FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY COMMENCEMENT CONVOCATION HALF PAST NINE O'CLOCK FRIDAY MORNING APRIL TWENTY -SIXTH NINETEEN HUNDRED NINETY-ONE FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY Florida Atlantic University, a member of the State University System of Florida, was established in 1961 and opened its doors to students in 1964 In addition to its 850-acre campus in Boca Raton, FAU has two campuses in Broward County (Fort Lauderdale and Davie) and one in north Palm Beach County (Palm Beach Gardens) The University's eight colleges Arts and Humanities, Business, Education, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Science, Social Science and Urban and Public Affairs, and its School of Nursing-offer 56 bachelor's, 42 master's, specialist's, and 14 doctoral degrees As of December 1990, the University had awarded 46,301 degrees, serving more than 165,000 individuals through its instructional programs In December 1967, Florida Atlantic University was elected to regular membership in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, at which time the Commission on Higher Education of that Association granted full accreditation to all of the University's programs In accordance with Association regulations, this accreditation was reaffirmed in 1973 and again in 1983 In the spring of 1991, the University had more than 13,000 students and 750 faculty members Dr Anthony James Catanese President and PRESIDENT Dr Anthony James Catanese Dr Anthony James CatanesejoinedFloridaAtlantic University as the University' s fourth President in January 1990 Prior to his appointment, he was the Dean of the College of Architecture at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he spearheaded a fund-raising program that yielded millions of dollars in endowed chairs and professorships, equipment, real estate and other gifts Dr Catanese established Florida's first Ph.D programs in arc hi tecture,urban and regional planning, and building construction; additionally, he directed the development of refined academic programs with highly selective admissions requirements Dr Catanese's academic and administrative skills have also been utilized in university settings at the Pratt Institute in New York City, where he was Provost and Professor of Architecture; at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he served as Provost and Professor of Architecture and Urban Planning; at the University of Miami, where he was the James A Ryder Professor of Transportation and Planning and Associate Dean of the School of Engineering and Environmental Design; and at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, where he was a Research Professor and Director of the Center for Planning and Development Dr Catanese received his bachelor's degree in city and regional planning from Rutgers University in 1963, his master of urban planning degree from New York University in 1966, and his Ph.D degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1969 Active in community and governmental affairs, Dr Catanese was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the National Urban Policy Task Force, and he served as chairman of both the Milwaukee City Planning Board and the Gainesville City Planning Board Dr Catanese also was president of the Park West Development Corporation, a not-for-profit organization that planned and carried out a major development project in Milwaukee He currently is a member of the board of Florida's Corporation for Promoting Environmental Education, appointed by Governor Bob Martinez A prolific writer, Dr Catanese has authored 11 books, 18 chapters in books, more than 65 articles in journals, and 35 research monographs Two of his books, Planners and Politics: Impossible Dreams and Urban Planning, have been best sellers in their fields In his first 18 months as President of Florida Atlantic University, Dr Catanese has coupled boundless enthusiasm and energy with strong leadership skills to begin his mission of guiding the University's rapid maturation into an institution of national and international prominence HONORARY DEGREE John Naisbitt John Naisbitt, author of Megatrends and co-author of Re-inventing the Corporation and Megatrends 2000, has 30 years of experience in the world of business A successful entrepreneur, he has also been an executive with IBM and Eastman Kodak He is a director of CRSS, Inc., the country's largest architectural and engineering finn, and has served on the governing board of the National Association of Security Dealers and as a director of the American Institute of Architects During the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations, Mr Naisbitt served as special assistant to then Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, John W Gardner Previously he was assistant to the U.S Commissioner of Education, Francis Keppel, and assistant to the Chainnan of the Commission of Presidential Scholars, Dr Milton Eisenhower He also served as special assistant to the Johnson White House Mr Naisbitt studied political science at Utah and Cornell as well as at Harvard, where he has also been a visiting fellow He holds five honorary doctorates in the humanities Among his honors is the 1980 Benjamin Y Morrison Award for his efforts to promote global understanding and the Medal of Italy, awarded by the Italian government in 1988, in recognition of his interpretation of trends in the world economy Megatrends, the culmination of nearly a decade of research, is one of publishing's great success stories The book was on TheNew York Times best-seller list for more than two yearsmuch of the time as number one-and has been a best-seller in eighteen countries, including Japan, where it was also number one Worldwide sales have exceeded eight million The international best-seller Re-inventing the Corporation, co-authored by Patricia Aburdene, followed Megatrends in 1985 Megatrends 2000, also co-authored by Patricia Aburdene, has been published in eighteen countries
