2 Product Definition

BilGreen Company is a consultancy company, which finds green energysolutions to its customers One product of BilGreen Company is GUS (GreenUniversity Solutions) This product is prepared for university campuses This productconsists of creating energy solutions, making feasibility study of these solutions andconstructing some demonstrators to prove the effectiveness of some solutions Thestructure of GUS is designed like that:

 The physical features of the university campus is examined The convenienceof campus to the usage of solar energy, wind energy, etc is searched If it

Trang 7

seems that the construction of solar or wind energy is appropriate, then ademonstrator will be constructed

 The current energy source of the campus is analyzed It is searched thatwhether there can be more efficient energy source in both economical andenvironmental aspect, or not.

 The energy lost of the campus is examined The buildings, the vehicles whichhave been using at the campus can cause energy loses These factors aresearched and some solutions about these are found.

It is obvious that GUS is a special product It is designed uniquely to itscustomers Therefore, it cannot be possible to give general product definitions Inorder to give an idea about the products of BilGreen Company, one product of thecompany can be explained as an example The features of other products can betaught by regarding the features of one product Therefore, the product GUS-1 isexplained as a prototype of the products of the company.

GUS-1 is the first product of BilGreen Company It is designed for BilkentUniversity campus The structure of the GUS-1 is designed like that:

 The physical features of the Bilkent University campus is examined BilkentUniversity is in Ankara Therefore, the solar and wind statistics of Ankara areglanced, in order to find the convenience of campus to the usage of solarenergy, wind energy

The solar statistics of Ankara[1]:

Trang 8

With the help of this pre-research, it is seen that solar energy can be anenergy option Therefore, one part of GUS-1 is the feasibility of solar energy atBilkent University campus In addition, construction of a solar panel demonstrator is agood way to analyze the appropriateness of solar energy Therefore, construction ofa solar panel demonstrator is a part of GUS-1.

The wind energy potential map of Ankara [2]:

Depending on the capacity of the generator, the electricity obtained is around3.2 kW, when the wind speed is around 20 m/sec In Ankara, the average windspeed is between 4 and 5 m/sec As a result the wind speed will be 20-25% of theoptimal value of 20 m/sec, which means that the efficiency of the solution will be 20-25% The solution has an extremely low feasibility Therefore, according to this pre-research, GUS-1 does not contain wind energy study.

 The current energy source of the Bilkent University is analyzed and it is seenthat BilEnerji Company supplies the energy demand of the campus There isco-generation at the campus BilEnerji firstly provides electricity to thecampus Secondly the steam of the facilities is used for heating all thebuildings at the campus of Bilkent University It is seen that this co-generationunit both provides electricty and heating needs and it is very efficient energysource Therefore, GUS-1 does not contain a different energy sourceresearch.

Trang 9

 The energy lost of the campus is examined Firstly, BilGreen Company gotinformation from Construction Unit of Bilkent University It was seen that only 5buildings out of 53 buildings have exterior thermal sheathing In addition, it isalso roughly searched that in Ankara total heating need for a 5 stroyed (eachstorey is 180 m2) apartment which does not have an exterior thermalsheathing is 88.2 kW When this building has an exterior thermal insulation, then the total heating need decreases to 32.2 kW It means that there can be50%- 70% energy storage with the help of exterior thermal insulation. Therefore, the feasibility study of exterior thermal insulation should be one partof GUS-1.

Another energy issue at campus is about the university transportation system.University provides free transportation in campus and from campus to city center Allof the buses work with petroleum, and it causes a lot of CO2 emission Therefore, this transportation system can be improved in order to help climate change issue atthe campus One solution is found about the issue The solution is related withBilEnerji Company It was mentioned before that BilEnerji provides electricity to theuniversity There is a thermal power plant at the campus It is known that thermalpower plants cannot be stopped according to energy needs It always supplies sameamount of energy On the other hand, at nights people do not use much energy. Therefore, there is an energy gap between the produced and the consumed energy. In fact, this extra capacity is used to sell electricity to main power grid in Ankara atnights However, this capacity can be used for more an efficient way Our companyproposed that the extra capacity of BilEnerji Company can be used to charge electricschool buses It can both provide green transportation and economical profit. Therefore, the green transportation feasibility study is also a part of GUS-1.

