FOREWORD
“Since those heady DM years, I have concentrated fully on my once side project Recoil (which originated in
1986). The most signicant work has evolved since 1996. Free from former commitments, I began operating
from my own studio, ‘The Thin Line’, and at my own pace, gradually piecing together what would become the
‘Unsound Methods’, ‘Liquid’ and ‘subHuman’ albums. Over the course of the last 12 years I have been ably ac-
companied by Paul Kendall who brings his idiosyncratic view to the whole procedure.
The recent ‘Selected’ collection is made up of my personal favourites, remastered and edited together into
what I consider a cohesive and total listening experience. The idea to take the project out on the road evolved
as we started discussing promotion and I realised that I wanted to do something more challenging this time.
The events were not so much ‘live’ band but more art installation. Paul and I just extended what we do in the
studio into the live setting where we add spontaneous eects and extra parts to a pre-prepared bedrock. For ‘A
Strange Hour’, I turned to various lmmakers from as far as Russia, via the Czech Republic and Hungary, all the
way to Argentina. We worked very fast, and in the modern way, by creating a central server where everybody
could upload their work for others to see, react to and feedback on. This for me typies the whole essence
of what Recoil is all about - a collective but with a focused direction - and a very thrilling process it was too,
watching and hearing it all come together from our base in the UK. We spent most of 2010 bringing Recoil to a
worldwide live audience for the very rst time.
One of my new year’s resolutions for 2011 was to start streamlining my set-up at The Thin Line Studios. My
needs have altered a bit since laptops, so synths and plug-ins have come to the fore, and even though I’m
emotionally attached, passing on some vintage gear and historical items seemed like a good way to start. Since
my teenage years I’ve been an avid collector of interesting and unique musical instruments, including a ‘Stein-
way’ Grand piano, vintage keyboards, synthesisers such as the ‘Mini-moog’, ‘Arp Odyssey’, a ‘Wurlitzer’ electric
piano, plus ‘Manley’ valve amps, valve-driven ‘Telefunken’ amps and a ‘Manley’ limiter/compressor. There is one
very special guitar and various ‘Emulators’ which were featured during theMode tours, and I even have my old
stage clothing, touring wardrobe, the ‘Devotional’ drum kit, drumming extras and other artefacts available.
I also decided that, since I was having a clear out, why not include some extra memorabilia and pass on some
of the stu I have collected over the years – the additional memorabilia such as Gold & Platinum award discs,
leather clothing, rare acetates & test pressings, artwork, posters and tour merchandise covers my entire musi-
cal career, focusing mainly on the years between 1982 & 1995.
I found it an evocative and cathartic experience to si through all the collectables - the actual sorting and
cataloguing process brought back great memories and I was able to re-live some key moments which I had
inevitably forgotten about, reminding me of how lucky I have been to have enjoyed such a career, doing some-
thing I’m passionate about. My team and I spent weeks scouring the web, my own archives, photographs and
diary entries, plus anything else we could nd to make the descriptions as detailed and accurate as possible.
Many items are very collectable and hold special value having been used extensively in the recording sessions
for classic Depeche Mode and Recoil albums, as well as live performances on the ‘Black Celebration’, ‘Music For
The Masses’, ‘World Violation’ and ‘Devotional’ tours.
Finally, I have managed to forge a great relationship with Omega in order to create an all-inclusive fan-friendly
event, incorporating a lm presentation (‘Alan Wilder - Collected’) about the fascinating history of everything
in the sale, a workshop and Q&A session with myself & Paul Kendall, plus some other surprises. I hope you’ll
agree that this all makes for something quite unique. I think you will enjoy what’s on oer and good luck with
your bidding!
HISTORY - ALAN WILDER
Aer classical training from an early age, Alan Wild-
er’s career in music began at the age of 16 when he
secured the position of studio assistant at DJM Studi-
os in London’s West End. Following 3 years of moder-
ate success in a variety of dierent bands, he joined
Depeche Mode in 1981 aer replying to an advert in
Melody Maker.
Depeche Mode’s trademark sound has earned them
worldwide success and been credited by industry and
media alike as a prominent and distinctive inuence
on the development of the electronic and dance mu-
sic movements. Alan Wilder’s training and studio ex-
perience made him a vital player in this success and
his mantle as DM’s ‘musical director’ has long been
acknowledged throughout the music industry.
The band’s steady rise from synth pop ‘teeny bop-
pers’ to chart-topping stadium act was dramatically
demonstrated in 1989 with their sell-out ‘Concert For
The Masses’ show to 80,000 people at The Rosebowl stadium in Pasadena (the culmination of a 101- date world
tour) and their popularity further elevated the following year, when approximately 20,000 fans attempted to
gain entrance to Wherehouse Records in Los Angeles to see their heroes sign copies of the new record ‘Violator’.
A riot spilled out onto the streets and the LAPD, who were called out in full force, described the incident (which
made news worldwide) as comparable to a presidential visit.
The Mode embarked on their most adventurous tour to date in 1993, enduring a gruelling 15 months on the
road to promote their 8th studio album ‘Songs Of Faith And Devotion’. Following this globally successful outing
and well-publicised problems within the internal workings of the band, Alan Wilder decided to leave Depeche
Mode in 1995.

