Pupil Transition Surveys Public Health East Riding commissioned the survey to find out what information would be helpful to parents and pupils when preparing for a transition from primary to secondary school and secondary school to college To achieve this, we consulted with children, young people and their families, as well as the teaching staff What you told us  Of the 247 respondents, half were from parents/carers and nearly 30% from pupils  The majority of parents/carers and children who responded to the survey were preparing to transition to secondary school  Pupils wanted to know who they would be in a class with at their new school/college This was less of a concern for parents, who wanted to know more where they could go if they needed help What equipment to bring, the school timetable and what happens if they get bullied also featured high on the list of what respondents wanted to know about the new school/college  Pupils and teaching staff felt that access to information to the new school/college should be months before the move, however pupils preferred this information a term before  Pupils preferred to receive this information from a teacher at their current school, whereas parents/carers and teaching staff felt it should be on a new school visit  If they had any concerns or questions about the transition, pupils preferred to go to staff at their current school, whereas parents/carers and teaching staff preferred to go to staff at the new school What we did next The information will be shared through a report with Public Health East Riding, as well as with East Riding specialist services and those who helped co-produce the questionnaires The results/recommendations will also be shared with schools and parents, with a method of communication yet to be agreed The intention was for the evidence found through the survey to address, with accuracy, the type of information to share with parents and pupils, along with the best way to share and the best time of the year to share it with them, for all to feel confident about the transition Public Health East Riding commissioned the work and further work, relating to transitions, may be developed in the future We will be working with the Preparing for Adulthood Team, using the information to inform approaches to transitions and consider how best to gather the views of pre and post 16 year olds, as an underrepresented group in the survey The consultation was helpful and as a result, we will look to continuing this approach in the future