In brief, GUS-1 consists of these: The feasibility study of solar energy

 The feasibility study of exterior thermal insulation The feasibility study of green transportation The construction of a solar power demonstrator

3 Preliminary Design

3.1 Product Tree

3.2 Main Blocks of the Product Tree

Our product GUS-1 mainly consists of 3 parts:

 Green Transportation:

It is a feasibility study for Bilkent University transportation system

University provides free transportation in campus and from campus to city center. All of the buses work with petroleum, and it causes a lot of CO2 emission. Therefore, this transportation system can be improved in order to help climatechange issue at the campus One solution is found about the issue The solutionis related with BilEnerji Company It was mentioned before that BilEnerji provideselectricity to the university There is a thermal power plant at the campus It isknown that thermal power plants cannot be stopped according to energy needs Italways supplies same amount of energy On the other hand, at nights people donot use much energy Therefore, there is an energy gap between the producedand the consumed energy In fact, this extra capacity is used to sell electricity tomain power grid in Ankara at nights However, this capacity can be used for morean efficient way Our company proposed that the extra capacity of BilEnerjiCompany can be used to charge electric school buses By this way, greentransportation can be gotten In addition, the feasibility study of greentransportation contains also economic side of this issue The study includes theelectricity price forecast and petroleum price forecast in the future In brief, itcontains the profit evaluation for the usage of green transportation in the future.

 Exterior Thermal Insulation:

It is a feasibility study for the buildings without exterior thermal insulation in BilkentUniversity campus.

Trang 11

BilGreen Company got information from Construction Unit of Bilkent Universityand it was seen that only 5 buildings out of 53 buildings have exterior thermalsheathing In addition, it is roughly searched that in Ankara total heating need fora 5 stroyed (each storey is 180 m2) apartment which does not have an exteriorthermal sheathing is 88.2 kW When this building has an exterior thermalinsulation, then the total heating need decreases to 32.2 kW It means that therecan be 50%-70% energy storage with the help of exterior thermal insulation. Therefore, this feasibility study contains how much energy will be gained, if thebuildings are insulated Moreover, it will provide the economic search about theissue.

 The construction of a solar power demonstrator:

It is the only tangible part of the product The solar panel demonstrator is constructed to examine the convinience of solar energy usage at Bilkent Univeristy campus With the help of this demonstrator, the amount of energy gotten by solar panel is gotten This data is the most valid information to make the analysis of the solar energy convinience.

3.3 The Relationship between The Blocks

GUS-1 is divided into 3 separate parts These parts are separated from eachother; there is no exact connection between these blocks On the other hand, all

Trang 12

three parts is united at energy issue The aim of all of these different 3 blocks is toanalyze the solutions for the greener university campus.

3.4 Components of Product

As mentioned before, the only tangible part of the product is the solar panelconstruction Therefore, only this part’s components are explained as thecomponents of the product.

3.4.1 Solar Panel

Solar panels consist of different number of solar cells Power produced from solarcells changes according to the number and quality of solar cells in the solar panel. The energy generated from photons striking the surface of the solar panel allowselectrons to be knocked out of their orbits and released, and electric fields in thesolar cells pull these free electrons in a directional current, from which metal contactsin the solar cell can generate electricity

3.4.2 Charge Regulator

Charge regulator controls the power going to battery Charge regulator preventsdeep discharging and overcharging This helps increase the life time of the batteries.Charge regulators function with 12 or 24 V threshold and this changes according tothe choice of battery.

3.4.3 Battery

Stores the power produced in day time Different varieties of batteries are available. We plan to choose a battery whose gas output is negligible since the other onesrequire a special battery room.

3.4.4 Invertor

Power is stored in battery as DC, however most of the electronic devices uses AC.Invertors supplies us this function They have security systems against high and lowvoltage, high temperature, high charge and also protects electronic devices againstthese issues.