See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details. Estimate £60 - £100
6 SAMPLER - Akai S-612 Digital sampler & Akai MD-280 Disc drive - Sampler serial number: 00650-20884. Condition: function-
al (samples and plays back). Includes set of 20-30 factory, self-made sample discs & power supply cable. In production 1985-86.
Disk drive serial number: 01120-00210. Condition: good, a few scratches/marks. The drive powers up but doesn't always load prop-
erly. Ideally main drive band for spindle needs replacement. In production 1985-86. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan's comments: “This is a period piece and has value as a novelty collector’s item. I can remember sitting with Daniel Miller in the mid-
80s ddling with it and feeling both bemused and excited by how quickly we could truncate and loop a sound to create immediate unusual
eects, the kind we hadn’t heard before when using a sample as a source. It’s low- quality gave it an other-worldly quality. The discs
which I have thrown in include quite a few factory supplied samples as well as some home made sounds.” Estimate £100 - £150
7 SAMPLER - Akai S1000 Digital sampler - Serial number: 89255-00233. In very good condition, fully functional. Includes Version 2.0
soware disc, operation manual & power supply cable. Dates produced: 1988-1993. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan's comments: “The entire Akai sampler range, starting with the S1000 and then S1100 and S3000 was used extensively on DM and
Recoil albums. They appear all over ‘Violator’, ‘SOFAD, ‘Unsound Methods’ and others. Flood was a big fan. In particular, many of the
famous ‘Violator’ and ‘SOFAD’ drums were sampled using the Akai which was particularly good at stacking and triggering sounds tightly
(much better than the Emulators which took a back seat around this time)." Estimate £150 - £200
8 SAMPLER - Akai S1100 Digital sampler (16Mb) - Serial number: 50855-00316. Very good condition, fully functional. Includes operation
manual & power supply cable. For Alan's comments see lot 7 or see www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Estimate £200 - £300
9 SAMPLER - Akai S3000XL Digital sampler (32Mb) - Serial number: C9655-00237. In excellent condition, fully functional. Includes opera-
tion manual & power supply cable. Dated 1996. For Alan's comments see lot 7 or see www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Estimate £200 - £300
11 SYNTHESISER - Arp Odyssey Mk 111 - Model 2821 Synthesiser - Serial number: 28210651. In very good condition, fully functional (re-
cently tested). Includes operation manual, Patch book, Midi interface instructions & power supply cable. Dates from circa 1978, USA. Midi
retro upgrade tted by Kenton, Surrey, UK. As the legendary rst compact studio synthesiser, the Minimoog, proved to be a runaway suc-
cess, ARP responded with a compact user-friendly studio synthesiser of their own with the Odyssey. An almost equally legendary machine
itself (the Odyssey was ARP’s highest selling synth), it essentially oers you a somewhat scaled-down & hard-wired ARP 2600 in a much
smaller and more aordable package. The Odyssey is a 2-oscillator analog synth (with duo-phonic capability). It comes well equipped
with all the features one would expect: resonant low pass lter, ADSR envelopes, sine or square wave LFO and even a sample-and-hold
function. It also added a few new features such as a high pass lter in series with the low pass, oscillator-sync capability and pulse-width
modulation. It is a very professional and expressive machine that can create nice analog basses, interesting leads and great eects and
sweeping sounds or noises.
Technical spec: Odyssey III - Models 2820-2823 were produced from 1976-81 and featured the new Model 4075 lter design. In addition
to its 1/4” outputs, XLR outputs have been added. The rest of its specications are virtually identical to the Odyssey Mk II except that the
overall look and quality were further updated to with the orange & black color-scheme. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan’s comments: “I bought the ARP in the late 70s privately in London and it featured on quite a few of my pre-Mode recordings with
various bands. I guess I always had a so spot for the Minimoog but once you accepted that the Arp was never going to sound as ‘fat’ and
realised that it could be used as a completely dierent kind of tool, then it came into its own. Midi upgrades were added later when I used
the Arp on some of the earlier Recoil recordings such as ‘Hydrology’ and ‘Bloodline’. I can’t pretend I was ever a skilled operator (unlike
Daniel Miller for example) but it is certainly a lot of fun to ddle about with.” Estimate £600 - £1000
14 MICROPHONES - C - Ducer: APT (Audio Percussion Trigger) unit & 2 x C - Ducer Tape microphones - Serial number: APT208. Good condi-
tion, fully functional. Includes carrying case, operation manual, power supply & cable. Made in UK circa 1985.
See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details. Estimate £250 - £350
17 OUTBOARD FX - Drawmer DL221 Dual compressor/limiter - Industry standard dual mono/stereo compressor/limiter, widely used since
the mid 1980s. Serial number: 2337. In very good condition, fully functional. Includes operation manual.
See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details. Estimate £200 - £300
18 OUTBOARD FX - Drawmer DS201 Dual gate - Serial number: 7165. In very good condition, fully functional.

