Manchester Academy Homework Policy 2014 – 2015 Manchester Academy Homework Policy Scope Manchester Academy believes that homework is an essential part of a good education. It is the Principal’s responsibility to decide how much homework is required but this is done through consultation with colleagues within the Academy. Homework is any work that is to be completed outside the timetabled curriculum. Homework may contain an element of independent work, thinking and enquiry although the content is likely to be determined by the subject, context and assessment strategies. Some students may find it difficult to complete work at home and therefore Manchester Academy has a number of after school clubs and rooms available for students to use. Homework enables students to: Engage parental communication and support Consolidate and extend work covered in class Complete assessment pieces of work Gather evidence or materials Prepare for new learning activities Develop research skills such as independent working Show their progress and understanding of a specific topic or subject Homework tasks Homework tasks can include a variety of tasks that will support learning and progress. Below are some examples of tasks although this is not a complete list Independent learning Consolidation of work learned or started in class Practice – learning by doing Coursework/assignments/revision Research ‘doing’ experiencing something Reading/revision Interviews Drawing Recording Attendance at after‐school enrichment activities 1 of 8 Homework will reflect and progress learning in the classroom and therefore be determined by the teacher. It is expected that homework tasks are varied and at least once a half term are in response to the individual targets of the students. Homework in Maths will be set weekly using the online programme: MyMaths (www.mymaths.co.uk). Students are given individual passwords to log‐in from any computer, however, any students who are unable to access the internet at home may access the in‐school support described below. In GCSE subjects, all examinations, which contribute to student’s final grade, take place in the summer term of year 11. As such, it is crucial that all students in KS4 periodically and frequently review the material covered during lessons in order for them to retain the quantity of information required for success in these terminal examinations. Participation Support Students can attend homework clubs after school (whole school and departmental) and use the library (3‐4 each evening) if they require space, teacher intervention or ICT facilities. School computers may be used to enable access to on‐line programmes such as MyMaths, if internet access is unavailable at home. Rewards Student will receive a merit on completion of homework Homework of exceptional quality will be passed onto department heads or heads of year for further recommendation Exemplar homework may be shared with the class or put on display Sanctions If a student fails to attempt homework, a de‐merit will be given Students will complete homework in a teacher detention For students who repeatedly fail to complete homework, parental contact will be made by the teacher and if required the head of department Responsibilities Student Listen to the teacher when giving homework instructions in class Copy the instructions for the homework and deadline in planner Ensure homework is completed and handed in to meet deadlines Attempt all homework and if they have difficulties they must liaise with the teacher prior to the deadline Class Teacher Provide homework in accordance to the agreed time and frequency Ensure that the student records the homework in planner 2 of 8 Ensure that homework is referenced in the class book or student folder if it is to be completed elsewhere Give full and comprehensive instructions on what is expected Set realistic deadlines Mark and return all homework promptly in accordance with the school marking policy Provide help and support if and when required Issue rewards or sanctions as described below Curriculum Area Leader Monitor departmental homework during book scrutiny and include specific feedback relating to homework to individual teachers when measuring typicality Form Tutor Check students planners weekly to ensure students are recording homework and parents are signing planners to acknowledge the receipt of homework. Liaise with parents if this is not being done Year Director Complete the monthly feedback sheets in order to track homework across year group and return to JSM Support form tutors if required in implementing the homework policy, for example in liaising with parents Role of Parent/Carer Provide an appropriate place to work at home or arrange an alternative location Work with your child to identify specific times for homework Check homework content and presentation Sign planner each week Provide feedback to school Timetable Rationale: Create an even and manageable distribution of work for students o Teachers setting homework must refer to the schedule and ensure that when other subjects are setting homework that day, the time expected to complete tasks do not exceed the recommended time allocations. This can be done by simply dividing time guidelines below by the number of subjects setting homework. o National average for time spent on homework Years 7 & 8 45‐90 minutes per day Year 9 60‐120 minutes per day Years 10 & 11 90‐150 minutes per day j 3 of 8 Enable all subjects the opportunity to consolidate learning outside the classroom Support QA procedures in tracking homework allocation o CALs to complete QA proformas for homework scrutiny to ensure that homework is being set in‐line with the policy o Parents to sign planners to communicate to the school that they are aware that homework is being set o Form tutors to check planners to ensure that homework is being recorded and signed by parents Provide a framework for parents to initiate homework sessions with their child Impact As one of our AFI’s include decreasing the gap between Eng and Maths to ultimately increase our 5 A*‐C including Eng and Maths, it is expected that homework be set in these every week. The impact of the homework policy will be monitored through positive feedback at parent forum, student voice and increased attainment. Communication CAL consultation: 9/9/2014 Parents will receive written notification on the policy. It will also be available on the website. Students will receive versions relevant to their year groups which they can stick in their planners; they will also be reminded of what is expected via the plasma screens.
