Montgomery College Rockville – SEM Students Participating in Prestigious REUs this Summer Eight MC engineering students are participating this summer across prestigious REU programs across the nation The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel Liliane Nguetsap is an electrical engineering major and has been accepted into the University of Maryland College Park MERIT Biosystems Internships for Engineers (BIEN) summer research program (http://www.ece.umd.edu/merit/08_projects.html) She working in the MicroElectro-Mechanical System (MEMS) Sensors and Actuators Lab (MSAL) led by Prof Reza Ghodssi The research project entitled Nanostructured Nickel-Zinc Microbatteries Using Tobacco Mosaic Virus is investigating novel approaches for the development of micro-batteries based on the well studied Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) Liliane will transfer to UMCP this fall to pursue a BS in electrical engineering Solomon Adera majored in aerospace engineering at MC and transferred to Georgia Institute of Technology this year to pursue a BS in mechanical engineering He has accepted an REU at Texas A&M University for this summer Solomon will be working on a project in the Turbomachinery lab sponsored by NASA Glenn Research Center (http://reumicro.tamu.edu/project/project08.html) The High temperature Foil Bearings for Micro Gas Turbines project includes construction, trouble shooting and operation of a high speed, high temperature test rig for evaluation of rotordynamic performance of gas foil bearings to be applied on the hot side of micro gas turbines Semme Yilma is pursuing a civil engineering degree and has been selected for a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) He will work in the Building and Fire Research Laboratory (BFRL) at NIST this summer (http://www.bfrl.nist.gov/info/surf/surf.htm) Semme was also offered REUs by University of Maryland College Park and the University of Notre Dame Calvin Chung has been admitted for an REU with the Institute of Systems Research (ISR) at A James Clark School of Engineering (UMCP) this summer (http://www.isr.umd.edu/research/REU.htm) His research emphasis will be in five major topics: global communications systems, sensor-actuator networks, next-generation product realization systems, societal infrastructure systems, and cross-disciplinary systems education The ISR seeks a balanced, integrated approach to the design and control of large, heterogeneous systems, bringing together a diversified team of outstanding engineers, scientists, and students to research, develop, and implement advances in systems engineering Cillian Jenkins is a civil engineering major and has an internship with the Institute of Global Environment and Society (IGES) at the Center for Research on the Environment and Water (CREW) He anticipates participating in ongoing research programs (http://crew.iges.org/research/) supporting NASA’s Energy and Water Cycle Study Suchit Bhattarai is an electrical engineering major and has been admitted for an REU with the Institute of Systems Research (ISR), at A James Clark School of Engineering (UMCP) this summer (http://www.isr.umd.edu/research/REU.htm) He will be interning at the ISR for 10 weeks during summer, 2008 William Acevedo is a mechanical engineering major and has been accepted for a summer internship with NIST Omoniyi Obashe is an electrical engineering major and has been accepted for an REU at Georgia Tech ...