19 OUTBOARD FX - Drawmer DS201 Dual gate - Serial number: 3838. In very good condition, fully functional.
Includes operation manual & power supply cable. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details. Estimate £200 - £300
20 OUTBOARD FX - Drawmer DS201 Dual gate - Serial number: 4908. In very good condition, fully functional.
Includes operation manual & power supply cable. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details. Estimate £200 - £300
21 ‘PEARL’ DRUM TRIGGER PADS - Includes: 4 x drum trigger pads, 2 x Pearl stands, 2 x pairs Aquarian graphite drumsticks (2B) (signed,
unused) & 2 x pairs (used) Zildjian drumming gloves. All in good condition, fully functional. Extra info: Release: Japan pat: 1522359, US
pat: 4141272. Made in US by Davz. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan’s comments: “These drum pads were used to perform the rhythm parts to ‘Personal Jesus’ plus a few other songs during the ‘World
Violation’ and ‘Devotional’ tours. The pads were custom mounted on the ‘Pearl’ stands and I would have these set up next to the drum kit
(or keyboard) for the relevant numbers.” Estimate £500 - £700
22 SAMPLER - Drumulator - Model 7000 Drum machine - Serial number: 338. Condition: visually excellent but not currently functional
(the power supply hums, so could be easy to x). Includes original ight case & power supply cable. Manufactured by Emu Systems Inc.,
USA. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan's comments: “As used on ‘Construction Time Again’ - its sounds are all over that album. Listen to ‘Everything Counts’ , Something
To Do’ or ‘Told You So’ for example to hear the character of this machine which preceded the famous Linn drum. It was very simple to
use and featured it’s own sequencer. It’s very disappointing to me that I couldn’t get it to respond when I tried it recently but I’m assured
that it is easily repairable. Again, it’s value is more historical, as a collector’s item.” Estimate £200 - £300
27 SAMPLER - Emax Turbo II Model 2205 - 16 bit sampler keyboard & set of discs - Serial number: 0300510. Condition: Visu-
ally very good, fully functional with newly tted hard drive. Includes: 'Bulldog' tour ight case with compartments for discs and
extras, 30 pre-loaded sound banks for tracks played on 'Music for the Masses' and 'Devotional' tours, 21 x 3.5-inch dual-sided op-
py discs each containing keyboard sample patches which Alan used during the ‘Music For The Masses’ tour in 1988, 60 x sound
patch discs containing many factory and self-made sounds (examples: Harp/Karplus Strings, Rock Guitar, Grand Piano, Elec-
tric Bass, etc.). In addition, a laminated 'Devotional' tour set list, operations manual & power supply cable. Manufactured by Emu
Systems Inc., USA. More detail is available for this lot via Omega Auctions or see www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan's comments: “What can one say about the Emulator range? Used so much on DM recordings and on stage between 1983 and
1994, they were probably the most versatile of samplers from the 1980s. From the very rst Emulator 1, I have used them all and been
captivated by sampling technology ever since. I remember when we rst inserted the huge oppy disc into the Emu 1 and listened to
the ‘Motorbike Idling’ sound (which later became the mainstay rhythm behind the song ‘Stripped’), I was hooked. All over ‘Construction
Time Again’ you can hear the Emulator with it’s grainy 8bit samples (later improved on other models of course). Think of the intro to
‘Everything Counts’ for example, and then most of the other sounds within the song as well, such as the main ri. Of course, I couldn’t
list all the songs the Emulators have been used on suce it to say that, compared to the vastly complicated Synclavier (which did sound
amazing), the Emulator was almost always the sampler of choice. We continued to use them extensively on ‘Some Great Reward’, ‘Black
Celebration’, ‘Music For the Masses’,‘Violator’ and ‘SOFAD’. As each model appeared, we acquired one (or several) right up to the E111 and
the Emax for live use. They could prove troublesome on stage, the Emax being by far the only fairly reliable model for that purpose, and
they haven't really stood the test of time, with power supplies and mother boards having blown along the way. The Emax was featured
in the D.A Pennebaker lm ‘101‘ for the sequence where I describe how it works. This one is the actual machine used on the ‘Devotional’
tour. As mentioned, it is fully functional and has the live sounds internally programmed as well as a laminated set list attached to it. The
collection of oppies which accompany it, in some ways is even more interesting, containing as they do all the sounds and patches for
my performances during the ‘Music For The Masses’ tour, as well as a large library of factory and self-made sounds. So if you want to see
exactly how it was all done, here’s your chance.”
Estimate £2500 - £3000
28 SAMPLER - Emulator II Model 6028 8 bit sampler, plus set of Recoil/DM performance oppy discs & large sample library collection (total
121 discs) - Serial number: 1099. Condition: fully working & recently serviced by James Walker (Vintage Synth Service Centre) & Paul Nash.
Visually very good with brand new LCD display tted. Includes power supple cable & case with 121 oppy discs. Manufactured by Emu Systems
Inc., USA. The Emulator 11 is the sampler on which the very rst Recoil recording ‘1+2’ was entirely composed. Included with the Emulator II are
121 x 5"" oppy discs, each containing unique library samples and original Recoil patches. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan's comments: “What can one say about the Emulator range? Used so much on DM recordings and on stage between 1983 and 1994,
they were probably the most versatile of samplers from the 1980s. From the very rst Emulator 1, I have used them all and been cap-
tivated by sampling technology ever since. I remember when we rst inserted the huge oppy disc into the Emu 1 and listened to the
‘Motorbike Idling’ sound (which later became the mainstay rhythm behind the song ‘Stripped’), I was hooked. All over ‘Construction Time

