Information Technology Teaching and Learning with NYU Classes Teaching and Learning with NYU Classes NYU Classes allows instructors to create a customized online site to accompany their course Determining which tools within NYU Classes are necessary to achieve specific pedagogical goals is the first step towards designing a site The below document includes four common teaching and learning objectives many instructors facilitate with the help of a learning management system Each solution offered corresponds to several tools within NYU Classes Click here to download the Teaching and Learning with NYU Classes guide How can I publish information about my course? Solution: Settings, Syllabus, Announcements, and Calendar You can edit the name of your course site along with the information displayed on the home page of your course site by going to Settings > Edit Site Information Add text, images, or even a video to introduce your students to your course! How can I make course content available to my students? Solution: Resources, Groups, News, External Link and Lessons The Resources Tool is the place for all your course documents and files Within the Resources Tool, you can: o Upload files (PDF, Word, images) o Add web links (URLs) o Create and organize multiple folders Resources folders can be available to your entire course, or specific Use the Syllabus Tool to inform your students about the course description, objectives, and much more! You can either create and add Syllabus Items, or Redirect to an existing syllabus file that you’ve uploaded to your Resources folder, or have as an external URL Use the Announcements Tool to inform your students about upcoming events, meetings, or date changes Add an attachment or send an accompanying email notification with new announcements The Announcements Tool will even automatically create notifications for: Groups or Sections Just want to share content with specific students? Create Groups! Within Settings, you can manually Manage Groups Send Messages, Assignment, and Announcements to specific groups, or create unique Resource Folders, Forums, and Tests and Quizzes just for groups The News Tool is an RSS reader; this allows you to embed any RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed into your course site An RSS feed collects news updates in real time RSS feeds are available from a variety of outside news or blog websites Within your course site, you may have more than one News Tool The External Link Tool allows you o The Assignments Tool o The Tests & Quizzes Tool All course site Announcements will filter into the home page of your course site Use the Calendar Tool to organize the course calendar for your students Each item added to the calendar can be customized to include a title, message, duration time, event location, and event frequency Events can be created for your entire course or select groups to share any website within your course site! The External Link Tool can either display the web site within the body of your course site, or open in a new tab Within your course site, you may have more than one External Link Tool The Lessons Tool helps organize various forms of content, interaction, and participation within your course site and presents them as a series of intuitive modules, or lessons, that your students may follow By aggregating the functionality and data within other tools into a single place, you can drastically simplify the tasks required of your students Content/functionality can either be created directly within the tool, or aggregated from the existing tools within your NYU Classes course site Information Technology Teaching and Learning with NYU Classes How can I encourage collaboration? Solution: Forums, Chat Room, Messages, Set Permissions, Roster Use Forums Tool to facilitate asynchronous discussions with your students The Forums Tool can hold multiple forums, topics, and threads Note: Notifications are sent to your email address when an individual replies to your thread to encourage ongoing participation Use the Chat Room to facilitate synchronous discussions with your How can I grade students’ work or provide feedback? Solution: Gradebook, File Exchange Tool Use the Gradebook as a way to organize all of the work and tasks you assign to your students The Gradebook can be custom configured in several ways including weighted categories or setting your own grade scale The Gradebook can automatically collect and organize graded items from Forums, Assignments, and Tests and Quizzes: students The Chat Room can hold multiple rooms open to all participants within your course site or select groups All course site participants may use the Message Tool to send private messages; Messages can be sent to individual or multiple recipients as well as to specific Groups and/or Sections withi n the course site Note: All messages are sent, received, and recorded within the Message tool; only a copy of an NYU Classes message may be sent to a recipient’s personal email address Setting Permissions within several tools allows instructors to determine the level of participation they’d like their students and/or TAs to have o To grade student work in Forums, you must first create an item/entry in Gradebook and then link the desired Forum or Topic You can either grade students’ discussions (thread) within the Forum or from the Gradebook Statistical information within the Forum is provided to help determine participation o To grade Assignments, you may either add the Assignment to the Gradebook, or link the Assignment to an existing Gradebook item/entry Feedback for an assignment is done through the Assignments Tool Note: If you add an Assignment to the Gradebook you will only be able to assign and modify grades via the Assignment Tool and not directly from the Gradebook NOTE: To turn on any tool within your course site, go to Settings > Add/Edit Tools within a course site Below are the tools with Permission settings: o o o o o o o Resources Calendar Announcements Forums & Topics Assignments Gradebook (TA only) Chat Room Use the Roster Tool to help both you and your students know each other better! The Roster Tool displays all site participants’ names, their role in your course site, and their NYU Classes My Profile! Note: To create or edit your NYU Classes My Profile, go to My Workspace > My Profile o To grade Tests and Quizzes, a Gradebook item/entry will be created once your assessment is published Note: Unlike Forums and Assignments, you cannot create a grade book entry first then link to a specific test/quiz The File Exchange Tool is a quick way to share private files or documents with each of your students This tool provides an individual folder for each student in your course Both students and the instructor are notified when a file has been added to their File Exchange tool Note: The File Exchange tool is not integrated with the Gradebook
