Advising 10

For the initial 12 hours, students receive guidance from Dr Neal or Dr Boyd Once candidates attain full SARTE status and fulfill admission requirements, they will be assigned a major professor Official advising communications occur via the University email system, and students can choose to meet with their major professor in person or complete advising online While advising is encouraged, it is not mandatory for all students.

Student Portfolios in the Master of Arts in Teaching Degree Program 10

The College of Education and Human Development is integrating portfolios into the assessment system for students in approved Teacher Education Programs, emphasizing performance-based outcomes.

The portfolio serves as a valuable tool for students to reflect on their understanding of how the included artifacts align with program outcomes It facilitates the development of reflective practitioners committed to continuous improvement while documenting each student's growth throughout the program Comprising various artifacts, documents, and evidence, the portfolio effectively showcases the knowledge, skills, and dispositions acquired by the students.

The Louisiana Components of Effective Teaching and the program’s Conceptual Framework have been successfully met by students After completing courses MAT 610, MAT 615, MAT 620, and either MAT 622 or MAT 623, as well as MAT 630, students will submit an Introductory Level Portfolio A Developing Level Portfolio is required for student teaching or internships, while the Competency Level Portfolio and an oral defense are necessary for graduation For detailed timelines and content requirements, students should consult the MAT Teacher Preparation Portfolio Handbook.

SARTE Status

Requirements for Full SARTE Status 10

To be considered for full SARTE status to the Master of Arts in Teaching degree program, an applicant must:

 Meet all requirements for admission to the Graduate School and to the Master of Arts in Teaching degree program.

 Apply for Selective Admission and Retention in Teacher Education (SARTE) in the first course (MAT 610)

 Achieve a grade of B or better in MAT 610 (Fundamentals I: Teaching and Learning for General Education) MAT 610 must be repeated if the grade is lower than a B.

 Complete a speech and hearing screening (refer to the Policy for Speech and Hearing Screening).

 Participate in an organized screening (refer to Policy for Interview Screening).

 Not have been convicted of a felony.

 Maintain a cumulative 3.0 graduate GPA with no grade below “C” and not more than one

Continuous Screening 10

On going screening of each student utilizing the standards of the Professional Program in

Teacher Education will occur each semester of a student’s enrollment

 Students will be permitted to repeat only two MAT courses.

 Students will be permitted to enroll in any course only twice.

Retention Procedures 10

Students demonstrating behaviors or characteristics that make it questionable whether they can succeed in the teaching profession will be referred for a Professional Performance Review A review may result in:

 No action being taken but further observations.

 Recommendation of a Professional Improvement Plan (PIP) monitored by the

Coordinator of the Teacher Development Program.

The SARTE Committee may recommend various actions, including probation with specific conditions, temporary suspension from the MAT and Teacher Education Program under certain stipulations, or expulsion from both the MAT Degree and the Teacher Education Program.

Appeal Procedures 11

Students seeking to contest the decisions made by the SARTE Committee can submit a written appeal for a joint review by both the Dean of the College of Education and Human Development and the Dean of the Graduate School.

Policies

Policy for Interview Screening 12

All students enrolled in the MAT program will be required to participate in a screening process.

Student Teaching and Internship

Student Teaching Semester 12

Student teaching is a full-time commitment lasting approximately eight hours a day throughout the semester, requiring student teachers to engage in the entire public school day along with any additional seminars or conferences Assignments for student teachers are determined by the Director of Student Teaching, who will consider various factors, but it remains the student teacher's responsibility to fulfill the requirements of their assigned placement It is essential for student teaching to occur within Southeastern’s designated service region, which includes districts such as Ascension Parish, East Baton Rouge Parish, Jefferson Parish (specifically Kenner and Metairie), Livingston Parish, St Charles Parish, St John Parish, St Tammany Parish, Tangipahoa Parish, and Washington Parish.

Requirements for Student Teaching 12

To qualify for student teaching, students must complete their training under the supervision of their graduating institution, as mandated by the State Department of Education's certification regulations for teachers.

Students must apply for student teaching at least one semester before their intended teaching semester The Director of Student Teaching will determine the specific grade or subject assignment, as well as the supervising teachers who will guide the student throughout their experience.

 Pass all required Praxis examinations: PPST, Content Specialty Area(s) and PLT

 Pass the Introductory Level and Developing Level of the Portfolio.

 Complete all required MAT coursework with a cumulative 3.0 average with no grade below “C” and not more than one “C” grade on graduate work.

 Have approval of the Director of Performance Assessment.

Internship Year 13

An internship can be accepted as a substitute for student teaching, involving two consecutive semesters of teaching at an approved school site within the relevant grade level and certification area Students have the opportunity to qualify for a year-long internship, which can take place either within or outside of Southeastern’s service region.

To qualify for an internship, a student must provide:

 Verification that all pre-requisites have been met the semester prior to the Internship.

 Verification that all required parts of the Praxis have been successfully passed.

 Written recommendation from all of the candidates’ methods instructors and a rating using the Professional Attributes and Characteristics Scale.

 Completed application for MAT internship.

 Verification that the school has a state approved classification

 Verification that the school is accredited by the regional accrediting agency

 Verification that the principal/assistant principal has certification in the principalship and training and supervision

 Verification that the principal/assistant principal has served in this role for a minimum of three years.

