Running Head: Process Recording on Individual Process Recording on Individual Tanisha Love Bb9802@wayne.edu Wayne State University February 17, 2013 SW 3020 Running Head: Process Recording on Individual A B C D E F G Client name: Rachel Ray Age of client: 15 years old Marital status of the client: Single Occupation of the client: Student How many times have you seen them previous to the recorded interview: 1st Visit? Goals for the interview: To gather valuable information Anything else that would assist the professor’s understanding of the situation: Teen Pregnancy Scare Dialogue: Worker: What brings you in today? Client: I believe that I may be pregnant If I am pregnant, this would be the second time that I have been and my mother will kill me Worker: What makes you believe that you may be pregnant? Client: I haven’t had a menstrual cycle in the past four months Worker: Have you had any other signs of pregnancy? Client: My breast has been sore and I haven’t had much of an appetite, which are all similar to before Worker: Have you taken a home pregnancy test? Client: No! Worker: What I think we should cover first today is to find out if you are in fact pregnant Do you agree? Client: Yes! Worker: Will you be willing to take a test today? Client: I guess I’m just scared to find out That is what makes me not want to take the test Worker: Okay, well it’s absolutely up to you But, I believe that it would be the best thing to at this point Client: Okay, I will take the test then Worker: Okay Rachel, we have got the results back and it shows that your test came back negative Client: Thank You! I am very happy to hear that Worker: What you think we need to focus on now to eliminate this from happening again? Client: Well, I heard of birth control from my friends, but my mother will kill me if she knew But, I want to continue being sexually active Worker: Rachel how about we invite your mother in to our next session? Client: Okay! Worker: Good, when you and your mother come in on next week, we can sit down together and I can introduce the matter then Therefore, we can begin to discuss different forms of contraceptives Clients: Okay, thank you! Worker: See you next week Running Head: Process Recording on Individual Feelings: During this particular session, I felt pretty effective The reason I say this, is because I was presented with a client who was under age, but obviously very sexually active My client has already experienced being pregnant once and now feared the fact that she could possibly be once again Behind determining the fact that the client wasn’t pregnant, it then led us to seek possible ways to eliminate the chances of this happening again Getting the client to agree to bring in her mother into our next session, to further discuss different forms of contraceptives to better protect her, showed me how effective this session must have been for my client Analysis: What I identified during this session, is the understanding that my client clearly enjoys being sexually active But, what I also recognized is how uneducated she is on the use of contraceptives The skill I tended to use during this session with my client was the use of both openended and closed-ended questions The reason I chose to use these particular techniques was to get a solid answer from the client when necessary, as well as to get a more in depth answer from the client about her own thoughts and feelings on her particular situation With this client I am heading towards ways to possibly get her to either eliminate her activity all together or to at least consider forms of contraceptives, in the case that she decides to continue being sexually active At this point, I feel that the skills used during my session with the client were proven to be very effective In the future, I actually still see these skills as being very effective in this case, if a situation like this were to arise once again None Running Head: Process Recording on Individual Evaluation: A I see myself as being very effective during this particular session I feel I illustrated to the client that I was not being judgmental of her situation and that I was only there to provide her with the resources that she needs to aid in better protecting herself B At this time, I don’t see any specific skills I would like to improve on considering that the session went rather smoothly, but I am always looking for ways to better present myself to clients to gain their trust in me C Is it appropriate to discuss different forms of contraceptives with teens and their parents, or would I be required to have a nurse present? Is it appropriate for me to provide students with pregnancy test? What other skills could I have used during my session with the 15 year old client? Comparative Analysis: Over the last two semesters, I can say that my ability to record accurately both the verbal and non-verbal interaction between the client and I, has improved tremendously My ability to recognize, understand, and verbalize in writing my feelings and reactions to the situations, people involved, and/or the environment have become a bit easier to me Now that I have had the opportunity to practice the role of an actual social worker already in the field over a two semester time frame has had an incredible impact on my developing skills as a soon to be social worker When I first began to process recordings in my SW 3010 course last semester, I found myself to be very confused I never even heard of a process recording until that moment in time I found it to be very challenging for me to both conduct an interview and keep track with note taking all at the same time to help ensure accurate information conducted during my session with a potential client But, on the other hand, now that I have been introduced to the procedure, I feel myself getting better and better over a course of time Running Head: Process Recording on Individual My ability to analyze the interaction in terms of what was happening during the interaction between both the client and I have become much stronger In the beginning course of developing process recordings in SW 3010, I struggled with my interviewing techniques I found my ability to be empathetic during sessions with potential clients to be employed very well But, I had a difficult time formulating open-ended questions I always tended to use more of closed-ended questions, which I realized typically didn’t get me that far on gathering valuable information However, after being granted the opportunity to have plenty of practice, I have grown more competent in my skills of using more forms of open-ended questions that helps me to successfully collect much more in-depth information about my particular client (s) situation And, even though I in fact believe that I become more competent each day, I am still very open to learning different techniques in how to conduct a successful interview with my clients in the near future Running Head: Process Recording on Individual References: Kirst-Ashman, K (2012) Understanding generalist practice (6th ed., pp 585-586) United States: Brooks/Cole, Cengage Learning Love, T (2012) Process Recording #3 for SW 3010 Unpublished Manuscript, Wayne State University, Detroit, MI Rachel R (Personal Communication, February 5, 2013)
