believed to have stemmed from the English universities of Oxford and Cambridge during the 12th and 13th centuries The hoods are a carryover from the times when monks, who operated universities, wore them when collecting alms Use of the academic robe came to the United States in 1754, with the founding of what is now Columbia University In 1895, a commission of university ofcials adopted a universal code of design and color for academic garb which has undergone various revisions, the latest in 1960 Styling of the robes varies for the bachelor’s, master’s and doctor’s degrees; the width of the border and the length of the hood increase with each advanced degree In the hood, the color of the velvet border indicates the type of degree, while the lining designates the colors of the institution which granted it A Distinguishing Color Table for Academic Attire Honor Cords Bachelor Degree Candidates Cum laude 3.30 to 3.59 G.P.A -Blue Magna cum laude 3.60-3.70 G.P.A -Gold Summa cum procession Originally a weapon, use of the mace as a ceremonial standard began when use of heavy armor was discontinued The frst known use of the mace in civic ceremonies was in the 14th century in England and France In academia, the frst known mace was used at the University of St Andrews, Scotland’s oldest university, in the 15th century Today, nearly all American universities have a mace, used almost exclusively at commencement exercises By tradition, the mace-bearer at the Geauga Campus and Twinsburg Academic Center is the chair of the campus Faculty Council Hail to Thee, Our Alma
