Holden Shawlette Mindy Wilkes When I was a little girl, our family always vacationed in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I always loved the way the waves “danced” as they broke onto the shore. While on vacation in Holden Beach, North Carolina, I fell in love with the little waves all over again. Inspired by the waves, the Holden Shawlette is a simple but elegant little shawl. Constructed from the middle of the neck down, this triangular shawlette features an upper stockinette portion with a garter stitch border. The stockinette portion flows into a wavy lace edge and is finished with a picot bind off. This pattern is perfect for a first lace or shawl project. The lace pattern is easy to memorize. Combined with the stockinette body, this is a perfect project to take on your vacations. Copyright © 2010 Mindy Wilkes. For questions or technical support, contact mindyswilkes@gmail.com Materials Suggested Yarn(s): Malabrigo Sock (shown in color Aguas) Finished Size: 55 inches x 25.5 inches. Size is dependent upon gauge and how the shawl is blocked. Yarn Requirements: 430-450 yards, 3.5-4.0 oz fingering weight yarn Needles: US Size 6 (4 mm) 24 in or larger circular needles or size to make gauge Notions: darning needle Gauge: 18 stitches and 30 rows/4 inches in stockinette stitch after blocking. While gauge is not important as the fit is not crucial, changes in gauge will result in size differences and the amount of yarn needed to complete the project. Copyright © 2010 Mindy Wilkes. For questions or technical support, contact mindyswilkes@gmail.com Pattern Notes • The first and last three stitches of each row are always knit to form the garter stitch border. • The written instructions do contain the first and last three stitches of each row and the center stitch of each row. The center stitch is indicated in red. • In the stockinette portion, the stitch count increases by four stitches after each right side row. • The stitch count does not remain constant for the lace pattern. Stitch counts should only be done after rows 6-8 and rows 14-16 of the lace pattern. Stitch counts have been provided for these rows. • When knitting the lace pattern, remember to keep the center stitch in stockinette. Notes About The Chart Follow the chart as written, reading the odd-numbered rows from right to left and the even-numbered rows from left to right. The chart represents half of the triangle. You will knit the first three stitches of each row, knit the chart, knit the center stitch, knit the chart again, and knit the last three stitches of the row. The chart does not contain the first and last three stitches of the row or the center stitch of the row. When beginning the chart you will knit the repeat section three times and will increase by one repeat for each time you knit the chart. Abbreviations k: knit p: purl skp: slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over k2tog: knit 2 together yo: yarn over Instructions Using a long-tail cast on, loosely cast on 3 stitches. Knit 6 rows. Do not turn the work after the last row. Turn the work 90 degrees clockwise. Pick up and knit 3 stitches in the garter ridges on the edge of the piece (6 sts). Turn the work 90 degrees clockwise.
