What made that ring jump?” Physics day at Lagoon: Robert Call at the SPS demo booth [Physics Day at Lagoon is an annual day of physics-‐based competitions (such as best measurements of ride accelerations) at the Lagoon amusement park Typical middle and high school student attendance is about 7,000.] Part 5: Our chapter’s other efforts to further the SPS Purpose/Mission • USU SPS Facebook sites: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Utah-State-University-SPS-Outreach/152305074796202 http://www.facebook.com/pages/Utah-State-University-Society-of-Physics-Students/109921842398923 • A community of leaders o Jinni Meehan, an SPS/ΣΠΣ graduate member, was appointed (2012) director of the annual Intermountain West graduate research symposium o In the last two years Lance Petersen and Michael Stewart have held elected posts in the USU student government o USU students (Jodie Barker-‐Tvedtnes and Doug Ball) have served as associate zone councilors for three of the last four years Annual Chapter Report, page 15 CHAPTER NAME & # HERE Annual Chapter Report for the year 2011-‐2012 • o Since 2006 (and aided by a “scholarship competition bootcamp” run by Professor Peak), USU SPS students have received a Fulbright Student Scholarship (Jan Marie Andersen, 2007); a NASA Space Technology Research Fellowship (Amberly Evans, 2012); three NSF Graduate Research Fellowship recognitions (Jan Marie Andersen, 2010, Nathan Carruth, 2010, and Tamara Jeppson, 2012); and 15 national Goldwater Scholarship recognitions (Heidi Wheelwright, 2006, Keith Warnick, 2006, Jennifer Albretsen, 2007, Tamara Jeppson, 2008, Jodie Barker-‐Tvedtnes, 2007 and 2008, Sydney Chamberlin, 2008, Taren McKenna, 2009, BJ Myers, 2009, Dan Fenn, 2010, Robert Call, 2010, Linsey Johnson, 2011, Brian Tracy, 2011, Jordan Rozum, 2012, and Rachel Ward, 2012) Chamberlin was also a Rhodes Scholar finalist in 2008 o In fall 2011, Linsey Johnson developed and taught a university course, “Outreach in Physics,” taken by 12 undergraduates o As stated above, we have had three SPS Leadership Scholars (Barker-‐Tvedtnes, Call, and Petersen) and three Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher citations (Barker-‐Tvedtnes, Chamberlin, and Ward) SPS in the news o Over the last two years Linsey Johnson and Robert Call were interviewed on Utah Public Radio discussing SPS outreach activities associated with Science Unwrapped Charlie Sim and Doug Ball were interviewed on Salt Lake TV station KSL concerning the “20,000 Bouncy Ball Drop” (see the cover of the Spring 2011 SPS Observer) and Physics Day at Lagoon o The chapter has been cited in a half dozen print news stories over the last three years and was the University’s outstanding student organization in 2011 The individual initiative of Jodie Barker-‐Tvedtnes created the revitalization of USU SPS in 2005-‐6 This photo of Jodie and her daughter Kalila was the centerpiece image on the National SPS website during the International Year of Astronomy in 2009 Sigma Pi Sigma Activity Report • Induction was held April 3, 2012 • 14 new members were inducted • • • o This makes 88 new inductees since 2007 Our guest speaker was Professor Toni Sauncy, President of the SPS National Council (and new interim Director) About 50 current members and friends and family members joined this year’s inductees After the ceremony, officers Doug Ball, Scott Jensen, and Zach Butterfield introduced a new Σ ΠΣ Annual Chapter Report, page 16 CHAPTER NAME & # HERE Annual Chapter Report for the year 2011-‐2012 • chapter program: Champions Club o Designed to facilitate goal achievement leading to success in securing grad school admission and obtaining positions in high school teaching and industrial employment Doug Ball applied for and received a Chapter Project Award to help fund Professor Sauncy’s visit The induction ceremony was preceded by dinner in the University’s Skyroom Restaurant Annual Chapter Report, page 17 New inductee Leda Sox asserts that her career goal is to take Professor Peak’s job In the back, Professors Jan Sojka and Toni Sauncy get new inductee Manuel Pichardo to sign the “Red Book.” Professor Sauncy with Doug and Whitney Ball