live use. They could prove troublesome on stage, the Emax being by far the only fairly reliable model for that purpose. My machines are all
cosmetically in excellent condition and the E11 has now been repaired, with new power supply and LCD display to make it fully functional.
Most appealing here is the collection of discs containing all kinds of interesting things. This Emulator 11 is the sampler on which the very
rst Recoil recording ‘1+2’ was entirely composed. I even used its internal sequencer for that EP, and you might just nd that the ‘Recoil
4’ disc plays back the very sequence used in the original recording. I also found DM’s ‘Christmas Island’, ‘Shake The Disease’ and there are
other DM gems too:)”
Estimate £2000 - £3000
29 SAMPLER - Emulator III Digital sampler keyboard & set of discs - Serial number: (Hard drive model ST - 251N) 00685414. Condition:
cosmetically excellent although in need of repair and service. Includes power supply cable and hard drive (separated). Manufactured by
Emu Systems Inc., USA. It features a standard 3.25” oppy disk drive, a 16-channel sequencer, a fast processor, an internal 40 Mb hard
disk, 16-voice polyphony and a SCSI interface to allow the connection of an external hard disk or CD-ROM player. The lters are still ana-
logue lters, hence the sampler’s ‘warm’ sound. The keyboard also has aertouch. The Emulator range was used on Depeche Mode record-
ings and on stage between 1983 and 1994. Also included a set of 75 x 3.5inch oppy discs containing factory samples.
See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Estimate £400 - £600
30 SAMPLER - Emulator 6400 ‘Ultra’ Digital sampler - Serial number: 039967118 (6842). Condition: Excellent, fully functional but no inter-
nal drive (works via SCSI with external drive). Includes operation manual, power supply, soware version 4.0e, 64 channel card and 128Mb
internal sound memory. The Emulator range was used on Depeche Mode recordings and on stage between 1983 and 1994.
See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Estimate £300 - £400
33 KEYBOARD - Packard Organ (Harmonium) Model 374 - Serial number: 85064. In excellent condition, fully functional. Includes opera-
tion manual & framed original warranty certicate with serial number & model number. Manufactured by The Packard Company, Indiana,
USA. Dates from circa 1890-1900. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan's comments: “A harmonium such as this was used to create the alternative version of 'Enjoy The Silence' (L12 BONG 18) - featur-
ing just Harmonium and voice, it formed the basis of Martin's original demo for the song, before we turned it into a disco stomper! I
purchased the ‘Packard ‘ organ about 15 years ago from an antiques market in Sussex, UK. I don’t really know the full history of this
particular instrument but when I saw it, I just had to have it. I was transported back to my youth when I would spend weekends at my
Aunt Flo’s house just o the Harrow Rd in London. She owned a very similar organ which was kept in her bathroom and I would spend
hours up there intoxicated by the strange and wonderful machine, experimenting with the stops, discovering the unique creaking
breathy sound of the old beast and trying to imagine who could have invented such a contraption. I’m loath to part with this ne exam-
ple but space is needed and I have had many hours of enjoyment already, and plenty of sing songs when people have visited and been
intrigued. It is quite hard work keeping pumping away with the feet while you play but the up side is a great work-out for the old calves
and thighs!”
Estimate £600 - £1000
34 ‘KNIGHT’ GRETSCH ANNIVERSARY GUITAR - as used by Martin Gore (Depeche Mode) - Colour: lime green. Serial number: unknown. In
excellent condition, fully functional. Manufactured by: David Knight (based on Gretsch). Includes 'Bulldog' Depeche Mode ight case and
a signed letter of authentication from Alan.
A close listen to every Depeche Mode album from 1987’s ‘Music for the Masses’ onward reveals an increasingly signicant role for
6-strings, including the cleanly plucked harmonics and swinging, half-Johnny Cash/half-Goth acoustic ri that drove 1990’s ‘Personal
Jesus’ and the glorious Gretsch tones that highlighted ‘Enjoy The Silence’. In fact, although guitar rarely commands the spotlight in the
traditional sense on planet Depeche, co-founder and primary songwriter Martin Gore - who also handles keyboard and occasional lead
vocal duties - ensures that they play a far more integral role than many listeners might realise. Says Martin “I started playing guitar
when I was about 13. In the very rst incarnation of the band, I was the only one who actually played synth and I’d never had any kind
of keyboard training whatsoever, so I learned keyboards through guitar. We felt electronic music was the way forward at that point,
however, so we decided to become an all-electronic band. It wasn’t until a few years later that we realised we were really restricting
ourselves by not opening up to any other kind of instrumentation.” It is common knowledge that in more recent years Martin has been
an avid collector of guitars, gizmos, synths and eects via eBay. Despite his eBay prizes, Gore’s favourite guitar remains his beloved lime
green Gretsch Double Anniversary, dubbed “the Green Knight” aer luthier David Knight, who modied it in the early ’90s to be feedback
resistant. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan's comments: “This guitar is one of two identical replicas which were manufactured specically for the ‘World Violation’ and ‘Devo-
tional’ tours. Knight adapted them to work better in a live context due to the feedback issues associated with the original guitar. It was
used throughout those tours and also in the studio around that time, and still supports the rubber protective backing designed to avoid
the inevitable scratches that would have occurred as a result of the friction from Martin’s metallic jangling stage clothing! I don’t think
I’ve actually changed the strings since the tour even though I do occasionally play and record with it myself.” Estimate £3000 - £5000
35 OUTBOARD FX - Korg DVP-1: Digital Voice Processor (Vocoder) - Serial number: 000147. In excellent condition, fully functional. Includes
operation manual & power supply cable. Dated circa 1986. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
