The Community Development Academy is a series of daylong workshops that give community leaders the assessment and strategic planning information necessary to plan and implement strategies to address community growth opportunities It equips local leaders with information, resources and processes to create quality sustainable communities The program consists of highly interactive work sessions for local leaders that cover a variety of community development tools and techniques to help meet the challenges, opportunities and impact that community and economic growth presents for communities ACADEMY BENEFITS The benefits of participating in the Academy include: • Effective assessment and planning that matches community needs with available community skills and accessible internal and external resources • Effective leadership that incorporates citizen participation • Effective communication in sharing a vision that citizens can embrace • More support for affordable housing and improved rural services • Effective overall organizational development • More success in obtaining state, local or federal resources and funding • The opportunity to visit with funding specialists from private, state and federal agencies • Effective anticipation of community infrastructure needs A more detailed agenda is available on the Community Teams’ or Community Coaches’ links above quotes: “ I really appreciated the help we received in crafting a strategic plan, as well as being able to connect with the financial resources necessary to lead us in the right direction.” “The tools and resources you provided are wonderful! I use them almost every day for things I’m involved in here in the community.” ACADEMY HISTORY The State of Kansas learned in 2005 that Fort Riley would be one of the U.S military posts targeted for major expansion The communities surrounding Fort Riley knew much planning would be needed to prepare for an increase in population In an effort to educate community leaders on how to prepare for the increased demand for housing and associated growth in the towns and neighborhoods surrounding Fort Riley, the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka, USDA Rural Development, and Kansas State University Research and Extension created a three-day workshop called the Community Development Academy Ten communities/counties participated in that first Academy and were represented by teams containing three t to eight people Demand for the Academy was high and because of the interactive nature of the program and limited space, several communities were turned away who had wanted to attend Community Coaches Page: Developing Community Coaches Main page: (I really like this one) : “Coaching a community isn’t always about having the answer; it can be about asking the right questions at the right time.” WHAT IS A COMMUNITY COACH? A Community Coach is a guide who supports communities and organizations in identifying and achieving their goals Community coaching is built on the understanding that community change is most effective when community members have the skills to design a planned, inclusive approach to community change Coaches will gain community planning perspectives and skills to leverage community investments for long-term community health and stability Community coaching is focused on building economically viable communities, renewing civic engagement and enhancing community decision making and governance This workshop offers information and professional development skills in a format not offered anywhere else Through a series of “train-the trainer” interactions, this workshop works with professionals in their location to accomplish several key goals: • • • To help extension coaches understand a comprehensive framework of community and community engagement processes To help extension professionals gain confidence in coaching effective local teams and providing assistance to key community decision makers, communication networks and public involvement practices To assist coaches and community members to locate important, relevant economic and demographic information, and how to access state, regional and national resources • To help coaches effectively mentor community teams in community planning and development efforts—keeping focus on community sustainability and enhancing quality of life -Workshop purpose and goals (tailored to community coaches, taken straight from page of the brochure) (Shortened bulleted form of all of this somewhere on the page) Links across side or top (in order): 1.) Because of limited space, preference will be given to communities with teams that: • Consist of people who have an active role in housing, community or economic development efforts or who will have that role in the future • Are comprised of at least five people, with one youth representative • Have a commitment to attend all five days of academy sessions and complete any homework assigned Target audience: City council members, county commissioners, mayors, chambers of commerce, major employers, industrial development groups, 4-H, social service agencies, homebuilders, lenders, realtors, developers, churches, nonprofits, housing authorities, architects, FFA, appraisers, local media, attorneys, accountants, school district personnel, public power districts, regional planning agencies, 4-H, or youth participants from rural communities in south east Kansas 2.)