 Signed Principal/Assistant Principal Internship Agreement form.

The principal or assistant principal will assign a mentor teacher, who has at least three years of experience in the intern’s certification area, to support the intern throughout their training.

 Signed Mentor Teacher Agreement Form

 Verification of minimum class size in the area of certification

 Evidence of cultural diversity within the school population.

 A copy of the teaching schedule signed by the principal/assistant principal.

 A copy of the Signed Internship Agreement form.

 A copy of the contract or employment agreement after the internship has been approved.

To ensure compliance with certification requirements, it is essential to submit a signed copy of the teaching schedule from the principal or assistant principal Elementary and special education interns must instruct at the designated grade levels (Grades 1-5), while secondary majors are required to spend the majority of their teaching day in their specific area of certification.

 For internships outside of Southeastern’s service region, verification that a qualified external assessor will be assigned to assist the intern.

Candidates must submit all required documents as a complete packet in the semester before starting their internship Authorization for internship registration will only be granted once all documents are received.

Requirements to Receive the MAT Degree 14

To receive the Master of Arts in Teaching degree, a student must:

 Maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA with no grade below ‘C’ and not more than one “C” grade on graduate work

 Students will be permitted to enroll in any MAT course only twice (withdrawing counts).

 Students will be permitted to repeat only two MAT courses.

 Be recommended for the degree by the student’s major professor upon completion of all requirements stated in the degree plan.

To earn a concentration in elementary education for Grades 1-5 with an add-on in mild-moderate special education, students must satisfactorily complete 39 semester hours of graduate coursework Alternatively, those pursuing a concentration in secondary education are required to complete 36 semester hours of Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) graduate work.

 Satisfactorily complete and defend the program portfolio.

 Pass all required PRAXIS examinations.

Requirements for Certification 14

Southeastern Louisiana University will provide signed statements to the Louisiana Department of Education confirming that students who complete the Master of Arts in Teaching degree through the alternative certification path have fulfilled all necessary requirements.

 Pass the PPST/CBPPST components of Praxis I;

 Complete all coursework (master’s program) with an overall 3.0 or higher GPA;

 Pass the specialty examination (Praxis II) for the student’s area of certification.

1) For certification in elementary education pass the Elementary Education: Content

Knowledge exam #10014 For add-on certification in special education mild moderate pass the Education of Exceptional Students Core Content Knowledge #20353 and

Education of Exceptional Students Mild to Moderate Disabilities #10542 exams.

2) For secondary education majors, pass the specialty area Praxis II exam (refer to Appendix B).

The specialty areas of certification in Grades 6-12 are: biology and general science, business, chemistry, physics, and general science, English, French, home economics, mathematics, and social studies

Also, in agriculture, German, Latin, speech, and technology education which require 31hours of course work and current employment in the area of concentration.

To obtain certification, candidates must successfully pass the Praxis II examination in Principles of Learning and Teaching relevant to their grade level Additionally, students pursuing add-on certification in elementary and special education (mild/moderate) are required to complete two special education tests, unless they have already passed the PLT before June 1, 2004.

General Information

How to Drop or Add Courses 15

Please obtain a copy of the most current University Catalogue to follow the policies of the university regarding dropping and adding courses.

The terminology below is very important The time in which you drop, add, resign, or withdraw courses will affect your tuition reimbursement amount:

Drop: to withdraw from the course during the registration period (check dates on calendar) Add: to add a course during the registration period

Withdraw: to leave the course after classes begin (the later the withdrawal within specified dates, the less likely that tuition will be reimbursed)

Resign: to withdraw from all classes after classes begin

During the late registration period, students have the opportunity to drop and add courses as outlined in the University Calendar Dropping a course removes it from the student's record To withdraw from a course before the final withdrawal deadline, students must submit a signed Course Withdrawal Form to Enrollment Services or email the Office of Records and Registration with their request, including the course computer number and name Once the withdrawal is processed, a grade of "W" will be assigned for each course dropped For assistance, students can contact Enrollment Services at 985-549-5638 or via email at pfinch@selu.edu.

Textbook prices can vary significantly, and students have the option to purchase them through Southeastern's online bookstore at Efollett (http://www.efollett.com) or at the on-campus bookstore Additionally, the bookstore accepts phone orders and offers mail delivery for textbooks; students can call 985-549-5393 for assistance A comprehensive list of required textbooks can be found on the MAT webpage at www.selu.edu/mat.

11.3 Tuition Costs for In-state and Out of State Students

At Southeastern, tuition fees are based on the number of semester hours a student registers for Out-of-state graduate students taking up to 6 online semester hours can have their out-of-state fees waived To request a fee bill adjustment, contact the Controller’s Office at bschexnayder@selu.edu or call 985-549-2068 Tuition costs and fees vary each semester, so for the most accurate information, refer to the current fee schedule at http://www.selu.edu/Administration/Depts/Controller/.

Students applying for admission to a teacher education program at University of

Louisiana institutions are now required to adhere to stricter admission standards for the Praxis I PPST exam Beginning in summer 2004 for freshmen and summer 2005 for alternative certification students, applicants must achieve scores that are 2 points higher in reading, writing, and mathematics than the previous state minimum requirements The updated score thresholds are detailed in the accompanying chart.
