ADVISORY COMMITTEE Enviro Science, Ag Science, & Food Science MEETING MINUTES ‘Agriculture Center for Education’, MJC West Campus November 16, 2017 6:00 P.M The meeting was called to order by Advisory Committee Chair John Scheuber at 4:00 p.m on Thursday, November 17, 2017 in the MJC ACE Pavilion Minutes were reviewed and approved Dinner was served (working meeting) Committee meetings break off into working groups 6pm INTRODUCTIONS of members – See list at bottom of minutes OLD BUSINESS DISCUSSED Overview of the programs including the following: Ag Ed - Classes, enrollment, questions Environmental Science - Classes, enrollment, permaculture lab, A.S Degree & Certificate, questions NEW BUSINESS Agriculture Science (Ag Ed & Ag Com) We discussed ways to expand the program and we recognized more students are enrolling in Ag Ed classes, so what could we do? We discussed adding a B.S degree as the group saw great opportunities for that here in the Modesto area They recommended adding a certificate to add recognition and perhaps show how many students are really taking these basic core classes throughout the department The recommendation was to add a certificate that would be called “Agricultural Science Certificate” and would have a range of required units to look at something around 14 but 10-16 units might work Environmental Science Approved the continuation of the degree & certificates with recognition that class substitutions may occur as the major grows and expands We discussed Water Management as a potential Certificate what that might look like compared to other programs that are currently being taught Sacramento State has a program and it’s believed Merced College had a program Who would teach the class? We would look for adjunct instructors potentially people from City of Modesto water treatment plant We discussed looking at Sac State classes as a model for our classes and that MJC Ag would work with the City of Modesto to develop these courses as they see a need for employment in this area Discussed and approved adding necessary classes as well as going thru the process of developing a certificate Discussed the reactivation of previously taught classes and looked at how they would fit into the degree The list of classes are ENSCI 112 Introduction to Sustainable Systems (Reactivation) approved Previous classes that had been approved at last advisory meeting and are now active AGGE 150 Sustainable Ag Production (Reactivation) ENSCI 110 California Water (Reactivation) What are things we need to provide thru Equipment, funding, Strong Workforce grant(s)original and new grant funding sources?
