Development/ Engagement Activities Academic Program-Community Partnerships • • • The SOE established the Scholar-Practitioner Center for the Advancement of Educational Leadership and Learning Organizations Drs Barry Kanpol and Glenda Moss initiated this endeavor Its purpose is to sustain scholarly practice over time as a structure for improving education and learning Central to the proposed work of the center is to draw in members of the IPFW community, East Allen County Schools’ community, Fort Wayne Community Schools’ community, and other local school district communities into collaborative work around scholarship and practice The SOE has embarked on a new partnership with East Allen County Schools (EACS) to produce a journal “that would combine research, dialogue, and intellectual growth among and between various forms of educational leadership at the two educational sites.” The journal would be housed in the new Center The editors would be Drs Barry Kanpol, Glenda Moss, Kathleen Murphey, and Joe Nichols from the SOE The journal will be refereed with an Editorial Board to include members from IPFW and EACS (Dr Jeff Abbott, Superintendent of EACS), as well as other members of the local and national education communities We are currently in the process of establishing an editorial board and gathering reviewers As an extension of this partnership relationship with EACS, one SOE faculty member, Dr Glenda Moss, taught Secondary English Methods and Secondary Social Studies Methods on-site at Paul Harding High School Her IPFW preservice English teachers worked with nine English freshman students in a classroom setting in the spring of 2004 and fall of 2004 She and her preservice social studies teachers worked in an 11 th grade American history classroom in the spring of 2004 and in a U.S government classroom in the fall of 2004 In the fall of 2004, she expanded her work in schools to include Fort Wayne Community Schools - Northrop High School and South Side High School Six preservice English teachers worked with 9th grade students identified for having failed ISTEP tests in middle schools Preservice English teachers and preservice social studies teachers were assigned to individual teachers at Northrop High School to complete 50 hours of service learning Unlike earlier observations, students designed and taught lessons • • 18 The Dean of the SOE, Dr Barry Kanpol, serves on the Cabinet of the Fort Wayne Community Schools (FWCS), the governing administrative unit under the leadership of Dr Wendy Robinson, Superintendent of FWCS The SOE continues to collaborate with FWCS in the Leadership Education for Academic Development (LEAD) Project Through the Wallace-Reader’s Digest grant, FWCS has established the Learning to Lead Collaborative to recruit, prepare, and support school leaders The Educational Leadership program at IPFW is developing and creating a new leadership cohort program and curriculum to attract prospective teacher-leaders It has designed creative courses for LEAD grant candidates in the “Exploratory Leader Academy.” This Academy is designed to allow teachers to “explore” becoming a principal or educational administrator without giving up teaching The Dean is exploring other ways to use the LEAD grant with IPFW and FWCS, such as the possibility of using faculty knowledge for summer in-services on topics such as assessment, learning styles, diversity, etc The Dean meets with the LEAD Design Team once a month Short-term Academic-Community Collaborative Projects • • • • • • Dr Amy Nitza supervised 12 school counseling interns in the fall of 2004 These students were placed in schools representing Fort Wayne Community Schools, East Allen County Schools, and Southwest Allen Recruitment and Retention Extensive field and supervisory experiences that faculty are involved with place them in direct contact with diverse administrators, teachers and students in the local school corporations These activities allow for student recruitment in the undergraduate and graduate programs at IPFW Specific examples include the movement of Dr Moss’s undergraduate social studies and Recruitment and Retention Our current Dean, Dr Barry Kanpol, has numerous international experiences including educational and citizenship experiences in Australia and Israel Dr Kathleen Murphey has previous international teaching experience in Germany and China and Dr Sheena Choi, originally from South Korea, was recently tenured and promoted to Associate Professor For the 2004-2005 academic year, the Department of Educational Studies hired visiting professor, Dr Marc Djamou, a recent graduate from Penn State University Dr Djamou has extensive experience in the areas of Social Foundations and literacy and has previous degrees from his home country in the Ivory Coast, Africa Dr Djamou taught undergraduate courses in social foundations as well as graduate courses in social foundations and research for the fall 2004 and spring 2005 semesters In addition, the Department also hired Dr Kwadwo Okra as an adjunct professor to teach two social foundations courses for the 2004 Summer I session Dr Okra originates from Ghana, South Africa and is currently an assistant professor on the South Bend campus The Department of Educational Studies has two tenure-track faculty searches underway in the areas of elementary language arts methods and reading The search committees are currently actively recruiting and interviewing qualified candidates for these positions The faculty in the Department of Educational Studies is currently developing a 5-year strategic plan that includes a component for increasing faculty diversity Campus Climate We believe the campus climate about diversity improves through all of our efforts directed at students, faculty, and staff Our accreditor, NCATE, also makes high demands on us to improve diversity awareness on all fronts We 26 feel this issue informs everything we do, and we continually seek new ways to promote diversity initiatives Curriculum Embedded within and throughout the curriculum of the Department of Educational Studies are multiple opportunities for students to experience diversity within their university courses and in the field in terms of internships and student teaching experiences in diverse urban settings Multiple opportunities for our students to work with students in settings that include more than 70% minority student populations, more than 70-80% low-income students, local schools that include high percentages of English as a Second Language students, and multiple experiences with students experiencing a variety of special education needs, provide our students with a wealth of opportunities Several professors in the Department center their research interests on diversity issues that include topics of immigrant women (Dr Hickey), Asian multi-nationalism and citizenship (Dr Choi), the Holocaust (Dr Lindquist), marginalized populations (Dr Moss and Dr Murphey), and issues of local homelessness, abuse, and special education needs (Dr Agness) These are a few examples where our students benefit from the research interests and experiences of our faculty Drs Parke, Crites, and Leatherman completed the proposal for the Master of Science in Education degree with a major in Special Education This degree program is designed to meet the needs of a very diverse population of teachers needing the special education license Dr Parke was the author of the syllabi for all of the courses to be included in the degree, which will address diversity of the students with special needs The M.S Ed programs in Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Educational Leadership, and Special Education (approval pending) have integrated a 30-hour field experience, “Service Learning for Diversity,” in which Master’s candidates complete 10 hours of field experience in each of three required courses by working with P-12 students in social service agency settings, outside of their regular school day The goal is to promote the candidates growth in understanding and working with
