8th Annual Welcome Mid-Hudson Regional Business Plan Competition hosted by Marist College April 17, 2020 MHRBPC http://bit.ly/2PY75zO Competition Committee Contacts: Cynthia Worrad cynthia.worrad@marist.edu 845-575-3611 Roberta Diggins roberta.diggins@marist.edu 845-575-3601 2019 Sponsors Past Regional Participant Schools: PARTICIPANTS“No official U.S Government or Service Academy endorsement is implied The views and opinions expressed by this organization not necessarily state or reflect those of the U.S Military Academy, Department of the Army, or Department of Defense.” Background and Basics The MHRBPC provides a platform for students to: share their ideas, research the market and competitive landscape, complete financial projections, and compete for cash and inkind prizes Plus additional benefits: network, receive advice, gain experience 10 Regions for the New York State Business Plan Competition based on New York’s ten Regional Economic Development Council zones Mid-Hudson Region: Counties Dutchess Orange Putnam Rockland Sullivan Ulster Westchester NYS Competition Established in 2010 Captial Region Central New York Finger Lakes Long Island Mid-Hudson Mohawk Valley New York City North Country Southern Tier Western New York Regional Expansion 2013 Background and Basics NYS Competition History 2010: A regional business plan competition with a focus on energy technology was organized by SUNY College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) In partnership with: University of Albany School of Business Lally School of Management and Technology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Union Graduate College School of Management Inaugural event held at CNSE’s Albany Nanotech Complex 2013: Regional Expansion Regional partner institutions host semifinal competitions in each of the regions every April Top teams from each region advance to the statewide final competition Since 2010, over…  4,000 Students have pitched their ideas  2,500 Teams participated in the NYS Business Competition  132 active ventures  $1,000,000 invested  $2,800,000 cash and in-kind prizes awarded  $45,000,000 raised by businesses launched General Competition Overview 8th Annual Mid-Hudson Regional Business Plan Competition: hosted at Marist College, Poughkeepsie, NY APRIL 17, 2020 New York State Business Plan Competition: hosted at Sage Armory, Albany, NY May 1, 2020  Students compete within six tracks  Students present to a panel of expert judges  Ten minute presentation, plus minutes for Q&A  The first and second place winners from each track in each of the 10 regions advance to the State Finals Eligibility Requirements  Open to all currently enrolled graduate and/or undergraduate students from accredited New York State colleges and universities in the Mid-Hudson region  Student(s) must be the presenter(s) in all stages of the competition  Teams may compete in only region per year  Students may not participate on more than team each year of the competition  Grand prize winners from previous years’ competitions are no longer eligible to compete in the competition   They are encouraged to participate as speakers, mentors, volunteers, and judges! Individual members of winning teams may return with new teams in subsequent years Eligibility Requirements Teams with Incorporated Ventures  Cumulative public and private capital raised may not exceed $100,000**  Student ownership of venture must be at least 80% Tracks Ventures should fall into one of the following tracks If your venture could fit in more than one, starting at the top, choose the first one that your venture fits AgTech & Food Energy & the Environment Military & First Responder MedTech & Well-Being Technology & Entertainment Consumer Products & Services Tracks AgTech & Food Any idea, technology, process, product, and/or service that relates to agriculture, food production or distribution or food waste Tracks Energy & Environment Any idea, technology, process, product, and/or service, not included in any previous category, that relates to energy, clean energy, renewable energy, energy efficiency, environmental, and/or sustainability applications Tracks Military & First Responder Any idea, technology, process, product, and/or service, not included in any previous category, that relates to the needs of utility workers, military, first responders, government applications or transportation industry Tracks MedTech & Well-Being Any idea, technology, process, product, and/or service, not included in any previous category, that relates to biotech, sports, medical care or well-being, including mental health Tracks Technology & Entertainment Any idea, technology, process, product, and/or service, not included in any previous category, that relates to consumer software/online platforms, cryptocurrency, entertainment, fintech, or music Tracks Consumer Products & Services Any idea, technology, process, product, and/or service, not included in any previous category, generally intended for use by individuals or households Presentation Content  STRUCTURE: What is the structure of your company?    VALUE PROPOSITION: What is your company’s key value proposition?    Do you have the team members that you need to grow the business? How will the structure change with growth? Why your business rather than the competitors? What are the benefits of your products or services? GENERAL DESCRIPTION: What is your business model?  Describe how your business makes money and how it will assure great and long term sustainability for the future Business Model: PRODUCT/SERVICE: What is it? How does it work? What stage of development? COMPETITIVE POSITION: Who is the competition? What makes you better? Is it sustainable? Proprietary information protection? MARKETS: Target markets? Barriers to Entry? CUSTOMERS: Who are your specific consumers? Sales? Sample Format Company Name at the top of each slide Mission and Purpose Business Model   How will your business generate sustainable profit? Company History   Product  Describe the product or service     Markets Customer benefits Differentiation from competitors How to keep others out, barriers to entry (e.g patents, competitive advantages, etc.) Keep technical description to a minimum     Who are the key customer (Names, demographic profile, etc.) Size of markets and growth rate How to reach these markets Other trends likely to influence market     Management team and relevant experience especially that which is related to start-ups Industry experience Other key people and advisors Number, mix and capabilities of employees    Current sales/sales anticipated in years, 5, 10 (pricing and volume) Margins Relative to financing needs People Financial    When and why was the company formed?
