THE S TORY OF GDA S Guideline Daily Amounts or GDAs were first established for adults in 1998, originally for use on the back of food packaging They came about through collaboration between the UK government, consumer organisations, nutrition experts and the food industry, which was overseen by the Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD) They were based on the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy’s report on Dietary Reference Values (London: HMSO, 1991) This government report still stands today as the basis for dietary recommendations in the UK and is underpinned by objective, science-based evidence that has not been superseded In 2005 a cross-industry technical group supported by nutritional and academic experts further developed the GDA concept to include additional GDA values for children across different age ranges, and revised the salt GDAs based on targets set by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) A full set of GDA values endorsed by scientific experts was therefore agreed across the food chain To begin with, GDA information was included on the back of food packaging, as it still is on many products Research by the IGD showed that by 2005 two-thirds of a group of 1028 people had seen the term GDA and of those, a further two-thirds understood its meaning In 2005 the supermarket chain Tesco looked at the idea of using percentage GDA information on the front of its own-brand packaging to show per-portion nutrition and calorie information in the context of the whole diet When Tesco researched how the GDA information influenced the foods its customers bought, it found that healthy option product 224 GDA DIET RESOURCES sales figures increased, while less healthy option sales figures decreased In 2006 another consumer study, the Omnibus Study, found that 96% of respondents were in favour of food manufacturers using a consistent approach to food labelling and 87% of respondents found the GDA labels ‘clear and simple’ The move by Tesco and the positive consumer research led to the launch of a consistent GDA labelling scheme for use across all food and non-alcoholic drink products, so that consumers could more easily and clearly know what was in what they were eating and drinking The GDA label, known as the ‘What’s inside guide’, translates the science underpinning GDAs into consumerfriendly information that can be used to make healthier food choices By clearly showing the content of a product in per-portion values, rather than per 100 g, the GDA labels relate to the amount of a food people actually consume and how much of the GDAs the food contributes ‘One of the single most useful steps in helping someone address their dietary needs is for them to realise that they have to think about all the food and drink in their diet if they want to change No man is an island, nor is any one meal a success or failure You can only make a difference if you map and manage all the food you eat.’ Jane date, 72 companies have adopted GDA labelling: retailers, food services, convenience store chains and 61 manufacturing companies: ᭤ ᭤ ᭤ Retailers like Tesco, Morrisons, Aldi, Somerfield, Lidl and Netto all use GDAs on their own-brand products Manufacturers like Bird’s Eye, Danone, Hovis, Kellogg’s, Kraft, Mars, Quaker, Ryvita, Tate & Lyle and Unilever, as well as many less familiar names who