37 HARDWARE - Mackie Control - Universal Controller (for Logic Audio) by E Magic - Serial number: (21) HR 35081. Condition: as new,
fully functional. Includes operation instructions & power supply cable. Full implementation of Apple’s Logic Control. Digidesign Pro Tools
control via HUI. 100mm Penny + Giles Motorized Touchfaders. Multi-function V-Pots for fast control of panning and eects. Comprehensive
Automation controls. Full Meter Display with track names and parameters. 7-segment Timecode display. Soware-specic Lexan overlays.
Expandable via optional Mackie Control Extenders and C4 module. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details. Estimate £300 - £400
38 OUTBOARD FX - Manley: Stereo variable MU 10DV limiter/compressor - Model: Stereo variable MU. Serial number: MSLC 6810.
In excellent condition, fully functional. Includes settings template sheets & power supply cable.
The Manley stereo 10DV Limiter / Compressor is one of the very few compressors that has become a real standard in Mastering studios
and contributed to most hit records over the last decade. "Mu" is tube-speak for gain. It works by using the "remote cut-o" or re-biasing
of a vacuum tube to achieve compression. The precious vintage Fairchild 670 also uses this technique and is one of few all-tube com-
pressor to do so, that we know of. Even the side-chain has glowing rectier bottles. The unique 5670 dual triode is at the center of the
peak-reducing and compression action constantly being re-biased by the vacuum tube rectied side-chain control voltages which cause
this tube to smoothly change its gain. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan's comments: “All I can say is that it sounds wonderfully warm and inviting, and has been the outboard compressor that I turn to
most for a variety of applications, from drums to guitars to vocals. The results can be heard on all Recoil material since ‘Liquid’.”
Estimate £3000 - £4000
39 CONSOLE/MONITORING - Manley designer ref. 300 Series amplier - Serial number: MAN 3005001. In excellent condition, fully func-
tional. Includes power supply cable. Width 19"", Depth 10"", Height 8.5"". The Manley Reference 350 watt monoblocks were built at the
old VTL factory back before the Manley-VTL split that took place in 1993. They were, at the time, Manley's second-to-largest models in
the Designer's Reference Series.
Alan's comments: “I have used these valve Manley amps to drive my Dynaudio M2 monitors and have not been disappointed. The sound
actually improves and opens up as the amps warm up, giving you a real sense of valve presence. Inviting, warm and always bringing a
smile, the Manley’s are all that they should be. Don’t try liing them though - they weigh a ton! They were used a lot during the 5.1 mix-
ing of ‘SubHuman’ where I could really test the full frequency range and power of that album. Recently refurbished, with some calibra-
tion, valve testing & replacement by John Earls, they couldn’t be in a better state.” Estimate £2000 - £3000
40 CONSOLE/MONITORING - Manley designer ref. 300 Series amplier - See description for item 39. Estimate £2000 - £3000
41 SYNTHESISER - Minimoog Model D Synthesiser - Serial number: 10955. In good condition, a few scratches, minor damage to mod
wheel. Tested and working, although Oscillator 3 needs calibration. Includes operation manual, midi interface instructions, wooden/
foam-lined ight case & power supply cable. Designed by Robert Moog in 1970, the Minimoog Model D synthesiser is still regarded as
the Rolls Royce of analogue keyboard-based synthesisers. Specically designed for touring musicians, the Minimoog exported electronic
music experiments from university labs out to the masses. There were originally 13,000 Minimoogs produced between 1970 and 1981.
Aer a brief hiatus during the digital-synth craze in the 1980s, the Minimoog has enjoyed a resurgence of interest among musicians
since. Dates from circa 1975, retro t midi 'in' & midi 'thru' by Kenton, Surrey, UK. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan's comments: “This was my rst synthesiser bought around 1977, pre-Mode, when I was a member of Dafne & The Tenderspots. It
was a big deal for us at the time as it was quite expensive and we couldn’t really aord it until we secured our record deal. It added to my
Wurlitzer electric piano and gave me a whole wealth of new sound possibilities. It is still probably my all-time favourite synthesiser due
to the famous fat 3-oscillator sound, and of course it’s an absolute classic. I continued to use it for many years on early Mode recordings
such as 'Construction Time Again' and 'Some Great Reward' and even had a midi update added during the eighties. By the time a rack-
mount version called the Midi Moog came along, I stopped carting around the Minimoog, but I remain just as attached as I always was to
this original which still works and still sounds immense.” Estimate £2500 - £3000
44 SYNTHESISER - Oberheim OB-8 Synthesiser - Serial number: 032002. Condition: visually excellent, power supply tested, digital cir-
cuits good but analogue voice needs servicing. Includes power supply cable. Manufactured by Oberheim Electronics, Los Angeles,
USA. The Oberheim OB-8 is a vintage analog polysynth launched by Oberheim and discontinued in 1985. It features 8-voice polyph-
ony and is highly programmable, making it a popular classic. It features a 61-note piano keyboard, LFO modulation, lters, external
cassette storage, MIDI capability and 120 memory patches, and used the Z80 CPU. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan's comments: “To my disappointment, when I powered this up recently, I couldn’t get an actual sound although I’m told that it is just
the voices which need attention. I was surprised as it has been looked aer well and, cosmetically, it’s in superb physical shape. I used this
synth during my time with Real to Real and The Hitmen in the early 80s. It has a fat, warm sound and was my rst polyphonic synth. I
loved the fact that I could actually store patches for the rst time and it introduced me to the Oberheim sound which has a unique quality.
I have been a fan of Oberheim ever since.” Estimate £800 - £1200
45 CONSOLE/MONITORING - Quad 405-2 Current dumping amp - No serial number. In very good condition, fully functional. Includes opera-

