In the high school, we run a journalism program open to all the students to participate in reporting and running a student newspaper EXPANDING HORIZONS – MENTORING & PARTNERSHIPS Students who have not traveled outside their city boundaries gain an expanded awareness of the world around them and the opportunities that exist by participating in a variety of liberal arts, cultural and professional experiences in our Expanding Horizons programs In addition, we run two programs in the schools that benefits the students; Caring for Kids activities which helps provide the students with necessary items and our Mentoring Matters program where we bring in leaders who give motivational presentations and help inspire the students ART WITH THE MASTERS We provide focused art instruction in a small group setting where students are taught the techniques of art masters and use these learned skills in their projects We provide Field Trip opportunities to galleries and corporate offices where often, their own work is on display This year we focused on artists Henri Matisse and Jackson Pollock International Art and Writing Project Through the annual International Art Project, Beyond Basics extends an opportunity for school children around the world to creatively express their vision of peace and sharing it with others Through the ongoing International Writing Project, students are given the opportunity to creatively express their thoughts and dreams about their lives on a variety of subjects through writing essays They were able to share their work with one another through a centralized website which encourages them to communicate with one another sharing ideas and stories about their lives READING WORKS THE DETROIT FREE PRESS, WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY, AND WXYZ SPONSORED Family Literacy pilot project reaching out to older siblings and parents in the community at Thirkell Elementary School pg All School Status 2011-2012 As of June 2012… We directly touched the lives of 5,400 children We had the commitment of 46 organizational and business partners We are supported by over 2,500 volunteers We published 3,024 books through our Publishing Centers this year and have one-on-one tutoring to public school students who have been identified through testing and teacher recommendations as significantly below grade level Trained tutors teach students using a nationally recognized reading curriculum that combines phonics practice with an age-appropriate series of books Additional Reading Programs Beyond Basics also works to inspire the love of reading in all students in every school where we have a presence We this through three activities: •The Reading Buddies are trained adult volunteers that read one-on-one with students •Book Clubs are reading groups led by an adult volunteer Together the group reads a character building short story or poem and a related activity •Award Winning Author Readers are volunteers who read to small groups or classrooms of children This program helps fill the need all children have to be read to, as well as, builds knowledge and vocabulary of children’s literature that their peers have experienced pg pg pg Publishing Centers K-8 3,024 Books published this year The Publishing Center is open to all students in the school Students improve their writing skills with the help of volunteers Working one-on-one with a mentor, students write and revise stories, which are then published with hardbound covers The students take pride in publishing their stories and the hardbound book is proof of their achievements pg Finney High School School Beyond Basics provides intensive, one-on-one tutoring to public school students who have been identified through testing and teacher recommendations as significantly below grade level Trained students’ poetry or short stories with one another in this group activity •Author’s that Inspire visit with students to discuss their writing, theme and the process for publishing a book pg 23 pg 24 pg 25 High School Journalism Program Finney High School Student Newspaper: The Highlander The Journalism Program, is open to all students interested in reporting, and writing about school news, opinions and events Beyond Basics staff assist the students in conducting interviews, writing and editing interesting and informative articles and training the students on how to create a newspaper layout using the InDesign program The school newspaper helps to build community among the students and staff as one of our students said “The newspaper brought pride back to Finney.” Outcome Highlights • Served the entire student body • Elevated school pride and spirit! pg 26 International Art and Writing Project Student artwork currently on display at the DIA through June 3rd Through the annual International Art Project, Beyond Basics gives the opportunity for students around the world to creatively express their vision of a universal theme This year’s theme was “Peace.” Through the on-going International Writing Project, the same students are given the opportunity to express their thoughts and dreams about their lives through writing essays on a variety of topics All Beyond Basics International Art and Writing participants share their artwork and essays with each other through a secure website set up for them to display their work and communicate with one another through the site pg 27 Expanding Horizons – High School This program allows students to participate in a variety of liberal arts, cultural and professional experiences such as Book Club, Character Building, Music, Life Skills, Field Trips and much more • Caring for Kids A student was able to get braces with the help of a supporter Mercedes Benz Financial Services donated notepads and folders for the
