November 11 Vintage Baseball in East Tennessee Adam Alfrey and Bob Gilbert Adam will share information about baseball in East Tennessee including the early formation of the first baseball team in the Knoxville area in 1867 Bob will share stories about baseball from a reporter’s perspective Vintage items will be on display from personal collections, Bob Gilbert will be available for book signings, and program attendees are invited to visit the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center’s current exhibit “Chasing Dreams: Baseball in East Tennessee” that will be on display through mid-January 2015 Bob Gilbert Bob Gilbert has been a journalist since 1955 working in newspaper, television and radio news in Tennessee and Kentucky He was sports editor of the MaryvilleAlcoa Daily Times in 1956-57, and was a political and sports writer for the Associated Press during the 1960s He served as the director of news operations with the University of Tennessee for 29 years He wrote a sports column for the Daily Times for 28 years that was named third best in the nation behind the Wall Street Journal and the Newark Star Ledger in 2008 Gilbert founded the Blount County Sports Hall of Fame and served as its executive director from 1997 to 2007 He has published several books, one of which is entitled “Maryville-Alcoa Twins 1953: A Baseball Memory” He currently resides in Maryville with his wife, Judy