Portable video cassette recorder (Betamax) - In good condition, working status tbc. Includes operation manual & 2 x power supply.
Released 1981. AC-F1UB serial number 0155000, AC-700 serial number 650883. Paired with the SL-F1 Betamax deck, the PCM-F1 was
the rst portable, battery-operated digital recording system. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan’s comments: “This was the very rst digital storage device we used to catalogue all our DM samples at the time, from about 1982/3
onwards. I remember a huge collection of individual drum sounds (and other instruments) which we used as our ‘go to’ library during
the making of ‘Some Great Reward’, ‘Black Celebration’ and beyond before more sophisticated storage mediums presented themselves.
The Sony machines used Betamax video cassettes. I haven’t used it for many years but my recollection is that it was reliable, and at the
time essential. It is a collector’s piece without doubt.” Estimate £150 - £200
49 MISC EQUIPMENT - SRC/AT Smpte to midi synchroniser - Serial number: 787 141. In excellent condition, fully functional. Includes opera-

50A ALAN WILDER STAGE CLOTHING COLLECTION (ITEMS 50A - 50Q) - 17 bespoke garments, individually designed for Depeche Mode's
'Devotional' tour. In excellent condition. Dates from 1993/4. Each garment designed by Paula Bradley and Karen Dusenbery in response
to Depeche Mode's specications. The collection comprises several items, mainly in black and dark green colours, using silk, mesh and
other unusual materials. Many items feature zips, buttons and poppers - each is dierent but all conform to a unied aesthetic concept.
Exact measurements are unconrmed, but at the time Alan's waist size was 32"/34" and his height is approximately 6 foot.
Alan's comments: “A unique collection in itself – all my clothing from the tour has been kept in pristine condition, cellophane wrapped
and stored in a dry environment. Each was designed specically for the tour, consisting of mainly two-piece outts which would allow
freedom of movement to accommodate drum performance. One or two pieces were unfortunately stolen during an infamous stop on the
tour in South Africa (’94) – these 15 pieces are what remains of the collection. I feel emotionally attached to this stu but really have no
use for it anymore and would prefer a real DM fanatic collector to own this small piece of history.”
All items within this collection come with a letter of authenticity signed by Alan.

