Midwest Regional Chapter Society of Toxicology Fall 2004 Newsletter The MRC/SOT Proudly Presents the Annual Fall Meeting scheduled for Friday, October 29, 2004: “Ocular Toxicology Advancements – Way Beyond Getting the Red Out” A common perception exists that a major arm of toxicology is still devoted to testing rabbits in primary ocular irritation studies – not so Advancements in ocular surgery and novel means of introducing ocular therapeutic agents locally to their site of action have spurred interest and the need for developing animal models of ocular disease, as well as techniques for determining whether such interventions are safe and effective for patients at risk for developing or already suffering visual impairment from chronic disease It is with great pleasure that we extend an invitation for you to join us for the upcoming Fall meeting of the Midwest Regional Chapter of the Society of Toxicology This meeting provides an opportunity to learn firsthand how ocular toxicology has advanced “Way Beyond Getting the Red Out” Speakers will address general ocular toxicology, ocular pathology, electrophysiological assessments of ocular function, techniques for assessing distribution of drugs following local application, and animal models of glaucoma Please join your colleagues at this year’s Fall meeting; it will be a stimulating and worthwhile experience! ~See inside for meeting details~ MRC/SOT Fall Meeting 2004 “Ocular Toxicology Advancements - Way Beyond Getting the Red Out” University of WisconsinMadison Registration & Lunch 11:30 am - 12:15 pm Distribution of Drugs in Ocular Tissue 2:00 pm – 2:45 pm Craig Struble, Ph.D Dept of Drug Metabolism Covance Laboratories Introduction and Announcements 12:15 pm - 12:25 pm Bruce Trela, Ph.D President, MRC/SOT Abbott Laboratories Refreshment Break 2:45 pm – 3:15 pm Symposium Introduction 12:25 pm - 12:30 pm Kevin Williams, Ph.D President-Elect, MRCSOT Covance Laboratories Ocular Pathology 3:15 pm – 4:00 pm Richard Dubielzig, D.V.M Department of Pathobiological Sciences School of Veterinary Medicine University of WisconsinMadison Glaucoma 12:30 pm - 1:15 pm Paul Miller, D.V.M Dept of Surgical Sciences School of Veterinary Medicine University of WisconsinMadison Ocular Toxicology 3:15 pm – 4:00 pm Janice Eells, Ph.D Dept of Pharmacology and Toxicology Medical College of Wisconsin Electrodiagnostics 1:15 pm - 2:00 pm Jim Ver Hoeve, Ph.D Dept of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Medical School Closing Remarks 4:00 PM Kevin Williams, Ph.D Reception/Exhibitor Displays 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM MEETING INFORMATION Directions to Conference Site: Site: Covance Laboratories 3301 Kinsman Boulevard Madison, WI 53704 (608) 241-4471 From the South (O’Hare International Airport) Take Ramp (RIGHT) onto I-190 towards I-190 (1.9 miles) At exit 1C, turn RIGHT onto Ramp towards I-294 / I-90 W / Milwaukee / Rockford (0.2 miles) Merge onto I-294 [Tri-State Tollway] (0.1 miles) Take Ramp (RIGHT) onto I-90 [Northwest Tollway] towards I-90 / N-W Tollway / Rockford (50.9 miles) Road name changes to I-39 [I-90] (14.4 miles) At exit 3, stay on I-39 [I-90] (North) (52.2 miles) At exit 138B, take Ramp (LEFT) onto SR-30 towards WI-30 / Madison (1.6 miles) Turn RIGHT onto Ramp towards US-51 / Stoughton Rd (0.2 miles) Keep RIGHT to stay on Ramp towards US-51 / Portage (0.1 miles) Bear RIGHT (North) onto US-51 [N Stoughton Rd] (1.1 miles) Turn LEFT (West) onto Local road(s) (< 0.1 miles) Road name changes to Anderson St (0.6 miles) Turn RIGHT (North) onto Pearson St (0.3 miles) Arrive 3301 Kinsman Blvd, Madison, WI 53704 Parking in front of the client entrance will be available The reception desk will provide visitors’ badges and direct attendees to the conference room From the East (Milwaukee) Take I-94 [US-41] West towards I-94 / US-41 / Madison (70.3 miles) Keep STRAIGHT onto Local road(s) (0.3 miles) At exit 4A, road name changes to SR-30 (1.4 miles) Turn RIGHT onto Ramp towards US-51 / Stoughton Rd (0.2 miles) (Continue as indicated above) For additional information, contact Kevin Williams at (608) 241-7287 Fees Regular Member: $25 conference Non-Member: $50 Full-Time Students: $10 Hotel Rooms Rooms are not being held for this Registration Form Return the form below with payment by 10/22/04 to: Linda Tam 1228 Sherwood Road Glenview, IL 60025 Registration will be permitted at the conference MRC/SOT 2004 Fall Meeting Registration Form Name _ MRC-SOT Member _Yes _No Title/Position/Company Phone Number E-mail address Address _ City State _ Zip *Make checks payable to MRC-SOT* Register by October 11, 2004 for a chance to win two tickets to the Northwestern vs Wisconsin Big Ten football game at Camp Randall Stadium (University of Wisconsin) on October 23, 2004! WE NEED YOUR HELP IN OBTAINING ESSENTIAL CORPORATE SUPPORT Since the MRC/SOT is a non-profit organization with a limited budget, we find it necessary to seek support for our activities from regional businesses and corporations with an interest in toxicology and teratology Registration fees alone cannot sustain the excellent scientific programs provided by the chapter without becoming prohibitive We need corporate support to offer the quality educational programs that are so important for professional growth in our field While many companies have often donated $1,000 or more, any contribution would be highly appreciated! Should you choose to so, a check (made out to MRC/SOT) can be sent to the address for meeting registration indicated above Contributions are accepted at any time during the year On behalf of the MRC/SOT Executive Council, I thank you for your interest and support! Linda Tam Treasurer of the MRC-SOT SAVE THE DATE FOR THE MRC/SOT SPRING MEETING! The MRC/SOT Spring meeting will be held on Friday, May 13, 2005. Keeping membership at the level that we are at requires a group effort Our Membership committee works hard to attract new members, but you can help by encouraging your colleagues to join as well Please take the time to copy the membership application and circulate it to colleagues whom you think would benefit from MRC/SOT membership EXISTING MEMBERS - REMEMBER TO RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP! For those of you who are already members, please renew promptly after receiving the renewal instructions; email renewal notifications will be arriving from national SOT soon National SOT members can simultaneously renew their MRC/SOT membership by simply checking an additional box on their renewal form and including their MRC/SOT dues with their national dues payment Membership can be renewed at any time by logging in to the national SOT website Credit cards are accepted on the website!
