CPCU Society New Hampshire Chapter News and Views – Issue #1 September, 2010 President’s Message I hope you will take a few minutes to read our first newsletter Here you will find information on our 2010 – 2011 Chapter activities, a review of what we have been doing over the past year and our plans to make your Chapter useful to you We now have 160 members plus new designees being conferred for 2010 We recognize the importance of bringing resources to all of you Needs are different for our senior members, new members and those working towards their CPCU designation Each of you offers different ideas and skills The Board and Officers of your Chapter combine these ideas and work to create a diverse calendar of events The feedback we’ve received tells us your focus is on education, some fun and networking We think we are meeting your expectations and encourage you to tell us when we are on target or off the mark We need your assistance to accomplish our goals, so don’t be surprised if we call to ask you for your involvement If you believe that you get what you give, then please speak with any of your Officers or Board on how you can improve your career skills of leadership, planning, team building or mentoring by being an active participant in your Chapter I can attest that volunteering for the Chapter is a fun, worthwhile benefit which is fully supported by the majority of employers out there Please consider this opportunity to expand your horizon See you at our next meeting! Patty Patricia Smith, CPCU, ARM, AAI, CSRM _Soc iety of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters–New Hampshire Chapter Newsletter Chapter Awarded the Society’s 2009-2010 Gold Circle of Excellence Award The New Hampshire Chapter has again been recognized by the CPCU Society for its comprehensive member and community service program This is the fourth consecutive year that our Chapter has been awarded the Gold Circle of Excellence Award The Chapter will be recognized for its achievement at the Society’s Annual Meeting and Seminars in Orlando later this month While the recognition is important and certainly most welcome and appreciated, it is the execution of our plan to “Spread the Word” and offer value to our members that brings the most satisfaction Thanks to Kerry McGrath and everyone involved in making 2009-2010 such a success… and now let’s strive for five in a row NH Chapter to Participate in Society’s Student Outreach Scholarship Program Late this summer, the CPCU Society established a student scholarship program designed to attract young people to our industry The Society is encouraging and financially assisting 25 junior and senior university insurance/risk management students to attend the CPCU Society Annual Meeting and Seminars in Orlando The Society will sponsor the students for their registration fees and local chapters have been asked to step forward to help defray student travel and hotel expenses Your Board has responded to this request and will join at least 28 other chapters around the country and overseas by contributing $250 to cover one student’s expenses The NH Chapter will receive special recognition for its support at the annual meeting 2010-2011 Chapter Goals Set at Planning Meeting On July 27, 2010 the New Hampshire Chapter of the Society of CPCU Officers and Board Members met in Bow, NH to set goals for the 2010-2011 chapter year The following goals were established: Seek Society of CPCU Circle of Excellence recognition for the NH Chapter at the Gold level for a fifth consecutive year Increase CE Education events offered by the Chapter during the year from three (3) to four (4) Implement a New Designee/Candidate Chapter Engagement Program Introduce a Chapter Mentor Program Introduce a Perfect Attendance Recognition Program _Soc iety of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters–New Hampshire Chapter Newsletter 2009 - 2010 The Year in Review The Chapter year just ending was indeed a busy year for all As evidenced by our Gold Circle of Excellence award, our programs came in all shapes and sizes and were designed to engage and support as many members as possible In September, 25 members participated in recognizing our new designees, of whom were in attendance at the event Our CPCU Society Governor, Rick Brisee was on hand to conduct the Conferment ceremony Each new designee received a CPCU pin compliments of the NH Chapter November saw two breakfast meetings with NH Insurance Commissioner Roger A Sevigny, one in Portsmouth and the other in Concord A total of 59 CPCU’s attended these meetings which were jointly sponsored by the NH Chapter of CPCU and the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of New Hampshire Three separate education events were sponsored during the Chapter year Ably coordinated by 2009 Chapter President Elect and Education Chairman Christy Dolat Bartlett, CE classes were held on Toxic Mold, Boiler and Machinery/Equipment Breakdown and Insurance Valuation A total of 69 people attended these events, 28 of whom had their CPCU designation Other events included: *Attendance of 20 for our December Holiday Social with Matthew Lupa, the Director of Insurance/Risk Management for Raytheon Company *Our annual ski day networking event held in February at Loon Mountain with 24 attending to hear a presentation by New England Disabled Sports *Election of officers and presentation by National Flood Program Regional Manager Robert Desaulniers in May with 22 attending *Summer Outing and conferment of 2010-11 NH Chapter Officers meeting held at a NH Fisher Cats game which was enjoyed by 26 attendees at Merchants Field in Manchester Our Good Works project involved collection of donated food and money for the New Hampshire Food Bank at most of our meetings The New Hampshire Food Bank is grateful for your contributions throughout the year and has extended their thanks to us for each donation The Chapter also continued to provide a contribution to the CPCU – Loman Education Foundation The Loman Foundation provides funding for speakers at the Annual Meeting and Seminars It also provides matching funds to the CPCU scholarship programs for the study of insurance _Soc iety of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters–New Hampshire Chapter Newsletter 2010-2011 2010-2011 Chapter Program Defined The 2010-2011 NH Chapter program is again designed to involve the Chapter in the community and industry , support new members, provide networking opportunities and provide expanded continuing education offerings Please put these dates on your calendar so you don’t miss out on the opportunity to attend We will continue to communicate with you as we firm up locations and speakers 2010-2011 Proposed Program October CE Program: USL&H - Coverage, Adjustment Practices, Defenses, Bedford, NH October and November Dates To Be Determined: Breakfast with the Insurance Commissioner November New Designee Local Conferment Event, Bedford Village Inn December Professional Development Speaker Meeting January 12 Concord, NH CE Program: The Dirty Dozen; 12 External Factors Impacting Insurance Contracts , February 5th Annual Ski Day March Nomination and Election of Officers April 12 Officer Installation, Breakfast Meeting Bedford Village Inn May 12 CE Program: Contractual Risk Transfer: Nuts and Bolts June 14 Chapter Planning Meeting for Officers and Board To be scheduled: CE Program: Ethical Decisions _Soc iety of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters–New Hampshire Chapter Newsletter Featured Program – Chapter Mentor Program In an effort to encourage candidates for the CPCU designation and new designee participation in the NH Chapter, the Chapter will solicit volunteers to serve as mentors of these individuals The use of mentors for new designees and candidates is intended to likely make the candidates and new designees feel more welcome and involved in the Chapter The mentor role will include routinely contacting the mentee(s) regarding chapter activities, facilitating connections to others in the Chapter and in the industry, and serving as a resource to the mentee Mentor volunteers are needed and ideas are welcome, please contact any of your Officers or Board Upcoming Events, see included announcements for details October CE Seminar: USL&H - NH CPCU Chapter USL&H Seminar Tuesday October 5, 2010 Program: USL&H – Coverage, Adjustment Practices, Defenses Instructor: Stephen Hessert, Maritime Attorney from NORMAN, HANSON & DeTROY When does the State act for Workers’ Compensation apply versus USL&H? If you are expecting the State act and the Admiralty statute is applied, there are several things you will want to know to be sure your adjuster is managing the claim in the most cost effective manner The stakes can be high and the usual tools available within the State Act may be helpful but not when you fully understand all the reimbursable costs available to the claimant This program will cover the USL&H Act, it’s components, adjustment practices, jurisdictional nuances (you will be surprised), and the significant cost implications associated with such a claim Given all the State jurisdictional precedent cases, why we even need USL&H?
