This introductory session will answer the following questions: What is improvement science? How does one engage in improvement science? Why should one employ improvement science? To what extent can improvement science be a methodological tool for social justice? Furthermore, this workshop will discuss logistics of conducting improvement research in EdD programs. We will also address (mis)conceptions of rigor related to improvement science scholarship. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to apply improvement science to a complex problem of practice. Participants will leave the workshop with strategies for employing and teaching improvement science Location: Conference Room 1B: Richland-Lexington Alumni Board Deepening Our Understanding of Improvement Science Dissertations in Practice Presenters: Jill A Perry & Debby Zambo, CPED Abstract: This workshop is designed for CPED members who have a basic understanding of improvement science but still have questions about its appropriateness and use in Dissertations in Practice In this workshop participants will be engaged in activities and discussions focused on the Dissertation in Practice’s purpose, why this purpose is well suited for using Improvement Science as a signature methodology, and how this methodology, when combined with the Dissertation in Practice experience, reinforces practitioner learning for activist leadership and change In this workshop participants will come to understand: Why improvement science as a signature methodology is a science and scientific How and why improvement questions differ from research questions The place of literature in improvement work Where the tools of improvement fit into Improvement Science Dissertations in Practice Why improvement work should be judged with quality standards that are different from PhD dissertations – redefining rigor and validity to distinguish good improvement studies How the mind of an improver aligns with CPED’s notion of scholarly practitioner Location: Conference Room 1C: Coach Dawn Staley and Women’s Basketball Page MONDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2019 PRE-CONVENING WORKSHOPS 12:00PM - 4:00PM Are Methods Enough? Presenter: Andrew Leland, Southern Illinois University Abstract: In order to “prepare leaders who can construct and apply knowledge to make a positive difference” (CPED Principle #2), leaders need to understand how to find, conduct, and interpret research But is that enough? What else should leaders be able to do, and how should EdD programs prepare leaders to have the skills to promote research and evidence use? Drawing on a study of four exemplary education doctorate programs from around the country, this workshop will help you identify your program’s strengths and weaknesses at promoting evidence use among graduates and generate plans to make improvements relevant to that goal While we will consider how you teach research methods, we will also consider issues related to teaching leadership and organizations and the kinds of projects and activities that can promote skills at supporting evidence use The program will begin by considering teaching cases based on our field work and move into a series of activities and exercises for considering your own program. Location: Conference Room 1A: Joy and Paul Carter Using Protocols to Support the Dissertation–in– Practice Experience Presenter: Nancy Dana, University of Florida Abstract: As a follow up to her 2018 June convening large group learning exchange focused on the use of protocols to facilitate productive conversations about the professional practice doctorate, join Nancy Fichtman Dana in this workshop to explore the ways protocols can be used within EdD programs themselves with a particular focus on supporting EdD students through several critical junctures in their Dissertation-in-Practice journeys We’ll briefly explore one model for actualizing CPED principles within the dissertation-in-practice experience to contextualize the session, and subsequently learn several protocols designed to help EdD students: (1) explore problems of practice, (2) select a problem of practice for study, (3) frame the problem as a research question, (4) develop a plan for study, and (5) analyze data Location: Ballroom 1B Developing EdD Online/Hybrid Programs: Sharing Best Practices Presenters: Carmen McCrink & Jean McTavey, Barry University Abstract: This workshop is designed for CPED members who are charged with the development of fully online and hybrid EdD programs, or for those who wish to enhance their current programs. Presenters will share best practices including the sequence of courses, timeframe for course delivery, dissertation benchmarks, faculty assignments for dissertation work, resources for online/hybrid students, and other important elements Participants will reflect and dialogue about ideas as to best practices based on their institution’s guidelines for delivery of online/hybrid doctoral programs Location: Ballroom 1A Optional Excursion: University of South Carolina Museum of Education Details: The University of South Carolina Museum of Education invites you to attend their fall exhibit entitled: A New Kind of Youth: Student Activism in South Carolina and the Civil Rights Movement.