51 PIANO - Steinway - Model O 6 'Boudoir' grand piano, circa 1915 - Serial number: 147872. Rosewood. Patent grand - New York &
Hamburg. Condition: Very good (small section of rosewood nish needs attention), French polished, beautiful Steinway tone, excellent
tuning. Overstrung. Restored 20 years ago. An investment. Includes Piano stool. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan's comments: “I acquired the Steinway in the late 80s when it was completely overhauled by one of the nest piano technicians in
the world Peter Salisbury (all strings replaced, hammer heads renewed, new dampers and leathers replaced where necessary, keys tops
cleaned or replaced, tuned, cleaned, regulated: www.globalpianoservices.com/technicalteam/petersalisbury.html ). Even though it hasn’t
received any signicant updates since, it has remained in my home and has been looked aer in an exemplary fashion. Over the last 20
years It hasn’t received the kind of playing hours one would expect from a serious classical musician but rather more occasional use. As
such, it is still in excellent condition, sounds fantastic and has always retained its tuning extremely well. The main consideration with
any Steinway is that they will always increase in value if looked aer. It is denitely an investment." Estimate £12000 - £16000
52 SYNTHESISER - Novation ‘Supernova’ polyphonic synthesiser - Serial number: 006652. In excellent condition, fully functional. Includes
operation manual & power supply cable. Manufactured in UK. An excellent polyphonic super synth based on the classic Bass Station. 16
voices of polyphony, with three VCO's using sound modeling to re-create classic analog sounds with digital clarity and reliability. Amazingly,
this synth has seven eects per voice adding up to 56 eects, all programmable and simultaneously available on all voices.
Alan's comments: “I used the Supernova mainly on Recoil’s ‘Liquid’ and ‘subHuman’ albums. It was responsible for the bass lines on ‘Jeze-
bel’ & ‘Black Box’ as well as sounds for ‘Breath Control’ amongst others (the Recoil patches are still programmed in the unit). I have found
it to be extremely consistent and reliable with a vast potential for sound storage, clever easy-to-use eects making it very quick and easy
to get a good usable sound. In fact, not sure I want to sell it now hmmm”

53 CONSOLE/MONITORING - Tascam MH-40B Multi headphones amp - Serial number: 300067. In excellent condition, fully functional. Includes

tional. Includes custom adapted casing & power cable. Reconditioned by Electric Eel. Dates from circa 1950. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk
for further details.
Alan's comments: “A V72 microphone preamplier is one of the key pieces in any studio collection and these sound exactly as they should,
adding unique warmth and presence. Used in the 60s on classic albums by The Beatles, Pink Floyd and many many others, these units are
highly sought today. This pair has been custom housed and refurbished by Kevin Van Greene. I have used them extensively at my studio
since 1996 mainly to record vocals for the ‘Unsound Methods’, ‘Liquid’ and ‘subHuman’ Recoil albums.” Estimate £1000 - £1500
55 CONSOLE/MONITORING - Telefunken V76/80 Valve mic amp - Serial number: NR3093. In very good condition, fully functional. Includes

56A ALAN WILDER DOUBLE TOUR WARDROBE FLIGHT CASE - Portable wardrobe used during the ‘Violator’ & ‘Devotional’ tours. Condition:
fully functional. Stencilled with Depeche Mode ‘Devotional’ logos (clean and dry inside). W: 116cm, H: 143cm, D: 60cm. See www.auction.
recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan's comments: “This wardrobe spent 14 months on the road with me during 1993 & 1994 (oh the stories it could tell!:). I can’t re-
member whether I used the same set for the ‘World Violation’ tour which preceded ‘Devotional’ – I’m pretty sure I did. These cases were
built to specication by the Bulldog ight case company and they are indestructible as well as being extremely practical. I have been
using them at home ever since they retired from the road.” Estimate £1500 - £2000
56B ALAN WILDER SINGLE TOUR WARDROBE FLIGHT CASE - Portable wardrobe used during the ‘Violator’ & ‘Devotional’ tours - Condition:

