  securing  grad  school  admission   and  obtaining  positions  in  high  school  teaching  and  industrial  employment   Doug  Ball  applied  for  and  received  a  Chapter  Project  Award  to  help  fund  Professor  Sauncy’s  visit     The  induction  ceremony  was  preceded  by  dinner  in   the
