fundamental educational activities, teaching, research and service, as detailed in the mission statement To support these areas, the College of Business strategic plan includes six goals that align with UC|21, the University of Cincinnati's academic strategy • Students at the Center: Offer learning opportunities and support that meet students' diverse needs and ensure a valued college experience • Research Excellence: Fuel knowledge creation that is recognized and valued by the University of Cincinnati | College of Business • • • • leading scholarly communities and by our partners Academic Excellence: Develop highly demanded professionals by providing programs that build vital foundational, specialized and collaborative capabilities Partnerships: Create and nurture valued, enduring and visible relationships with our alumni, business, educational, community and donor partners Sense of Place: Provide an engaging environment that enables learning, fosters collaboration and facilitates student and partner support Opportunity: Ensure financial viability and increasing self-‐sufficiency through systemic efficiencies, focused investment and targeted resource generation EFFECTIVE PRACTICES Academic Program Assessment Assessment efforts at both the student and program level are a key to monitoring the effectiveness of our academic programs At the UC College of Business, all courses are assessed annually Every program has well developed learning objectives and assessment procedures In recent years, our assessment has shifted from an emphasis on indirect means (e.g., student, employer and alumni satisfaction, student retention rates, and NSSE data) to direct means of student learning outcomes In addition to assessment within the college, university processes assess programs at both the graduate and undergraduate level At the graduate level, programs are assessed internally by the university on a five-‐year cycle The university expects to add a similar cycle for undergraduate programs in the future Currently, all programs are being reviewed by the university and college as part of the quarter to semester conversion process, which will conclude in 2012 These efforts have allowed us to monitor our programs, student satisfaction and employer feedback to implement changes and innovate programs as needed Advising and Career Services The college offers both undergraduate and graduate advising, as well as targeted career services resources Our undergraduate advising center consists of two admissions counselors who meet with students and their families to determine fit and eligibility for admission, as well as seven undergraduate academic advisors Each advisor is assigned a targeted subset of students to ensure that each area receives accurate and consistent information, as well as allowing students to develop long-‐term relationships with their advisor Targeted divisions include Kolodzik Business Scholars, BS in Industrial Management students, transition students from UC colleges and Cincinnati State, probationary students and business minors At the graduate level, master’s students have access to one admissions counselor and two academic advisors While these resources are utilized for procedural and program design questions, many students rely on academic program directors for guidance on appropriate course work and career planning Doctoral students rely on mentors and doctoral program University of Cincinnati | College of Business directors within their department for the majority of their student services related needs In addition to academic advising resources, the college has its own Office of Career Services that builds on programs provided at the university level to give our students more targeted career coaching A dedicated counselor manages graduate student career services, hosting discussion panels, resume reviews and one-‐on-‐one coaching At the undergraduate level, the Office of Career Services provides mock interviews, resume workshops, panel discussions, meet-‐the-‐firm nights and many other interactive career skill opportunities Business and Alumni Relationships Building strong partnerships is not only at the core of the College’s strategic goals; it is also a strength that provides great benefit for our students In 2006, the Dean revitalized the Dean’s Business Advisory Council (BAC) The BAC was designed to provide advice, counsel and assistance to the leadership of the College The council includes a cross-‐section of business leaders from the Cincinnati region and national business community, representing small, medium and large companies from the public, private and family-‐ owned sectors Council members are appointed to three-‐year terms BAC members are highly involved with major decision-‐making in the college, including participating in our recent Dean search These individuals are engaged and committed to the College, interacting with faculty, staff and students daily to ensure success Active participation of BAC members has led to key donor opportunities, advancement of Dean’s initiatives within the business community, and many productive corporate partnerships Truly some of our best supporters, this group represents the good will of the larger Cincinnati business community toward the UC College of Business In addition to strong relationships with business partners, the College of Business enjoys an extremely strong alumni support system Efforts to support the college by alumni are led by the college’s Alumni Board of Governors This group meets monthly to plan and execute alumni functions, create scholarship fundraising events, and discuss issues pertinent to furthering the College’s mission Again representing a cross-‐section of local businesses, the group provides strategic and tactical support for promoting the college in the alumni community The board is considered a model on the University of Cincinnati campus and is often recognized as UC’s most active college-‐based alumni group The group interacts closely with the larger University of Cincinnati Alumni Association to ensure that College of Business alumni are involved and engaged in all university and college events Student Involvement With over twenty active student organizations within the College of Business alone, our students are some of the most involved on campus Within the college, students lead many of the signature events and activities that help define what it means to be a UC business student The college’s student government, the CoB Tribunal, organizes a fall student organization fair, sponsors a fall career fair, and plans the College of Business Week in the spring This group helps to define the extra-‐curricular component of being a business University of Cincinnati | College of Business student at UC Other student groups, such as Delta Sigma Pi and Alpha Kappa Psi, focus more heavily on