58 MISC EQUIPMENT - Waldorf MB-15 Midi Bay - Serial number: 9148/0463. In very good condition, fully functional. Includes power supply
cable. Manufactured by Waldorf Electronics, Germany. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details. Estimate £100 - £150
59 SYNTHESISER - EDP Wasp Synthesiser / Spider Sequencer - Serial number unknown. Condition: Some cosmetic damage to the speaker
grill, otherwise very good and fully functional. Includes operation manual, 1 power supply cable & 'Spider' connection cable. The 'Spider'
will require a second power supply (not included). See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan's comments: “I bought the Wasp & Spider privately in London in the early 80s. I’d used one earlier on a pre-Mode recording and
when it became available, I snapped it up. It has a unique sound all of its own and works in such a user-friendly way, that you can get
lost just ddling around creating literally endless possibilities. I remember the original sales blurb said that it was indestructible and
boasted that you could throw it from the roof of a large oce block and it would still work at the end of it. I never tried that you’ll be
pleased to hear. This Wasp was later used on various DM records, most notably for the Aggro mix of ‘Never Let Me Down Again’ to create
the famous bass sequencer part. I think we used the Wasp and Spider sequencer and then probably sampled the result, as it isn’t midi
controllable. We may have been able to sequence it using cv/gate. I can’t quite remember.” Estimate £600 - £1000
60 PIANO - Wurlitzer 200A Electric piano circa 1975 - Condition: needs some attention but it is functional. Volume/tremolo knobs missing (but
pots work). No legs or pedal. Includes wooden/foam-lined ight case & power supply cable. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details.
Alan's comments: “I make no bones about it - my Wurltizer has seen better days. It is not the most cosmetically appealing shall we say
- missing its knobs, with the name plate having been painted over and the original legs and pedal getting lost somewhere on the road.
Finding the missing bits may not be too much of a struggle though. However, the big plus point is that is it fully working and sounds
just as good as it ever did. I had a play on it recently and really enjoyed the experience. I remembered what it was about the piano that
attracted me to it in the rst place. When I was a lowly tape op working at DJM records in 1977, Roger Scott Craig (the keyboard from
one of the acts recording there - Liverpool Express ) said to me “don’t get a Fender Rhodes - everyone has those. Go for the Wurlitzer
instead, it’s much cooler and has a unique sound.” He was right. I used the piano for many years in several bands and even had a ight
case built. Stupidly, I painted over the name plate to make it all black although I guess it might be possible to remove the paint and
re-expose the plate. So there you have it, not in perfect condition but plenty of history and all the character.” Estimate £1000 - £1500
61 MISC EQUIPMENT - Yamaha MJC8 Midi patch bay - Serial number: OL01143. In excellent condition, fully functional. Includes operation

63 OUTBOARD FX - Yamaha SPX 90 Digital sound processor - Serial number: 15076. Condition: Visually excellent but does not function (in

programs of gtr fx settings for entire ‘Songs Of Faith & Devotion’ Depeche Mode album & operations manual. See www.auction.recoil.co.uk
for further details.
Alan's comments: “This superb little unit has a unique sound of it’s own and has been a ‘go-to’ eect for many years, both with Depeche
Mode and Recoil. This particular box still has stored many of the guitar eects used on ‘SOFAD’ including the ‘I Feel You’ gtr settings
amongst many others. It is also very versatile and adaptable - oen we would use it on a voice for example to create a dirty, radio-
frequency eect, or perhaps on drum loops like on ‘Mercy In You’.”
Estimate £150 - £200
65A ‘ZILDJIAN’ DRUMMING GLOVES & ‘AQUARIAN’ GRAPHITE DRUMSTICKS (2B) (SIGNED) - 1 x pair ‘Zildjian’ drumming gloves.
Condition: Used. Made by ‘Zildjian’, signed by Alan. 1 x pair ‘Aquarian’ graphite drumsticks (2B). Condition: New, unused.
All items signed. NB - items 65A - 65H are the same.
Alan’s comments: “Once I started rehearsing the drums for Depeche Mode’s ‘Devotional’ tour, I knew that if I wanted to avoid painful blis-
ters for the subsequent 14 months, I’d need to nd a way to protect my hands. I investigated several manufacturers and found that these
purpose-designed gloves were the best choice, along with tape for the ngers, all helping me to come through pretty much unscathed.
The drumming sticks were specially sourced when it became clear that I wouldn’t be able to complete a live set without breaking several
normal wooden ones, such was my ‘enthusiasm’. Daryl Bamonte found a company that manufactured these red/black graphite versions
which are virtually unbreakable (although I did manage to trash a few along the way).”

Alan's comments: “The kit was purchased specically when it was decided to include live drums as part of the recording of DM’s ‘SOFAD’
and the subsequent decision to take that performance concept into the live arena. The advice I received at the time was that this
Yamaha kit would be the most reliable, hard wearing, best sounding drum set for the job. And it certainly proved to be so. To enhance
the experience and bring variety, I added two dierent and much sought aer Noble & Cooley snare drums. I have used the drums many
times since the tour during recording sessions for all the Recoil albums since ‘Unsound Methods’. With some new skins and a nice polish,
it will be ready to go, sounding as good as it has ever done.”

Estimate £4000 - £6000

69A ALAN WILDER / DEPECHE MODE SOUND SAMPLE ZIP DISC WITH 30 SOUND BANKS (No 1) - amazing collection of 30 sound banks (covering 30
classic tracks) containing exact sounds which were programmed and used by Alan during DM’s ‘Devotional’ and ‘Music For The Masses’ tours.
Alan’s comments: “I spent many hours (days!) programming each member’s keyboards for the tours, painstakingly try-
ing to recreate as accurately as possible the sounds we formulated and used on the records. The Emax was a perfect tool
for the live re-creations. This collection covers most of my own sounds for the two tours, although I did play live drums on some
songs. I tried all these out recently and discovered how much fun it is to work out the various parts we all used to play.”
These are signed and numbered by Alan and are designed for the Emax sampler (The Zip discs will work in any suitable Zip drive and con-
nect to the Emax via a SCSI cable). See www.auction.recoil.co.uk for further details. Estimate £200 - £400
