IDSE101 Assignment – Contextual Design, Final Design Research & Synthesis Presentation Create contextual design work models that visualize the entire research experience with one of your participants (select the most interesting CI to model) Feel free to model more than one participant • Sketch flow, sequence, culture, physical and artifact models on big paper or whiteboards • Label all utterances with line numbers from your transcript • Re-create these models in a digital tool, like Adobe Illustrator, for clarity Integrate your research, synthesis, and contextual design work models into the vision story you are telling in Pat’s class to support the solution you are building in studio Be sure to include: • Who are you? What did you research? Why did you research that? What methodology did you use? Why? How does it work? • Who were your participants? Why did you select them? • What did you observe? What was surprising, interesting, or unique? Show pictures and video to make a point, and include quotes from real people that you found particularly interesting • What is the synthesis process, and how does it work? • What insights did you identify, and why did you identify them? How can you relate those insights to specific data points (reinforced with pictures and quotes), to really drive home their value? • What work models did you create, and what they mean? Why is the modeling process effective – what does it show that a transcript can’t otherwise show? • What are the big takeaways from the entire process, related to the people you observed and the broader social problem you investigated? Due This assignment is due on Wednesday, 10/15 Post a copy of the models, and your presentation, to the blog When you post material to the blog, make sure you include a description of what it is and why it’s important – simply posting the document won’t make much sense You not need to present a formal presentation in this class – the presentation grade below will come from the studio class, on 10/18 Grading Criteria Your points Total Points Description Presentation Describes the unique research and synthesis methodology used, and educates the audience about it Defines words, processes, methods in a way that is understandable Communicates focus, intent, and research goals Communicates insights Communicates work models Uses research evidence to clearly ground insights in data Makes a summary point that makes sense as a result of the entire research and synthesis process Command of room, confidence, presentation-demeanor Clear use of language, no spelling errors, etc Visually simple and cohesive presentation Document is posted to the blog, and the post makes sense and stands along Work Models 10 Includes a full set of work models 15 Models accurately represent data captured, and are thorough and complete 10 Models are visually simple and appealing, recreated in a digital tool like Illustrator 10 Models are posted to the blog with an accompanying description Xx IDSE101 Clear use of language, no spelling errors, etc 100
