Public Health: Community Health Option DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH PROMOTION AND ADMINISTRATION COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY PUBLIC HEALTH: COMMUNITY HEALTH OPTION Public Health/Community Health Educators promote good health by educating the public about the causes of disease and the means of prevention They also help other health personnel plan and develop community health services which will meet the community’s special needs Community Health students must document 100 hours of health education experiences prior to enrolling in HEA 463, Internship in Health Education PUBLIC HEALTH: COMMUNITY HEALTH CAREERS Graduates are prepared to: * Determine the health needs of the community * Plan effective health education and health promotion programs * Implement and evaluate educational experiences * Coordinate and manage the provisions of health education and services * Serve as resource people in health education * Communicate health and health education needs, concerns and resources * Conduct health promotion research Graduates are employed in: * Public health agencies &Health departments * Volunteer agencies * Hospitals and other health care settings * Local, state, and national governmental agencies * Business and industrial settings * Family resource or youth service center GRADUATE PROGRAMS The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in Community Health Education is a 43 credit –hour program designed to meet national standards identified by the Society for Public Health Educators, American Association for Health Education and the Council on Education for Public Health Coursework includes a wide range of subjects such as foundations of public health, health behavior, health education strategies, organization and administration of public health programs, planning and evaluation, epidemiology, community organization and development, and research The MPH is recognized as one of the most significant degrees for leadership positions in health education Graduates also will be prepared to pursue advanced degrees and to complete national exams, such as the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and the Certified Public Health Professional (CPH) exams Additionally, the graduate program in School Health Education (MaEd) primarily provides advanced preparation for teachers already certified to teach health education in schools In addition, numerous graduates are working in wellness promotion in settings such as hospitals, voluntary organizations, public health agencies, businesses and health spas Graduate Internships are available FACULTY The Department of Health Promotion and Administration has 13 full-time faculty The faculty possesses a wide breadth and depth of skills, training and experience They have specialties and serve as state or national consultants in field such as public health, chemical dependency, sexuality, emotional wellness, fitness and others The faculty is committed to student welfare and teaching excellence Several have been recognized with University Teaching awards FOR MORE INFORMATION Office of Admissions CPO 2A Eastern Kentucky University 521 Lancaster Avenue Richmond, KY 40475-3102 www.eku.edu 1-800-465-9191 or 1-859-622-2106 Department of Health Promotion&Administration Begley 420 Eastern Kentucky University 521 Lancaster Avenue Richmond, KY 40475-3102 www.healthed.eku.edu 1-859-622-1142 Suggested Curriculum Guide for Public Health/Community Health Option (B.S Degree) Fall – Freshmen Year Spring -
