message and I’ll try to return your call as soon as possible COURSE DESCRIPTION: Welcome to Introduction to CLS 2210 Clinical Laboratory Sciences is a profession that serves as a vital partner in clinical diagnosis and medical decision making Clinical laboratory scientists Fall2020 perform laboratory analyses to diagnose, treat, and monitor disease, and to evaluate the maintenance of an individual’s health These healthcare professionals are experts in the scientific disciplines of clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, immunohematology, and microbiology This course will provide a general overview of Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) as well as career opportunities and educational requirements During this course you will learn about the organization and function of a typical clinical laboratory, routine tests performed, basic information about each of the scientific disciplines of CLS and new technologies within the field I will briefly introduce related laboratory professions, such as cytotechnology and histotechnology, which are considered within the clinical laboratory Course Goal: At the end of this course the student will understand the fundamental concepts of clinical microbiology and will be prepared to fulfill his/her role as microbiologist in the health care system Stimulate professional and selfdevelopment thus students will be successful in their careers and enjoy life-long learning Train and develop analytical thinking individuals to enable them to identify, troubleshoot and discuss laboratory findings Instill love and understanding of their profession, ethical responsibility in order to provide the best health care possible Promote the need to engage in their community, professional activities and civil matters Course Objectives: A Cognitive Upon completion of this course the student should be able to: Define Clinical Laboratory Science Describe the role of the CLS in health care Fall2020 Explain the function of the clinical laboratory in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease Describe, in general terms, the organization of the Health Care System in the U.S including hospitals and clinics Identify and differentiate Clinical Laboratory Scientists in relation to other health care professionals Describe the basic organization of a clinical laboratory Understand the differences between certification and licensure Compare and contrast CLS vs CLT List the laboratory departments in a clinical laboratory 10.Discuss the ethics of health professions 11.Explain the purpose of joining professional organizations 12.Explain what are universal precautions 13.Describe basic principles of infection control including PPE 14.Explain successful implementation of chemical hazards 15.Recognize the importance of safety, quality assurance and quality control in the clinical laboratory 16.Define terms used in QC (accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity) 17.Differentiate QC and QA 18.Describe the various types of volumetric glassware, the techniques for their use, and the various types of glass to manufacture them 19.Compare various types of centrifuges 20.List and describe the various grades of chemicals used in the laboratory including the levels of quality and purpose 21.Describe overall product and functions of lab information systems 22.Describe the five steps in automated analysis 23.List the routine tests performed in chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, and microbiology departments 24.Describe the function of the hematology, chemistry, microbiology and immunohematology departments 25.Summarize the process of blood formation 26.Differentiate among the different types of leukocytes 27.Describe the appearance and function of platelets 28.Define the terms hemoglobin, erythropoietin, hematocrit, CMV 29.Differentiate plasma from serum 30.Differentiate between normal values and panic values 31.Define key terms in chemistry: cholesterol, cardiac panel, liver panel, complete metabolic panel, etc 32.Differentiate various states related to abnormal urine chemistry analysis Fall2020 33.Compare the methods available for urine chemistry analysis 34.Explain the importance of fecal occult testing 35 Define normal flora and explain the role in the human body 36.Differentiate among the different types of organisms analyzed in the microbiology lab (bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses) 37.Differentiate sterilization vs disinfection 38.Describe main steps in the identification of bacteria B Affective To show the appropriate responsible behaviors, students will demonstrate: A positive attitude by being prepared for lecture completing assigned tasks on time and displaying self-motivation Organization by utilizing time effectively, sequencing and prioritizing tasks for completion with time constraints and maintaining a neat clean work Attention to detail by diligently pursuing accuracy Stability and self-confidence by approaching and performing routine tasks confidently without assistance and maintaining composure Appropriate interpersonal skills by cooperating and communicating effectively with classmates and instructors and displaying courteous, considerate behavior and appropriate appearance Ethical behavior and integrity adhering to safety policies and abiding by all rules and regulations of the institution 6 Fall2020 Course Polices Class Schedule: This is an Online Course Lectures will be recorded and sent to students This method will allow the student to review the material several times Since the original course schedule was on Mondays and Wednesdays, lectures will be posted Monday and Wednesday every week Assignments will be given weekly (every Wednesday) Assignment due date is the following Monday so you will have enough time to answer the questions Assignments will count 10% of the total grade We will have virtual meetings every Wednesday from 1-2 pm to review material, clarify questions or anything else you may need These meetings are mandatory Attendance of this meetings will count 5% of the total grade Technological resources The student must have available or have access to the following technological resources: a Computer/laptop with camera (webcam), audio and microphone b USB flash drive c Good internet connection d Microsoft Office (Word, Power Point, Excel) e Windows Media Player f Internet browser (i.e Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox) g Blackboard’s Respondus LockDown Browser Fall2020 Attendance Policy: The student is expected to attend all review virtual meetings on Wednesday from 1-2 pm It is responsibility of the student to notify the instructor of any absence Text: Linné and Ringsrud’s Clinical Laboratory Science: the Basic and Routine Procedures 8th edition Test Policy: There will be three hourly examinations The lecture exams may include brief open questions (cases) If you cannot take the test for a legitimate reason (death, illness etc.) inform me as soon as possible and we will arrange a time according to my schedule Students should maintain a 70% or above average to continue in the program I need you to be aware that as soon you start the program the minimum passing percentage is 75% Grading: Hourly exams 15% each (45% Final exam 40% Grade Scale: 90-100 = A 80-79 = B 70 = C Below 70 = F Assignments 10%, meeting attendance 5%, hourly exams 45%= 60% Final 40% The exams will require Respondus Lockdown browser I tis very important that you will have good internet to avoid problems You can use your phone as a hotspot LockDown Browser + Webcam Requirement a This course requires the use of LockDown Browser and a webcam for online quizzes and exams The webcam can be the type that's built into your computer or one that plugs in with a USB Simply start LockDown Browser and navigate back to the exam to continue c Guidelines When taking an online test, follow these guidelines: ⋄ Ensure you're in a location where you won't be interrupted ⋄ Turn off all other devices (e.g tablets, phones, second computers) and place them outside of your reach ⋄ Before starting the test, know how much time is available for it, and also that you've allotted sufficient time to complete it ⋄ Clear your desk or workspace of all external materials not permitted books, papers, other devices ⋄ Remain at your computer for the duration of the test ⋄ If of LockDown Browser have a "Help Center" button located on the toolbar Use the "System & Network Check" to troubleshoot issues If an exam requires you to use a webcam, also run the "Webcam Check" from
