WAPED Fall 2019 Conference Agenda Spokane, Washington October 17th – 18th, 2019 Thursday Oct 17th, 2019 8:00 – 9:00 am Registration 9:00 – 9:15 am Welcome Address from WAPED President 9:15 – 12:00 Rebecca Cory and Aimee Elber Disability Identity: Student Development, Policy, and Practice (includes break) 12:00 – 1:15 pm WAPED Business Meeting and Lunch 1:15 – 3:15 pm Marisa Hacket – Social Movements, Identity, and Disability (will be a break) 3:15 – 4:15 pm Morgan Parker – Ableism and Emotional Correctness 4:15 – 5:00 pm Commitee Breakouts and Report out 5:00 – 5:15 pm Wrap-Up and Door Prizes (must be present to win) 6:00 – 8:00 pm Hospitality Friday Oct 18th, 2019 8:00 – 9:00 am Registration 9:00 – 10:30 am Assistive Technology Advisory Commitee – Tech Show and Tell 10:30 – 10:45 am Break 10:45 – 12:00 Dr Naomi Jeffrey-Petersen – Accessibility Studies 12:00 – 12:30 pm Wrap-Up and Door Prizes (must be present to win) Presenter Bios: Rebecca Cory Rebecca C Cory, PhD, is Associate Dean of Instruction at Bellevue College, in Bellevue, Washington She has dedicated her professional career to the inclusion of students on the margins in higher education She served as disabilities services director at three intuitions and has co-edited two books on accessible pedagogy, Building Pedagogical Curbcuts: Incorporating Disability in the University Classroom and Curriculum (Syracuse University Press) and Universal Design in Higher Education, from Principles to Practice (Harvard Education Press) She has served as a faculty member in higher education leadership and adult education Rebecca lives in Seattle where she swims regularly in Puget Sound and enjoys the company of her spouse and backyard chickens Aimee Elber Aimee Elber is the Director of Disability Support Services at Spokane Community College In addition to holding a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services and a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership, Aimee has worked with people with disabilities since 1994 Aimee shows her commitment to diversity, disability awareness, advocacy, and fostering a rich learning environment for students by using a strengths-based “person first” philosophy, viewing individuals holistically and focusing on assets rather than barriers Aimee brings a diverse skill set to the table including a broad knowledge base surrounding ADA compliance, Universal Design, Career Counseling theory, Appreciative Inquiry, Veteran’s Services, Title IX, and Workforce Education She is proficient in American Sign Language Marisa Hackett Marisa is the director of the DRC at Bellevue College She has a master’s degree in Social Work and Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, both from UW She has previously worked in disability services at several other colleges within the state and has provided services in community settings Her philosophy centers on creating and providing an equitable educational environment for students with disabilities utilizing the lenses of Disability Justice and the Social Model of Disability In her free time she enjoys dancing, yoga, hiking, and cuddling with her cat Morgan Parker Morgan Parker is the Electronic Information Technology Accessibility (EITA) Specialist at Gonzaga University since 2017 Before joining Gonzaga, she received her B.A in Psychology from Saint Louis University- Madrid Campus She lived in Madrid, Spain running an English academy, attending college, and tutoring international students in psychology From 2007- 2009, she lived in Cork, Ireland where she played on the professional Glanmire Women’s Basketball team and helped secure the league trophy and national title years in a row Morgan has a strong passion for increasing inclusivity for all students on GU’s campus and supports an inclusive culture by helping spread knowledge and educational tools to build electronically accessible content Dr Naomi Jeffery Petersen Professor “NJP” studies the intersection of environment, culture, and technology, including such diverse applications as watersheds, railroads and military history, visual literacy, and informal learning environments She fosters collaborations across disciples, especially geography and public health She cultivated the partnerships resulting in the launch of CWU’s interdisciplinary Accessibility Studies Program which she now directs She also teaches educational foundations and has published on such topics as professional dispositions, online engagement, assessment and quantitative research methods Her favorite quote: “They don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” ...Thursday Oct 17th, 2019 8:00 – 9:00 am Registration 9:00 – 9:15 am Welcome Address from WAPED President 9:15 – 12:00 Rebecca Cory and Aimee Elber Disability...
